This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot). 

And when thoughts turn to food, there are some delightful pubs just moments away. And a charming tearoom for your fix of Yorkshire Fat Rascals is dangerously close - it's just below your door.

In the heart of Pickering, this stone charmer is just a six-minute walk from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Inside, wooden beams and ornamental fireplaces reflect the home's 200-year-old history, while two cosy lounges – including one with a log burner – provide plenty of space to sprawl out. We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.

In the living room, you'll find comfy furnishings arranged around a log burning stove, as well as some lovably quirky touches, like the wooden stag head mounted on the wall and the repurposed chest used as a table. Upstairs, the comfy bedrooms are matched by an equally pretty bathroom, complete with a contemporary freestanding bathtub ideal for lazy Sunday morning soaks.

Outside, there's a small courtyard, as well as designated bike storage with wall-mounted racks. Thankfully, you're not exactly short of places to pedal to either — Scarborough can be reached in just over an hour and a half's cycling. Closer to home, Pickering Castle is five minutes' walk away and a station for the restored heritage railway line that travels sixteen miles through North Yorkshire is even nearer.

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

Perched above the tiny village of Rosedale Abbey, this former vicarage has beautiful views of the rolling Yorkshire countryside. There’s a local shop, tea room, pub and café within walking distance, but it’s all about rambles into the countryside here. Despite the historic building, the interior is stylish and modern with three separate lounges to spread out across – a sunny orangery extension, and two formal living rooms with working fireplaces. Bedrooms are cosy spots for sound sleep, but it’s the barbecue deck outside that takes the cake with a panoramic view of the valley and hills.

After a lunch of fresh seafood, head to the Whitby Abbey, a fourteen-minute walk from Whitby Beach, to visit the renowned ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula.

Back home, take in the tranquillity of the secluded escape by sitting out on the deck with a cup of coffee. Watch the breeze play through the line of trees surrounding you as you catch up on your favourite podcast. We recommend, at least once, sitting out here to watch the sun rise or set, maybe even both. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.

When you're not trying the town's excellent bars and restaurants, make the most of the modern kitchen, perhaps taking your meal down to the garden for an alfresco dinner. The comfortable outdoor seating is also perfect for relaxing in the evening, watching the sun go down with a drink or two. Or simply take in the views over the beach, North Sea and Huntcliff from the sunroom – we think the vistas here are wonderful.

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Later on, stroll along the 208-metre-long pier with an ice cream – we do love to be beside the sea.

Rejuvenate with panoramic coastal views and sea air at this contemporary home perched along the mighty beach cliffs of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. With the Victorian spa town's golden sands and bustling town centre all just a five-minute jaunt away, it's hard to imagine a better location. 

Spend days sandcastle making, kite flying, and surfing, if you time the tide right. And when tummies start to rumble, hop on the cliff lift (the oldest of its kind in the UK, no less) just eight minutes from your door. You'll be down on the promenade backed by its colourful beach huts in no time for fish and chips and lashings of ice creams. 

Back at home, this place is a masterstroke in the art of modern living, with zesty pops of colour creating a welcoming retreat. But it's those views of the distant horizon taking all the glory here. In winter months, sink into the sumptuous, velvet sofas positioned just so to take in the seascapes with a cuppa. And when the sun shines, pad out onto the sea-facing terrace with a glass of something chilled – the outdoor lighting will help keep the night flowing.
