The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection.

The star of the show has got to be the wood-fired hot tub, with views across to the Monnow Valley. Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. Despite the secluded location, plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. After a hard day of hiking in the hills, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage in the on-site treatment room.

The sleek white kitchen is plenty large enough to make a mess in, while the honey-coloured bathroom looks like it could belong in a spa. Beyond the twelve acres of private parkland that surrounds the property, there are plenty of walking routes in the surrounding Brecon Beacons National Park and the quaint town of Brecon is only ten minutes away in the car.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

There are plenty of trails leading straight from the front door up onto the high peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Alternatively, enjoy more leisurely strolls along the canal. Despite the easy access to the pristine landscapes, you'll find plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. Finally, there's an on-site treatment room where you can indulge in various therapy treatments ranging from manicures to deep tissue massages after a hard day hiking in the hills.
