And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.

Beadnell Bay's long stretch of sand is perfect for bucket-and-spade holidays, while the locale also boasts many coastal walks with stunning views of cliff-top ruins, including Dunstanburgh Castle.

Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

When it's time for a dose of sea air, nip to the end of the road, and you can watch the boats bob into shore – made even more magical at sunset. Then take a mosey into the centre for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

A former farmer's cottage just a short drive from Bamburgh and Seahouses, this place has had quite a facelift in recent years and now offers a comfortable and smart home with plenty of luxury touches. A huge vaulted ceiling hangs over the sociable, open-plan living space, where you'll find a high-end kitchen, comfy seating area and dining table – along with big windows and a rather special view. In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

The Beach Flower

This home is a lesson in not being misled by first impressions. Yes, it's a stone cottage sitting in the middle of a farm, but step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's as bright and contemporary as any.

Much of this is down to the bountiful amounts of natural light that streams through the glass doors and roof lantern, although the stark white walls and reflective wooden floors help, too. As well as a long kitchen finished in a muted grey, there's a stylish collection of furnishings dotted about the space, too.

However, it's not just easy on the eye. The wood-burning stove is lovely to have crackling away in the background during the chillier months, but there's a southeast-facing garden complete with a lounge and large lawn should the weather gods be smiling down on you during your visit.

If that's the case, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor adventures in the nearby Northumberland Coast Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, from Dunstanburgh Castle fifteen minutes' drive away to the sands of Embleton Bay only ten minutes away.

Drop your bags off and head to Beadnell's golden sands (a 0.5-mile walk) for water sports action and sandcastle-making marathons. Then dive into one of the local pubs (one mile away) for a swift pint, hearty grub, and a warm welcome.

Fancy breaking things up with an afternoon at a swimming pool and spa? Then make use of the host's membership to The Ocean Club in nearby Seahouses. You can book in for a fitness class, treatments and a splash about the children's pool. And if the kids have any energy left, closer to home, you'll find a playground and grassed area for a runabout.

When it's finally time for a rest up, you'll love how fresh and inviting this home feels. Catch the last of the sun with barbecues in the garden. Or hunker down inside around the farmhouse-style dining table for family feasts before cosy film nights beside the fire.

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood.

Upstairs, each bedroom has stunning views across fields towards the Cheviot Hills or over the dunes towards the sea.

The large kitchen with a lovably retro serving hatch has a wealth of surface space for whipping up family-sized feasts, which can be enjoyed around the dining table.

Alternatively, if the forecast makes for pleasant reading during your visit, it would be a crying shame not to make the most of the table that sits in the middle of the back garden's terrace – there's a barbecue present if you really want to embrace the alfresco way of life.

We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. Alternatively, make a beeline for Bamburgh – think sand dunes, snug eateries and legendary coastal fortress – or the historic market town of Alnwick, with its magnificent castle and gardens. On the way home be sure to stop off for beer battered haddock and hand-cut chips at The Pack Horse Inn, a popular pub offering locally sourced food and drinks. At the day’s end gather together on the sofas in the living room. Grab a bottle of wine and light the wood burning stove before putting your feet up, play at cards or settling in for movie night.  You won’t regret it.

When we say you’re footsteps from the beach here, we mean it. A stone staircase leads directly from this home to the soft sand of Smuggler’s Bay, so you’ve got beach days at your fingertips. Plus, you’re in the charming village of Beadnell, where there’s a convenience store, cosy pub and a bistro for a more formal dinner.

The home itself is like the beach houses of New England, with an atrium-style glass front showing off that direct sea view. The outdoors is set up to enjoy the sound of the waves with a hammock, outdoor dining and seating on the balcony too. There are two living areas to choose from inside – the light-filled lounge on the first floor leading to the balcony, or the leather seats in the open-plan living area downstairs. The dining area opens out onto the terrace and the kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. We love the decor inside, rich dark wood and blue to reflect your seaside locale.

Located in the picturesque village of Rock, this modern Northumbrian stone house is perfect for family get-togethers. With a peaceful rural location and within easy driving distance of Alnwick market town, Embleton Bay and the famous Harry Potter castle, it's the ideal place to unwind and explore. This home is set amongst others on a private conservational estate, so you may bump into neighbouring guests during your stay, though you’ll have a private drive and parking here. The house is fairly minimal but the wood-burning stove is perfect for family nights in, the snug room offers a retreat for teens of the group, and the large garden provides a wendy house and swings for the kids.

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. But rustic tradition isn’t far away, with an Aga range cooker and log-burner taking you back to days of old. Superbly stylish throughout, pour another glass and say a toast to dear old Grace – perhaps from the comfort of your marble-clad tub.

This stone-built cottage is just over 300 metres from the seafront in the town of Seahouses. There are bars under 200 metres away too, or you can play some golf or go horse riding nearby. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.
