A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

It’s on a working farm, where the sheep have been tended to by the same family for generations and you can ramble across hilltops and country lanes straight from your doorstep. Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. The living room is a cosy spot in twilight pink, with an ornamental fireplace. Spacious, pastel bedrooms in the eaves are the perfect end to a day in the countryside.

Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood.

A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize.
