This home is a perfect example of how to bring a historic property up to date without completely disregarding its heritage. The manor house was built back in 1692 and the interior has recently undergone a renovation by Dolly Daydream Designs. As you walk from room to room — and there's certainly quite a few of them — you'll notice that an emphasis has been placed on characterful antique pieces, from four-poster beds and the artwork in gilded frames to the grandfather clock in the hallway. This respectful curation extends to the functional items, in particular the wood burner stove in the living room and the Aga in the kitchen. After a while, you'll soon discover that there's no shortage of spots to sit and relax — our favourite is either the grand dining room or the walled garden to the back of the address. Around the front, there's a lawn with plenty of space for games, as well as a barbecue and lots of seating for afterwards. If the weather is being kind, there's a natural weir that's ideal for wild swimming only five minutes' walk away. The dreaming spires of Oxford take just over thirty-five minutes to reach in the car, Daylesford Organic is a similar distance, and the iconic Soho Farmhouse takes approximately forty-five minutes. From organic food deliveries to nannies, horse riding, butlers, private chefs and cocktail makers to private boat hire so that you can take a trip along the River Thames – your host can organise almost anything to make your stay most enjoyable with a little bit of notice in advance.

With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

From the outside, you’d expect Rosemary & Thyme to be a standard Cotswolds cottage, but once you’re inside it’s clear it’s something more. Walking through is like a tour of cultures and styles, from French farmhouse to Belle Epoque, and Rococo to Oriental. There’s a lovely garden, and a short drive away is the pretty town of Lechlade. Venture any further west, and you’ll be deep in rolling hills and villages that epitomise the Cotswolds, but with such an alluring home, you might not want to leave it.

Swap the big smoke for the great outdoors at this luxurious Cotswolds lakeside estate, located just a five-minute drive from the pretty market town of Lechlade-on-Thames. 

Surrounded by rolling meadows, woodland, and pristine waters and offering a five-star concierge service (think private dining with a bartender and spa treatments), this is lakeside living, but not as you know it.

Conceived by Philippe Starck, with eye-popping interiors designed by Kelly Hoppen and Jade Jagger (to name a few), and zip-lining and forest activities created by the likes of Ben Fogle – this place has been given the star treatment.

Inside the lodge, a chef-worthy kitchen is ready to put to use for a big dinner party. But if you fancy a night off cooking, let a private chef take the reins for fine dining while you soak up the lakeside magic outside – there's room for you all around the outside dining table for alfresco meals beneath the stars. Then take things inside and spill into the open-plan living space (the wood-effect fireplace keeps things extra toasty in winter months) or sneak away to the cosy snug with a good book for some time out.

When it's time to get active, you can enjoy wild swimming or paddle about in the home's kayak. Or take it easy with a relaxing afternoon in the spa – an indoor swimming pool and sauna are at the ready.

We don't think it's an over-exaggeration to say that this has to be one of the most remarkable homes in our collection. Perched on the banks of Huntsman Lake, you're never short of an exquisite view because the whole exterior is made of glass. Yes, that's right. The unique property was designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo and is full of luxuries and surprises.

Head up to the roof, for instance, where you'll find a huge terrace complete with a garden and a sweeping panorama of a further three lakes. Closer to the water, there's another decking area where you can relax on one of the loungers and watch the local birdlife.

The only place in the house which isn't treated to sights of the jaw-dropping scenery is down in the basement. Why head down here, you ask? Well, there's a nine-seater cinema, bar area, Jacuzzi, sauna and full-size snooker table. That's why.

Back upstairs, the interior design does its best to demand your attention against fierce opposition and succeeds at times with the bold modern artwork, designer furniture and staircase carved from a 500-year old tree from Slovenia. The kitchen is a thing of beauty too, with both tandoori and pizza ovens, plus a wine fridge — which the concierge will fill up upon request.

In a home that constantly manages to surprise, the fact that it has excellent eco-credentials is another string to its bow. A combination of an air thermal heat pump, solar panels, heat recovery systems and triple-glazed glass means that energy consumption is low, while the wood on the exterior uses the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban for waterproofing, rather than chemicals. Venture outside in the summer and you can hire a boat or go wild swimming in the lake, or book a go on the zip-line and experience the landscape from a thrilling perspective.

Although you might think that it would be hard to beat the immediate surroundings when it comes to looks, the Cotswolds AONB can be reached in ten minutes' drive and has some pretty swoon-worthy views itself. The town of Cirencester only takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, too.

Time For Reflection

Nestled in the quaint Cotswold village of Clanfield, and set on a five-acre estate with picturesque fields, grazing sheep, and a walled garden featuring a pond, this home offers a tranquil retreat. The house boasts traditional features and modern finishes, with plenty of space for a family or group of friends – keep in mind this home is only suitable for children over ten and infants under twelve months. During colder months, you can cosy up by the open fireplace in the sitting room or the wood-burning stove in the family room, while the picturesque garden is perfect for summer barbecues. Feel like dining out? The village's two 17th-century pubs are just a short walk away.

While out on the deck, there are memorable 180-degree views of the surrounding lake to soak up from the stylish seating and dining area – best enjoyed with a glass of something crisp in hand and the barbecue fired up. 

