For a traditional seaside holiday, you couldn't be much closer to the water's edge than this smart mews cottage. Set in the historic harbour area of the quaint North Northumberland coastal village of Seahouses, the beach is just a stone's throw away.

Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

When it's time for a dose of sea air, nip to the end of the road, and you can watch the boats bob into shore – made even more magical at sunset. Then take a mosey into the centre for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

This stone-built cottage is just over 300 metres from the seafront in the town of Seahouses. There are bars under 200 metres away too, or you can play some golf or go horse riding nearby. Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

Lying just around the corner from Seahouses Harbour, the stone facade of this home looks like it's been a fixture here for years, but it's a fairly recent addition. This becomes abundantly clear as you glance around the contemporarily styled interior for the first time.

Spread across a single floor, the colour palette of muted greys and whites is bright and inviting, while there's a wealth of surface space in the sleek kitchen for when you want to whip up seafood banquets. The designers haven't completely done away with rustic cosiness, though – what could be a cuter way of ending a productive day than gathering around the crackling flames by the living room's stove?

As already mentioned, the town's harbour is just a three-minute walk away and it's possible to head out on nautical expeditions, including diving and trips to the bird-spotting hotspot, Farne Islands. If you prefer to stay on land, there are walking routes and scenic points aplenty in the surrounding Northumberland Coast AONB, too.

Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. But if you'd rather venture out, there's a dog-friendly pub just over the road, while the centre of Seahouses with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk from your front door.

Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose. A ten-minute drive away is Bamburgh Castle, making this an ideal spot to explore the Northumberland Coast.

Set in the quintessential seaside town of Seahouses, its setting is bang-on. Take a mosey into the centre (a mere 0.8 mile walk away) for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach followed by a beachcombing amble. Treat the family to a game of crazy golf or rock pooling. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

Back home, the Scandi-inspired interiors of this chic home feel like a dose of fresh sea air after busy days on the beach. Marble accents and butter-soft leather armchairs add a dash of luxury, while abstract sea-inspired prints subtly remind us the sea is never far away. Over in the light-filled bedrooms, there are impeccably finished en suite shower rooms for a little added privacy. And the icing on the cake? A suntrap private terrace that's prime for lazy morning coffees with the papers, evening sundowners and anything else in between.

Ideal for seaside romance, this cosy cottage is half a mile from Seahouses Beach and harbourside eateries. While the garden is slightly overlooked by the adjacent homes, we think it's a small price to pay for the south-facing lawn which is a suntrap. Entertainment awaits in the shape of books and games, though there's plenty to do outdoors, including watersports and golfing. Or how about sightseeing? Hop in the car and go three miles to Bamburgh Castle or five miles to Holy Island and Lindisfarne.

A former farmer's cottage just a short drive from Bamburgh and Seahouses, this place has had quite a facelift in recent years and now offers a comfortable and smart home with plenty of luxury touches. A huge vaulted ceiling hangs over the sociable, open-plan living space, where you'll find a high-end kitchen, comfy seating area and dining table – along with big windows and a rather special view. In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Over the Barns

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

Nestled along Northumbria's picturesque coastline like a lighthouse calling to the ocean, this home will leave you feeling very well connected to the sea. Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. But rustic tradition isn’t far away, with an Aga range cooker and log-burner taking you back to days of old. Situated right on the water in Northumberland, a few miles from Bamburgh, this home is a great place to stay if you’re looking to explore the North Sea Coast. When you’re not embarking on coastal walks, stroll over to the centre of Beadnell to spot fishing boats at the waterfront. This historic village leads onto Beadnell Bay, where visitors can go scuba diving, surfing and sailing – although you might want to wait until the warmer months. Look out for little tern, as a colony of national importance resides here, as do Arctic tern.

It’s just a few minutes' walk to the long sandy beach, Bamburgh Castle, and the village centre, where there are a variety of pubs, restaurants, delicatessens and a butcher. The kitchen has everything you need for family-sized meals and patio doors lead to the rear garden where dining is available on the patio. Upstairs, each bedroom has stunning views across fields towards the Cheviot Hills or over the dunes towards the sea.

The main living space, with its high ceilings and traditional wooden beams, is as cosy as it is grand. When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite hearty dishes in the kitchen – we recommend a classic Sunday roast. History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.

The local pub is just a two-minute stroll, while there are also an array of gorgeous coastal walks up through Seahouses, Bamburgh, Newton by the Sea, Embleton and Craster, which are easily reachable by car.

After a long walk on the beach, enjoy a cup of tea in the pretty courtyard garden and rest your feet. Or, if it's chilly, warm up next to the log burner on the modern chesterfield sofa in the stylish living space. We love the cool grey and sunny yellow colour scheme here.
