For splendid seclusion set out in the Somerset countryside, this beautiful barn conversion is the perfect escape for couples and families looking to slow down and enjoy each others company. Viewed from the outside, the building wears its humble origins with pride, but sleek skylights and floor-to-ceiling panes of glass looking out over the landscaped garden allude to what lies in store. The open-plan kitchen/dining/living area is the heart of the home, with plenty of natural light and comfy seating beneath its vaulted ceilings. A fab wood burner that serves to heat the entire space and makes for a welcome spot to huddle around after wintry walks. Blue kitchen units, an electric range cooker and a rustic dining table only enhance the contemporary farmhouse style. Elsewhere on the ground floor, you'll find a couple of cosy and inviting bedrooms (one with an en-suite bathroom), both with direct garden access. Clamber up the oak staircase, and there's one final bedroom that makes for a tranquil retreat at the end of the day. Outside, the garden offers a lovely spot to relax and reflect, with views overlooking the surrounding countryside. There's plenty of seating that makes for fantastic alfresco feasts, while the firepit ensures you can enjoy gazing up at the stars well after the heat of the day has ebbed away. After a day walking through the fields, we can think of nothing better than returning home for a soothing soak in the covered hot tub. The locale is quintessentially Somerset – with the seaside town of Weston Super Mare, stunning Cheddar Gorge, the festival town of Glastonbury and the city of Wells, between ten and forty minutes' drive away.

The crenulated, columned Victorian face of this home is a far cry from a typical, rustic farmhouse. The interior is manor home in miniature with chesterfields around an original fireplace in the main living room, long darkwood dining tables by the bay window, and chandeliers lighting huge bedrooms. Each room retains an element of Victoriana. Attached to the farmhouse, the old cider shed is the kind of country-rustic you’d expect  – flagstone floors in the kitchen, timber beams exposed in eaves bedrooms and a wood-burning in the master suite. The real highlight is the wood-fired hot tub outside beneath the pergola. It looks out over the beautifully manicured gardens, bursting with lavender and colourful hydrangea. If you’re not dining in the grand room inside, head out to the Italian-style loggia where dining is set for the whole group beneath a wooden roof. The eco-lodge itself is modern, sleek, and comfortable. You have a beautiful kitchen at your disposal, great for preparing meals to be served on the raised terrace. After a good feasting, enjoy a digestif on the loungers and see if you can spot any rare birds. With a private hot tub, the soaking schedule is completely up to you, as is the time you spend doing nothing but relaxing. In the evening, enjoy a movie night by the wood-burning stove and then retreat to the luxurious bedrooms for a silent night’s sleep.

Bursting with character, this Stogursey cottage is as cosy as it looks. On winter days, snuggle up in front of the log burner, while summer evenings call for sundowners in the quaint garden. Of course, with the traditional charm comes a few eccentricities, mainly the twisting staircase and low beamed ceilings. Scenic walking trails through the Quantock Hills are practically on your doorstep – perfect for strolls with the pups in tow. Further afield, Taunton and Glastonbury are within easy driving distance, offering fun for the whole family.

Rural Rendezvous

Escaping into the English countryside for a weekend (or two) is exactly the sort of thing Trailblazer Cottage was made for. This is a beautifully intimate retreat for two, perfect for those who love the idea of taking short trips to the neighbouring towns and sampling the farmers' markets in and around Cheddar — but it's also perfect for those who just want to relax. Staying here might make you change your adventurous plans and simply lounge on the decked terrace with a good book and a glass of nice wine, contemplating whether three sessions in the hot tub per day is just a little too much. It isn't. With a variety of fresh seasonal produce on offer in the area, every meal can be special and you've got a modern metro-tiled kitchen to try them all out. When the weather is less than Mediterranean, stay indoors and test the swanky pedestal bathtub for a spa-like experience and enjoy a movie night on the cosy sofa. When the weather permits, you can admire the sunset and sunrise from every room in the house as well. Light pours in through the French doors, extending the living space out to the great outdoors. Speaking of, go hiking along the sublime Cheddar Gorge, only a six-minute drive from home. It's well worth a trip.

This modern eco-lodge combines the typical countryside retreat with contemporary mod-cons and tech to create the perfect weekend away, where nothing but a little rest and relaxation will do. With plenty of nooks to hide and read inside and out, as well as the fully functional outdoor hot tub entirely at your disposal, you'll feel far removed from the fuss and flutter of your busy schedules in no time at all. There's also a leather chaise indoors and a chic open-plan kitchen-come-diner where you can tackle a few easy recipes with the help of the local produce. The living space is a bright and airy spot to unwind, with its high ceilings, dramatic spotlighting and French doors. Upon sliding these doors, you'll step onto a decked out terrace with a couple of trendy Acapulco chairs and a starlight canopied roof – it's calling out for alfresco drinks come evening. On top of all that, there's even a swanky freestanding bathtub for those rainy day hot tub alternatives. If you can peel yourself away from this sanctuary of calm, take a wander around the farmers' markets in the nearby village of Draycott. Or else, go for a morning walk through the Strawberry Fields Park, or venture out on an exporative day spent hiking up Cheddar Gorge, only a short seven-minute drive from home – cameras at the ready, the views here are sublime. And after a day spent embracing the great outdoors, retreat to the cosy living room sofa for a movie night in and prepare for another day of doing very little. Just the way we like it.

The first thing you'll notice is the wrap-around deck, which boasts a comfy rattan sofa, an alfresco eating area and a few loungers where you can really put your feet up and relax. It's the perfect spot to indulge in some sunset wining and dining, followed by a soak in the private hot tub as the stars twinkle in the expansive sky above you. 

Inside, you'll find deep shades of mulberry and little touches of luxury everywhere you look – a wine fridge in the kitchen keeps bottles of bubbly perfectly chilled, a crackling wood-burner in the living area is ideal for wintery evenings, and the sumptuous free-standing bathtub is an excellent way to unwind after a hike through the Somerset countryside.

Speaking of exploring, be sure to pack your walking shoes – this area is rife with outdoor adventures. Cheddar Gorge, just ten minutes away by car, is the most well-known spot, but you can start your expeditions much closer to home with some birdwatching at the wildlife reserves or a wander down the West Mendip Way, which runs right past the park. This cosy apartment is a sweet option for couples or solo travellers in search of a rustic retreat. Featuring a little balcony with the great views, a garden and snug rooms, there is everything you could need to relax and unwind. From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms.
