This home dates back to the twelfth century and was even owned by Henry VIII a couple of centuries later. As soon as the moment you step through the gigantic wooden door, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. 

You’ll have access to the first and second floor of the home, which are packed with historic charm and traditional details. We love the spiral staircases and narrow corridors leading to cosy corners and antique furniture. Exposed stone walls and dark timber beams add to the characterful decor of this memorable home. The master bedroom features a wood-carved four-poster bed with intricate artistry, and a roll-top bath in the nearby bathroom. 

In the kitchen, it's easy to imagine the cooks of yesteryear bustling about the hearth while preparing a banquet for the Lord of the house. Happily, things are a little easier these days – there’s now a beautiful farmhouse kitchen with a range cooker. When you’ve whipped up a feast fit for a king, it can be served at the nine-foot table, where you’ll sit until late sipping wine and catching up. 

The Wye Valley is on your doorstep with its crumbling castle ruins, Arthurian landmarks, and quiet market towns. A ten-minute walk takes you into Caldicot centre, buzzing with cafes, shops and a handy train station. Yet the manor's sprawling grounds and walled rose gardens make it feel as though you’re away from it all.

This home is set on a working dairy farm, and your host is happy to give you a tour of the farm – something the kids will probably adore. Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

These luxurious shepherd’s huts are an excellent choice for a romantic retreat. This quirky home can be found in a secluded meadow on the edge of a natural wood, close to the ancient settlement of Penterry. There are stunning views to be discovered nearby, and you can relax and unwind amid the tranquillity of the Wye Valley. The bathroom, with a bathtub and separate shower, is in a separate shepherd’s hut, while the petite kitchen and bedroom are in a studio layout in the main hut. Space is limited, but the setting more than makes up for that.

Many barn conversions across the British countryside tend to be relatively small and cosy affairs, but this example in rural Gloucestershire is a comparative colossus with a wealth of social space and amenities.

The design inside lies on the rustic side of things, with exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams to be spotted alongside a wood-burning stove, a clawfoot bathtub and an ornate bed frame in the master bedroom. That being said, there's a contemporary sheen where it matters, especially in the pastel bedrooms, sleek bathrooms and the kitchen complete with an Aga.

So how would you fill your time at the address? Well, when the weather permits, you can make the most of the large garden with a lawn big enough for games and a patio area for alfresco feasts. There's even a hot tub ready and waiting for a relaxing spot to pass the golden hour. If, however, grey clouds make an appearance at any point, don't fret – there's a snooker table inside, as well as another games room in the external former stables, that should keep guests entertained for a while.

In the local area, the town of Lydney is only eight minutes' drive away when you need supplies, while both Newport and Gloucester lie about forty-five minutes away in the car. There's a wide choice of natural attractions to be discovered nearby as well, ranging from the Forest of Dean and Puzzlewood to Clearwell Caves.

This magnificent Georgian home is steeped in history and filled with eighteenth-century glamour, from the antique sideboard to the cast-iron fireplace. Set on the first floor, this storey was often referred to by architects of the time as the 'Piano Nobile', since it was the part of the building that had the highest ceilings and tallest windows. Best of all, these glorious sash windows look out over picturesque views of the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park, so you'll get to admire one of Bath's most iconic sights from the comfort of your own home. When you're ready to explore the city, it takes about fifteen minutes on foot to reach the famous Roman Baths, as well as a range of modern spas should you fancy trying it for yourself.

It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. A lot of time and thought has been put into converting the historic chapel that is now The Burrow. Nestled in a tranquil spot of countryside surrounded by rolling hills, the space feels authentically rustic but still comfortable and elegant. The tall arch windows provide floods of natural light and beautiful views of the landscape, including the inviting (and heated) swimming pool. While remote location would be difficult for guests without a car, it also makes it a great spot for a romantic getaway. 



The Burrow

Set in Ford, an attractive hamlet along the banks of the River Windrush, this romantic cottage offers the highest levels of charm and comfort for your Cotswolds escape. It’s hidden away within the grounds of the host’s own home, but offers complete privacy. There’s a small but well-equipped galley kitchen with a Nespresso machine and milk frother for a little luxury morning coffee. But our favourite bit is the four-poster, king-size bed which guarantees a luxurious night’s sleep. just what you need after a day tackling some of the best hiking routes in the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds Way runs right by the cottage and walks around Sudeley Castle are just a few miles away.

Enjoy a romantic stay at this handsome barn conversion, lying at the end of a track, on a family-run arable farm, surrounded by fields – this is a sublime retreat. Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

Shakespearean Elegance

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

Staying in this home is like stepping into a scene from an Austen novel – we can just picture Emma Woodhouse wandering the grounds. Corniced ceilings, antique furniture, country views – there's so much character in this Grade II historic building. The home is part of a grand country estate in Wiltshire, but you'll feel as if you have the whole place to yourself in this private south wing. With the living room’s ample seating in front of the fire and the charming wooden breakfast table, you will be equally comfortable drinking tea or wine in elegance. Make sure to stop by a farm shop on the way to cook up a delicious meal in the kitchen or pre-order fresh or frozen meals to make your stay even easier. Take walks in the gorgeous landscaped gardens, stroll over the bridge on the water, and as night falls gather round the fire pit with drinks. You could spend all day at this country estate, but there's plenty to see in the local area too. You're just a six-minute drive from Stonehenge, and it's worth travelling to Salisbury to visit the historic cathedral and wander the cobbled streets. A welcome hamper brimming with local goodies, including milk, eggs, freshly baked bread, and marshmallows for those obligatory s'mores, will help to settle you in. And you'll bank a blissful night's sleep here – your only neighbours are the occasional peacock or deer strutting by. While away your days watching nature unfold outside on the terraces - the private elevated balcony looking out into surrounding woodland (a great spot for den building) is a beautiful place for a cuppa. Or don your hiking boots for a country walk – perhaps with a pit stop at the welcoming local pub (within walking distance) for a swift pint. Just be sure to make it home for dusk as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside. Placed in one of the UK's largest 'dark-sky' areas, there's much stargazing to be done while getting toasty beside the firepit.
