Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. Seven minutes by car from Durham city centre, this former rectory plays host to a most luxurious home that feels a world away from urban life. Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood.
