Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

There's plenty of prep space for cooking, so pour yourself a glass of wine, put a vinyl on the record player and let your culinary skills run wild. Outside, the sunny terrace and manicured garden are perfect for unwinding on sunnier days. Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

This beautiful period home is right in the heart of historic Bath – in fact, Jane Austen lived in the terrace opposite from 1804-1805. You can definitely sense that period grandeur inside, with impressively high ceilings, marble fireplaces and gorgeous sash windows looking straight out onto Green Park. Each room feels light-filled and cosy – curl up on the plush sofa with a good book on rainy days (we recommend anything by Jane Austen to really set the mood), settle down for a light meal at the table and watch the world go by from the window, or nod off after a busy day in the sumptuous bedroom. And there's plenty to do right on your doorstep, with shops, restaurants, markets, museums and the Theatre Royal all within walking distance. Green Park Station around the corner hosts a Saturday morning farmers' market which is well worth a visit, and the must-see Roman Baths are just a quick seven-minute stroll away.

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight.

Set into a lush hillside in Bath with a stunning garden and lavish outdoor decks, we can begin to see how this location received a 5 star gold by the Tourist Board. The living spaces are exemplary- we loved the high spec, fully stocked kitchen, the endless entertainment options that include both books and Netflix, and all the rooms opening up to lush green expanses. At a fifteen minute walk from the Widcombe Parade, you have access to restaurants for varying palates, pubs, cafes and other amenities. While the historic sites, museums and shopping in Bath will keep you rather busy in the day, you can end your day with a therapeutic session at the Thermae Spa or a show at The Theatre Royal.

Occupying the top two floors of a classic Grade II Georgian terrace, this thoroughly modern pad puts you within minutes of countless sights, including the Roman Baths, Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey. It’s not just its stellar locale that caught our eye, though. Decorated and previously owned by a superyacht owner, the space is all about glossy polished finishes and bespoke designer details, from the Andrew Martin furnishings to the main bedroom’s cushions by Westwood and McQueen’s former textile designer. More luxe additions include a boiling water tap in the kitchen, the bathroom’s freestanding tub and Egyptian cotton bedding. What’s more, you’ve got access to a beautiful communal garden –  a reminder of the former orchard here tended by the Abbey’s Benedictine brethren.

With a glimpse of the Abbey from one window and a peek of the Roman Baths from the other, boltholes in Bath don't get much more central than this. Perched on the top floor of a Georgian townhouse, you'll need to climb a fair amount of stairs to get to this apartment. But with knockout vistas of the city's skyline as your reward, we don't think you'll mind. While the chimes of the Abbey's bells are utterly charming, they might not suit guests looking for marathon lie-ins. Although, with the city at your feet, we suspect you'll be up and at 'em anyway.

With such a central postcode, you can explore the sights on foot, discover great restaurants or go shopping in peace, knowing that you can pop back home whenever you need to. The apartment's high ceilings, tall windows and stunning chandelier deliver old-world sophistication and while we love the period charm, we appreciate that this home's been modernised where it matters. A sleek kitchen is ideal to rustle up simple meals at home, while the walk-in showers are a pleasure to use. Look no further if it's a practical base in Bath that you're after.

It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.
