Right in the heart of the village of Otterburn, this cosy and rather stylish home is perfect if you're keen to explore this beautiful area. On the banks of the River Rede, it's known for its local pubs and restaurants – as well as its proximity to the Northumberland National Park. Here the hiking is some of the best in the country and you're likely to spot red squirrels and deer. 

Inside, it's been put together with a great deal of design flair. The comfortable living room feels like home the minute you step inside, with navy blue walls, an imposing stone fireplace and warm wood floors. There's a squashy, L-shaped sofa for evenings in front of the log burner and some quirky and cool decor, while the kitchen is modern and practical.

But it's the bedrooms that steal the show here, with supremely comfortable beds and contemporary colour schemes. And we just love the pretty bathroom and its sloping ceiling and statement tiles.

You'll have outside space too, thanks to a private garden with a deck, but if you fancy an evening meal at the village instead, it's just a stroll away.

 

Chase's Ballad

A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Listen To The Wind

Nestled along Northumbria's picturesque coastline like a lighthouse calling to the ocean, this home will leave you feeling very well connected to the sea. Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

The Sea is My Friend

Go north to the village of Bellingham, an hour away from Newcastle, and that’s where you’ll find this beautiful, cosy cottage. With a charming colour palette of blue, pink and brown, and natural elements of wood and brick, the aesthetic here is enough to make you want to stay forever. Now imagine an alfresco breakfast at the picnic table outside, followed by a strong coffee whilst you snuggle into the corner sofa with a good book. Imagine games of poker around the dining table – loser cooks dinner  – or a glass of prosecco and a bubble bath. 
 
When you’re not relaxing indoors, do it outdoors by unwinding with a game of golf at the Bellingham Club, or a hike on the Hareshaw Iron Works Trail. There’s a shop nearby where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a number of cafes.

This single-level home is a great option for those with limited mobility, with an accessible en-suite bedroom and ramps to the private garden. The designs here are a little dated, so they might not suit everyone’s tastes. However, the farmhouse-style kitchen, complete with an AGA, sets the stage for family meals, while the bright conservatory is a perfect spot for afternoon tea.

Nestled within close proximity to the fort, guests can immerse themselves in the area's fascinating past and revel in the tranquil ambiance. Indulge in morning coffees accompanied by panoramic coastal vistas or take a leisurely stroll along the nearby shore. With on-site parking available for up to four cars and an additional space for campervans, convenience meets serenity at this idyllic seaside retreat. Quaint Coastal Getaway

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

Watching the Wheels

Castaway and escape the outside world at this picture-perfect period cottage squirrelled away on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Cut off twice daily from the mainland with the fast-moving tides of the North Sea, the island has a truly magical feel. Spend your days spotting seals sunning themselves on the coastline or bobbing through the waters. Stretch your legs with bracing walks along the vast unspoilt sandy shores – Coves Haven beach on the northern side of Holy Island is gloriously secluded. And soak up the historical splendour of the circa. 1550 Lindisfarne Castle rising from the rock face.

When it's time to rest up at home, the charms of this cottage are hard to resist, with a wood-burning stove to nestle up beside and exposed beams and stonework bringing all the period allure. When thoughts turn to food, there's everything you could need to rustle up a bite to eat in the shaker-style kitchen – or skip cooking and head to the local pub, just a few minute's walk from your door. 

When it's time to say adieu, leaving this island haven is easier than you'd think. Time the tides right, and you'll be over the causeway and back on dry land in no time – the main Northumberland coast is just a few miles away.
