As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

The Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea makes for an excellent seaside escape. It’s a real coastal retreat, surrounded by charming seaside towns and villages – you can use Saltburn as your base for exploring the area. 

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. We love every irresistible inch, from the light-filled skylights and gorgeous sea views down to the glossy parquet floor. The sumptuous master bedroom is so stylish, it's hard to believe it's all upcycled from cladding and roof joists, and the master bathroom is even better. Relax with a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub or rinse off under the rainfall shower. The living area is warm and incredibly comfortable. In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water. Speaking of the sea, it's just a five-minute walk down to the beach or into town, where you can snack on fish and chips and grab a pint at one of the local pubs. Shopaholics can browse Saltburn-by-the-Sea's independent boutiques, keen hikers can walk along the Cleveland Way or for a more leisurely pace, just stroll along the Victorian pier, relishing in the salty sea air.

When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite hearty dishes in the kitchen – we recommend a classic Sunday roast. And, if the weather is warm, you can enjoy a tipple outside on the terrace, as you breathe in the fresh air and make some plans for your stay. 

History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city. 

The Periwinkle

This charming building dates back to 1894, when it was built as part of Hexham Abbey. It was still being used as a place of worship until 2003, and then stood empty until its current owners gave it a new lease of life as a luxury holiday home. You'll find plenty of echoes of the past here, from the original brickwork on the exterior, to the wooden beams and impressive vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom. However, this home is firmly part of the present, and its recent restoration means that the interiors are classic yet contemporary. Curl up beside the wood-burning stove for a toasty night in, or run yourself a decadent bubble bath – the free-standing tub is a real gem. There's also an outdoor hot tub with fantastic views over the countryside, where you can soak to your heart's content. Walkers will be glad that both Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines are within a short drive of your front door. The market town of Hexham is only a five-minute car ride away, where you'll find quaint pubs, a weekly farmers' market and the historic abbey, one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England. And, when you return home, don't forget to do some stargazing – your hosts have even provided a telescope.  

Holy Water

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

Located in the quaint Victorian Spa town of Saltburn, this home is a pretty wonderful example of the phrase ‘dynamite comes in small packages’. Sure, it’s a studio, but far roomier than you might expect, and actually rather perfect for a romantic getaway. Draw the curtains to let the light stream in and spend a lazy morning in bed with coffee and a crossword puzzle before finally dragging yourselves out of bed and into the kitchen for breakfast. Head out from there on a romantic walk through town and toward the promenade. 

There are also plenty of hiking options or walks through the maze of The Valley Gardens. If you’re not walking – arm in arm is best – then you can always hop in the car for a road trip with an epic playlist. After a meal at a romantic restaurant, snuggle on the coach with the fire crackling in the wood-burning stove, and just appreciate the space, the moment, and each other.