When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, how does paddle-boarding, kayaking, rowing, fishing, and sailing off your own private jetty sound? A mesmerising location, impeccable interior design and plenty of exciting things going on in the locale – this strikingly modern lodge perched on the banks of Bowmoor Lake, in the edge of the Cotswolds, seems to have all the luck. The views of the water from the deck, from the private beach with fire pit or even just out through the floor-to-ceiling windows are soothing, but you can easily liven things up with some water sports or outdoor activities arranged by the surrounding resort, or a visit to its world-class spa for a pampering session. It still feels like a traditional home, with its flagstones, mullioned windows and fantastic fireplace, but with all the modern amenities you need. Only a 5-minute drive to the year-round Cotswold Wildlife Park, there’s also a critically-acclaimed gastropub less than 100m away. With a mature southwest-facing walled garden, patio, barbecue for warmer months, snuggle up by the fire, relax in the hot tub, or pack your wellies for scenic walks direct from the front door when it's cooler. It's a short walk into the village of Little Coxwell, where you can enjoy a traditional pub lunch and admire chocolate-box thatched cottages. Missing the town life? It's just a thirty-minute drive to Oxford. 

The Rural Gem

This isn't your typical Cotswolds hideaway, that's for sure. Don't get us wrong, we thought this pad had oodles of charm and plenty of characterful touches, but the mid-century inspired design is more trendy than traditional. Picture plush leather sofas, a statement-making hay-stuffed bench, colourful Farrow & Ball paint and funky antler artwork – it's an immaculate mishmash of styles and textures. And your lovely host has thought of all the details, including a basket filled with locally sourced goodies and a bottle of Prosecco – we thought it was the perfect welcome.

After a wander around the village, curl up with a book in the window seat or pour yourself a glass of wine and get cosy for a Netflix movie night. Light floods through the kitchen thanks to the skylights, making it a great spot to rustle up a meal while listening to your favourite tunes on the Sonos speakers. Come bedtime, snuggle up in the sumptuous beds for a restful night's sleep.

Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the most picturesque villages in the Cotswolds, and this is a fab location right in the heart of town. You'll have a wealth of places to eat and drink on your doorstep, an array of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques to browse, and scenic country walks surrounding you when you fancy an afternoon in the great outdoors.

This Gloucestershire home between the lakes promises paddle-boarding, kayaking and fishing in the freshwater. The home benefits from a terrace for dining alfresco or enjoying a drink on the lounge seats. Stepping inside, the living area is kept cosy thanks to the big wood-burning stove stocked with logs, making this place the perfect retreat all year round. Apart from the spa facilities and water-based activities on the estate, you’ve got 850 acres of forestland to explore by bike or on foot. With a terrace overlooking a tranquil freshwater lake, it's easy to see what drew us to this home. Though as beautiful as the view is, it's not all this house offers. Echoing the surroundings, the modern interior is peaceful and comfortable, with plenty of space for a family getaway. Location-wise, the estate is a sprawling 850 acres of woodland and meadows that you can explore on foot or by bicycle – perhaps plan a visit to the on-site spa post workout. Thrillseekers can paddleboard or fly high on a zip-wire through the treetops, and seeing as how you're in the heart of the Cotswolds, there's also an option of many day trips to quaint neighbouring towns.

The Lakes Hideaway

Flooded with natural light, this idyllic country cottage is the perfect getaway for a group or family looking to up sticks and throw themselves into Cotswolds living - it's no wonder it won Silver at The Beautiful South Awards 2022. Dating back to 1850, it has an abundance of original features (including exposed brick walls, a spectacular fireplace, rich wooden beams and stone walls), but a luxurious, contemporary makeover has transformed it into an extraordinarily comfortable stay. 

The two lounges are the heart of the home, made extra cosy by the roaring inglenook wood-burner and underfloor heating, and they make it so you'll never want to leave once you're stretched out on one of the sofas. Oh and you'll be wowed by the spectacular sun room all the same. Guests who love to cook will enjoy making use of the large kitchen and hosting dinners either in the stone dining room or out on the sunny terrace with its glorious countryside views. The bedrooms are all elegantly styled with soft colour schemes and goose-down bedding – we particularly love the Barcelona chair in front of the French doors in the master bedroom, as well as the gigantic free-standing bath, perfect for an indulgent bubble-filled soak. 

With such stunning interiors, you'll be torn between cosying up and outdoor living while staying here – but the pristine, flower-filled garden that surrounds the home will have you jumping with joy once the sun comes out. Enjoy discovering the local charm of the Cotswolds which combines peace and quiet with endless nature and a touch of quintessential English countryside culture.

This small but perfectly formed shepherd’s hut is a real slice of country life. Set in the grounds of a traditional Cotswold cottage, and surrounded by beautiful countryside, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and tune in to nature. Inside, there’s a cleverly designed pull out and put away bed and the petite kitchen has everything you could need for rustling up a romantic supper. Enjoy your morning coffee on the private patio that overlooks the owner’s small holding, before striking out on one of the local walking trails. In fact, they lean into modernity here – you'll find fast wi-fi, a smart tv, and an electric vehicle charging here. The vibrant greenery covering the home echoes the surrounding landscape, which you can explore more closely on walking and hiking trails. Two pubs are within walking distance, and the River Coln and knights gate aren't much further.

Tucked away in a traditional, honey-coloured stone building, this Cotswolds cottage is an idyllic base from which to explore this beautiful corner of the English countryside. Just off the main tourist trails in Coln St Aldwyn – one of the area’s prettiest villages – this home is the perfect starting point to explore the Cotswolds’ network of picturesque villages and glorious nature walks. Inside, the open-plan living space blends antique and modern furnishings to create a warm welcome, with a wood-burning stove as its focal point. We love the long, rustic dining table in the country-style kitchen whose cobalt blue cabinetry contrasts handsomely with the bright walls that reflect the light coming through the large windows.
