Within its winding cobbled streets, you'll find bustling pubs, shops, art galleries, and of course, all the fish and chips you could muster. Spend the day at the sheltered sandy beach shell combing and rock pooling, take to the waters from the village for a boat jaunt to Whitby, or try out a fishing tour. Just be sure to make it home with plenty of time to switch on the hot tub and relax in the bubbles under the stars – there's no better way to finish a day. Inside the home, the barn's original exposed gable ceilings have been expertly restored to create an open, lofty feel to each pristine room. We're particularly fond of the barn doors, painted a dashing shade of red and reimagined into picture windows, opening out to reveal glimpses of green landscapes from nearly every room.

In fact, Yorkshire's rocky coastline is practically on your doorstep – and it's all yours to admire from the window in the lounge.

Inspired by the surrounding scenery, each room here has oodles of seaside curios to admire – that is, if you can tear your gaze away from the view. The living area couldn't be cosier, especially with the fire roaring, your favourite show on the telly and a steaming mug of tea at the ready. On sunny days, the small patio is ideal for an alfresco tipple or two, but even better is the sumptuous roll-top bathtub in the main bedroom – what's more relaxing than ending the day with a soak in the bubbles and a glass of wine in hand? 

When you're ready to venture out, hop in the car and make your way to Yorkshire's myriad of seaside towns. Head in one direction towards historic Whitby (about a twenty-minute drive), veer in the other towards the sandy beaches in Saltburn (roughly half an hour by car) or explore on foot with a coastal trek along the Cleveland Way National Trail.

Close enough to drive to Robin Hoods Bay, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and the North Yorkshire National Park and Moors, it's still far enough away from any sort of bustle that it feels secluded. So grab a coffee pre-dawn and sit out on the terrace as the sun breaks over the horizon. 

Even with the doors open, it's still peaceful enough here to kick back with a good romance novel and glass of wine. Although, you might want to carpe diem and wander out to the beach whenever you spot a ray of sunshine, because Runswick Bay has been recognised by The Times as one of Britain's top fifty beaches. Paddle board, surf, and splash to your heart’s content before finding a spot that serves fresh seafood. Newly renovated, the cottage pays homage to its heritage by blending original fixtures with natural materials to stunning effect. Here, you're welcome to curl up by the wood-burning stove, share an intimate meal around the rustic dining table and stretch out in the sunshine on the decking in the enclosed backyard. Take a ten-minute morning stroll along the rugged clifftops to Port Mulgrave Harbour to admire the fishermen's huts – made from reclaimed flotsam and found materials – or seek out sea creatures in the coast's abundant rock pools. Restaurant Number 20, five minutes around the corner, comes with a Michelin Guide recommendation, and there are also a handful of popular pubs well within walking distance. Historic Whitby is a twenty-minute drive south, while the forests and dales of the North York Moors National Park are right on your doorstep. With well-behaved canine companions welcome, we see no reason not to move in permanently.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.

From the outside, this period home is as pretty as a picture, and inside, things only get better. Every corner of the cottage feels restful and considered. Sophisticated warm neutrals keep everything oh-so-classy, while houseplants and botanical print textiles bring pops of colour and a flash of modernity. With a wood-burning stove to hunker down beside and storybook armchairs and window seats for afternoon lolls with the papers, it’s a delightful place to be, whatever the weather brings.

But on fine days, it’s outside chasing the sun between the front and rear garden terraces where you’ll want to be. Get together at the bistro table with morning coffees to watch village life go by, then head into the lawned garden later for evening drinks and barbecues.

When it’s time to mingle with the locals, there’s a restaurant, olde-worlde pub (0.1 miles away), butchers, and general store delivering all the village vibes you’re chasing. Be sure to swing by the Old School for lashings of tea and cake – it’s quite the hub of the village. Then hop on the coastal bus (it stops just beyond your garden gate) bound for the impossibly beautiful fishing village and beach of Staithes (one and a half miles away) – or in the opposite direction, charming Whitby (nine miles).

Set within acres and acres of private estate, you’ll find this country bolthole in a row of terracotta-roofed cottages dappled with ivy. Towering trees and manicured gardens surround the spot for a bit of away-from-it-all feeling. Yet, a fifteen-minute walk sees you at Sandsend beach where a coastal stroll has you in the centre of Whitby in forty minutes (subject to tides). Here you’ll find myriad seafood restaurants, traditional fish and chip shops and beachside (and literary) attractions. If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream.

The Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea makes for an excellent seaside escape. It’s a real coastal retreat, surrounded by charming seaside towns and villages – you can use Saltburn as your base for exploring the area. 

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Relax with a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub or rinse off under the rainfall shower. The living area is warm and incredibly comfortable. In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water. Speaking of the sea, it's just a five-minute walk down to the beach or into town, where you can snack on fish and chips and grab a pint at one of the local pubs.
