Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. But rustic tradition isn’t far away, with an Aga range cooker and log-burner taking you back to days of old. Superbly stylish throughout, pour another glass and say a toast to dear old Grace – perhaps from the comfort of your marble-clad tub.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

And in the aptly named Seahouses, this quaint, coastal settlement is home to this gorgeous abode. Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.

Stop for a bite to eat in the village’s fine selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants or head back to your abode and treat your loved ones to a hearty home-cooked supper.

We love the soft blue and sandy tones, exuding comfort while drawing inspiration from the coastal location. Lying just around the corner from Seahouses Harbour, the stone facade of this home looks like it's been a fixture here for years, but it's a fairly recent addition. This becomes abundantly clear as you glance around the contemporarily styled interior for the first time.

Spread across a single floor, the colour palette of muted greys and whites is bright and inviting, while there's a wealth of surface space in the sleek kitchen for when you want to whip up seafood banquets. The designers haven't completely done away with rustic cosiness, though – what could be a cuter way of ending a productive day than gathering around the crackling flames by the living room's stove?

As already mentioned, the town's harbour is just a three-minute walk away and it's possible to head out on nautical expeditions, including diving and trips to the bird-spotting hotspot, Farne Islands. If you prefer to stay on land, there are walking routes and scenic points aplenty in the surrounding Northumberland Coast AONB, too.

While restaurants, pubs, and Seahouses' picturesque harbour are a five-minute walk away, what we love most is that two miles of sandy beach sits just across the road. Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose. A ten-minute drive away is Bamburgh Castle, making this an ideal spot to explore the Northumberland Coast. 

The Shore & The Ship

With an idyllic setting with a balcony overlooking the sea – this holiday cottage is a great find – we love the stunning sea vistas. The kitchen/dining room has a door to a west-facing balcony too, great for sunsets. It is just a minute's walk from Seahouses' commercial hub with all of its shops, restaurants and bars. Or from the harbour, you can get a boat to the beautiful Farne Islands or make use of the Ocean Leisure Club (membership is included while staying at this home, but a small entrance fee applies).

This modern first-floor apartment grants you stunning views of the sea without stepping a single foot out the door. Whether you're enjoying your morning cup of tea on the cushy sofa or watching the dramatic sunsets over the Farne Islands on the private balcony, here, the striking Northumberland coastline is your backdrop and the rolling waves are your soundtrack.
