The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. This home is a lesson in not being misled by first impressions. Yes, it's a stone cottage sitting in the middle of a farm, but step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's as bright and contemporary as any.

Not only is the home decorated beautifully, but it's also in the heart of the town, just a short walk away from the sandy beach. 

The living room has the feel of a grand hall – statue busts, twinkling chandeliers, prestigious artwork, and a rich mahogany dining table exude opulence. You'll love spending evenings here, the gas-burning stove warming you up from the inside out, while you sip on good wine and enjoy the lighthearted conversation.

Take morning walks around the Victorian boating lake with a coffee in hand, before enjoying a lunch of fish and chips along the sandy beach. A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

Pack up your buckets and spades for an easy, breezy family holiday by the sea with your four-legged friends in tow. This newly built home, set in a quiet spot of the postcard-pretty seaside village of Beadnell and just a short flip-flop from the beach, delivers all the goods.

Drop your bags off and head to Beadnell's golden sands (a 0.5-mile walk) for water sports action and sandcastle-making marathons. Then dive into one of the local pubs (one mile away) for a swift pint, hearty grub, and a warm welcome.

Fancy breaking things up with an afternoon at a swimming pool and spa? Then make use of the host's membership to The Ocean Club in nearby Seahouses. You can book in for a fitness class, treatments and a splash about the children's pool. And if the kids have any energy left, closer to home, you'll find a playground and grassed area for a runabout.

When it's finally time for a rest up, you'll love how fresh and inviting this home feels. Catch the last of the sun with barbecues in the garden. Or hunker down inside around the farmhouse-style dining table for family feasts before cosy film nights beside the fire. 

Upstairs, you find three light-filled bedrooms, united with nautical vibes to remind us the sea is never far away. And kids will love the novelty of the bunkbeds, so there's no need for top and tail squabbles here.

Large windows allow natural daylight to permeate the house during the day, so you can wake up to scenic views right from the bedrooms, and open the window to let in the smell of the sea. Sit out on the patio in the garden and enjoy drinks and good company as the sun sets or curl up on the sofa in the living room and get lost in a good book.

You'll find plenty to do in Whitley Bay, including the two miles of golden sandy beaches, where you'll enjoy some incredible vistas from the St Mary's Island lighthouse. If you're hoping to find some great places to eat out during your trip, you’re in luck – Spanish City plays host to a Renaissance-style hall complete with a fish and chip restaurant, a bar and a traditional tearoom. What’s more, this abode is in close proximity to public transport, so you'll be able to hop on a bus to the city centre for some retail therapy.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Sitting within a holiday park near the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland, this pet-friendly eco-lodge invites ample relaxation amid its natural setting. A-frame floor-to-ceiling windows allow for plenty of natural light throughout the day and the living room’s wood-burning stove is perfect for curling up next to on cooler evenings. A decked area outside beckons alfresco meals when the weather is balmy. Alternatively, you can head to the quarry’s enclosed picnic area for wonderful views of the surroundings. When you decide to holiday in the UK, you typically have to decide between the coast and the countryside. Not here – this lovely Northumbrian cottage is surrounded by rolling countryside, with a beach just 10 miles away. You can start each day with a paddle and a bracing march along the shore, and pass afternoons exploring the countryside. History-buffs will enjoy discovering the ruin of the 13th-century Edlingham Castle nearby – we love that you can set off on gorgeous walks right from the doorstep here. Historic Alnwick and its spectacular castle are only 6 miles away, too. 

When you’re not muddying your boots or tucking into fish and chips, you’ll love spending time in the garden. It’s enclosed so four-legged friends and little ones alike can play safely while you sip mugs of tea and take in the glorious views. If the weather is a touch more British and you need to shelter inside, you might curl up around the log burner. Rest your weary feet and spend evenings catching up around the fire – what a perfect way to end the day.

Hidden away on a lovely farm estate, this stunning stone cottage offers all the charm of a country retreat combined with the convenience of all the mod cons. On cool nights, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play board games by firelight or stream your favourite films as you sink into the sofa. The patio area of the private walled garden is the perfect place to sip coffee out of the wind in the morning and glasses of wine in the afternoon when the sun emerges from behind the building and warms the stones. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Alternatively, you could drive thirty minutes to Whiteadder Watersports Centre for sailing, kayaking and SUP sessions, or visit the timeless city of Edinburgh, a forty-mile drive away.

When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. This historic village leads onto Beadnell Bay, where visitors can go scuba diving, surfing and sailing – although you might want to wait until the warmer months. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.

Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.
