A-frame floor-to-ceiling windows allow for plenty of natural light throughout the day and the living room’s wood-burning stove is perfect for curling up next to on cooler evenings. A decked area outside beckons alfresco meals when the weather is balmy. Alternatively, you can head to the quarry’s enclosed picnic area for wonderful views of the surroundings. With Bamburgh Castle, the coast and golf courses easily reachable by car, there’s something here for everyone. 


The Golden Shores

Perched upon the Whitley coast lies this comfortable modern home. Large windows allow natural daylight to permeate the house during the day, so you can wake up to scenic views right from the bedrooms, and open the window to let in the smell of the sea. You'll find plenty to do in Whitley Bay, including the two miles of golden sandy beaches, where you'll enjoy some incredible vistas from the St Mary's Island lighthouse. If you're hoping to find some great places to eat out during your trip, you’re in luck – Spanish City plays host to a Renaissance-style hall complete with a fish and chip restaurant, a bar and a traditional tearoom. What’s more, this abode is in close proximity to public transport, so you'll be able to hop on a bus to the city centre for some retail therapy.

Inside, you’ll find a stylish kitchen and living area, while outside, there’s a private garden, where you can spend time relaxing in the sun or dining al fresco. When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. This historic village leads onto Beadnell Bay, where visitors can go scuba diving, surfing and sailing – although you might want to wait until the warmer months. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.

Wild Grey

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Amply sized windows show off the views of rolling fields, while the lofty ceilings and open-plan living area create more than enough space for a small group to get comfortable. Sleek and sophisticated, the kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up hearty breakfasts and Sunday roasts, best enjoyed around the table alongside a bottle of wine and good conversation. Upstairs, the main suite has oodles of room to relax. We love the balcony – the perfect spot to enjoy your coffee in the fresh air – as well as the freestanding bathtub, which beckons for relaxing soaks after a long walk through the country. And even better, guests will have access to the two hot tubs on-site – ideal for bubbling away under the starry night skies.

Make sure to pack your walking shoes as this section of Northumberland is rife for rambling. A ten-minute drive away lies Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, while waterfront pubs along the River Tyne are about a twenty-minute drive. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.
