Designed using recycled materials and furnishings, this beach cottage's interiors nod to the home's original heritage with a modern twist. We particualrly love the independently commissioned photography that graces the walls and offers conversational talking points similar to those of an art gallery.  

Bright and airy, the art of relaxation comes easy here. And with the beach accessible via a 20-metre path north of the cottage, you can be on the beach or soaking up views of its sandy shores from the private garden in no time. 

If you plan to embark on golfing days, cycling trips and kayaking excursions when staying here, the host will be happy to arrange storage space in advance, so you do not need to worry about where you'll put your equipment.

Make sure to pack your walking shoes as this section of Northumberland is rife for rambling. A ten-minute drive away lies Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, while waterfront pubs along the River Tyne are about a twenty-minute drive. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Seven minutes by car from Durham city centre, this former rectory plays host to a most luxurious home that feels a world away from urban life. In the rolling fields of County Durham lies a village called Witton Gilbert. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.   

Lakeland Rest

Go north to the village of Bellingham, an hour away from Newcastle, and that’s where you’ll find this beautiful, cosy cottage. With a charming colour palette of blue, pink and brown, and natural elements of wood and brick, the aesthetic here is enough to make you want to stay forever. Now imagine an alfresco breakfast at the picnic table outside, followed by a strong coffee whilst you snuggle into the corner sofa with a good book. Imagine games of poker around the dining table – loser cooks dinner  – or a glass of prosecco and a bubble bath. 
 
When you’re not relaxing indoors, do it outdoors by unwinding with a game of golf at the Bellingham Club, or a hike on the Hareshaw Iron Works Trail. There’s a shop nearby where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a number of cafes.

Fox & Wreath

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

This welcome, family home is a wonderful base for your coastal getaway. Nestled on a leafy street in the idyllic village of Newton-by-the-Sea, you’ll love exploring this gorgeous slice of the Northumberland Coast as much as enjoying this sociable base.

Newton-by-the-Sea is dotted with traditional cream-washed cottages, and this charming abode is no different. Inside, the classic yet contemporary interior makes a lovely home-from-home, with polished hardwood floors, bright walls, a gas-burning fireplace, and cosy furnishings. We love the soft blue and sandy tones, exuding comfort while drawing inspiration from the coastal location. Or, you can take your coffee out to the patioed garden and breathe in the fresh seaside air.  

Whether you plan on spending your days windsurfing, sailing, relaxing on the beach, bird watching, or exploring the quaint village, there’s a lot to love about Newton-by-the-Sea. Tuck into an obligatory lunch of fish and chips on the beach and explore the village’s historical churches. Return home to catch the last of the afternoon sun in your garden with a good glass of wine, before getting the barbecue going for a grilled feast.
