The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

Free on-street parking is a bonus, and Shrewsbury train station is a fifteen-minute walk for easy travel links.

Located on the edge of the main square, you're going to struggle to find a more central home than this renovated townhouse in Shrewsbury. Step out your front door and you're surrounded by restaurants, shops and a cinema in a Grade-I listed Elizabethan building.

Rather impressively for an address with such a prime position, this home is huge and can quite easily accommodate large groups. The building is split into three separate apartments on each floor, which adds a welcome degree of privacy for families travelling together.

The design throughout is fresh and contemporary, with discernible mid-century influences visible in the furnishings. That being said, a few period features have been retained in the interior's modernisation, including embellishments on the ceiling, large sash windows and opulent fireplaces — sadly only ornamental, but still pretty nonetheless.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the historic market town, Shrewsbury Castle is seven minutes' walk in one direction and the riverside parkland in The Quarry is five minutes by foot the opposite way. The surrounding county is full of unspoilt countryside and you can drive over to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in just under twenty minutes, too.

You’ll have access to the riverbanks of the Severn, where you can fish or set off for a wild swim.

Built in 1780, this Grade II listed folly makes for a quirky and charm-filled base in Shropshire. From an elevated position on a rock knoll, it boasts glorious views across the countryside. It also sits within 1.75 acres of enclosed gardens and looks out over a lake. It’s a fairytale-worthy setting, perfect for romantic breaks – but it can also accommodate friends or small families with older children. You can look forward to a rather grand drawing room, as well as the original quarry tiles in the cosy kitchen. When the season is right, you can even pick your own fruit from the trees – however you spend your stay, it’s sure to be memorable.

Both bedrooms have their own en-suite, one with a king-size leather sleigh bed and slipper bath, and the other with twin singles or a super-king size bed and an en-suite shower room. Outside, guests can enjoy superb views from the rear terrace with garden furniture and charcoal barbecue. Off-road parking is available for two cars.

This Grade II-listed barn conversion is one of three on a private farm development in the peaceful Shropshire Hills, all boasting panoramic views. The two-storey home was originally a working granary and has been sympathetically restored to retain many original features, including troughs and stalls. The open-plan sitting/dining area boasts a cozy wood burning stove, and the modern kitchen is well-equipped with a large central island. Upstairs, there is a main suite with a king-size leather sleigh bed and en-suite bathroom, as well as a second bedroom that offers either twin single beds or a 6' super-king size zip and link bed, also with its own en-suite shower room. The ground floor has underfloor heating throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural light. Outside, guests can relax on the enclosed front and rear patio and gravel gardens with garden furniture and charcoal barbecue. The property has uninterrupted far reaching views and exposed beams, stonework, and flagstone floors. Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. Sip glasses of bubbly while soaking away your troubles, and look forward to being woken up by birdsong in the morning.

Amidst rural nature, it's hard to believe you'll actually only be a ninety-minute drive away from Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham in this secluded spot – situated a five-minute drive from the village of Maesbury. Not far away from the Welsh borders, when here it's time to restore your energy and escape the mundane for a luxury cottage retreat. Boasting characterful traditional features and bags of rustic charm – rather surprisingly the home does not compromise modern home comforts. Welcoming and cosy, the interiors reflect the countryside setting from the moment you walk through the stable-like door. With original oak beams and reclaimed wooden panelling, the open plan ground floor centres around the kitchen and lounge area. Think handcrafted redwood, a wood-burning stove as well as antique trinkets and furniture throughout. Alongside the traditional log burner, an eco-friendly, wood-pellet underfloor heating system provides constant hot water. From the kitchen, head out to the private patio area for a cup of tea in the fresh country air. Guests can also access a larger, less private, courtyard which offers a perfect sun trap from which to enjoy the summer's sun. All around the farm, you'll find peaceful places to relax and explore – over by The Orchard there's a spot for children to play freely and there's even a barbecue area in an adjacent field. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.

Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

The house is perfect for large groups of up to 15 guests, with ample space in the dining room when booked together with the cottage. The property features seven well-appointed bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a ground floor shower room. Guests can enjoy endless entertainment provided by the games room, luxury hot tub for six people, croquet, boules, Xbox One S, Bose SoundLink and a good selection of board games. There is also a tennis court available at the owner's house nearby. The property is pet-friendly, welcoming up to two well-behaved dogs (four with prior agreement from the owner) for a small additional charge. The location is ideal for exploring the picturesque "black and white" village of Pembridge as well as other nearby attractions such as Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and Dunkerton's Cider Mill.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Snuggled at the southern point of Snowdonia National Park in Sarnau, this quaint abode is made for rural exploration. If you don't fancy the challenging terrains of Snowdon, there are various walking and cycling trails close by to the cottage.

This snug home infuses a homespun and rustic feel with modern comforts. Find stone walls and wooden beams looking into a TV, DVD player and contemporary cooking items. It's the perfect blend of tradition and technology. 

To really capture the privacy and peace of your home, sit out on the garden bench and admire the stunning views. Situated in a quiet hamlet, the only sounds you'll hear are from the animals in the nearby fields.

If you'd prefer to get out and explore the nearby area, the encompassing landscape is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails. If two wheels aren't your scene, Bala is just four miles away and is an oasis of water sports, abseiling and kayaking.

Once you've explored the diverse scenery around your tranquil haven, visit the welcoming pubs and restaurants around Bala. For a real Welsh treat, a Michelin star restaurant resides up the road in Llandrillo.

With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe.

It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions.
