The open-plan ground floor is kitted out with a long dining table that makes for sociable evenings feasting on food prepared in the fully equipped kitchen. After dinner, grab a seat on the comfy sofa and settle in by the wood burner for the ultimate cosy evening. Climb the custom staircase up to the two double en-suite bedrooms (the twin is on the ground floor) with their unique wetroom style showers that are open to the room (so you better know your roommate pretty well). Wander down the track to Dyrham Park, one of the Cotswold's most stunning National Trust properties. Deep within the Somerset countryside — halfway between Bristol and Bath — lies this pair of converted barns that will provide the most bucolic of countryside getaways. The first has been redesigned to be the living quarters with a whitewashed interior, orbicular hanging lights and a huge collection of house plants — not to mention a wood-burning stove for chillier evenings. Walk out through the huge glass doors and you'll see the second barn, which holds the en-suite bedrooms. The space in between these two buildings has been lovingly tended to, too. Out here, you'll find a stone hot tub built into the lawn, as well as two separate seating areas surrounded by plant beds where you can relax amid dappled Somerset sunshine. On warm days, head out for a walk in the neighbouring valley, which has a private arboretum to visit. It takes just over an hour to reach the top of Kelston Round Hill, which offers sweeping views. Alternatively, you can drive to the centre of Bath in under half an hour.

We're completely hung up on this home in the Cotswolds, a dreamy apartment that's part of a stunning converted barn. Even arriving here has an ethereal charm, driving past miles of rolling green fields to a home that's a true countryside escape. Opening the front door, what first enamoured us were the high ceilings and French doors – the natural light of the farm outside hits every pocket of the living areas. But this home is more than just its light. It's a mix of rustic cottage and manor house in one, where grand stone fireplaces meet ridiculously comfy armchairs. Upstairs the bedroom is stunning and ornate, its large wooden bed living under vaulted ceilings and hugged by baby blue walls. As part of a working farm, the soundtrack to your stay is the cluck of hens and baa of sheep. Immerse yourself in life here, and you'll likely leave an aspiring farmer.

There’s no need to rush at this rustic old barn in the Cotswolds countryside. As you cross through the secret garden and step inside, you’ll understand. The ancient oak beams speak of a time when this home was originally the annexe to the larger barn next door, and the vaulted ceiling adds space to this studio-sized apartment. The windows look onto the shared garden, where the outdoor bench quickly became our favourite spot for an afternoon cuppa. The petit kitchen has all the necessities for a quick meal, and we couldn’t wait to snuggle down in the huge soft bed after a busy day exploring. Speaking of exploring, you’re on a working farm here and your hosts are more than willing to show you around and a few country walks are on the cards with an Iron Age fort just next door. The cities of Bath and Bristol are only half an hour’s drive away, the perfect distance for a day trip.

This hand-crafted wooden cabin sits nestled in a private garden in St Catherine’s. Nature lovers will be in perfect heaven here thanks to the views and easy access to walking trails across the Cotswolds. You’ll also find it’s just a fifteen-minute drive to Bath and there are some lovely pubs about two miles from here. The owners live just down the hill, but you’ll have your own private garden where you can relax in the wood-fired hot tub (available for an extra fee) or if you prefer staying indoors, there's a roll-top bath. Dressing gowns are provided for extra comfort (just bring your own slippers), and the little kitchen has everything you could need for light bites and drinks.

We also. love that the entire basement floor of this home is underfloor heated – blissful in the winter months when you can kick off your shoes and just unwind. Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

Just behind the iconic Lansdown Crescent with its Georgian architecture sits this mews home with a pretty courtyard garden – we especially love this space at night when it's all lit up. The traditional, elegant interiors with their palms and silk flowers have a lived-in feel, paired with characterful features like a large wood-burning fireplace, a stained glass window, mood lighting throughout and a carved stone basin in one of the three bathrooms. It's just a ten-minute stroll from Bath centre so the location is excellent too, though make sure you have comfy shoes on, as the walk back home is uphill.

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight.

Escape to the countryside at this beautiful cottage. It’s tucked away in a peaceful rural hamlet between Bath and Corsham, surrounded by lush Somerset countryside and great walking routes. It’s close enough to Bath, Chippenham, and Castle Combe for day trips – the National Trust’s Lacock is only a fifteen-minute drive away, too. This is a charming home perfect for a family, with a wood-burning stove in the snug/games room for cooler weather, and a pretty garden with a patio for spring and summer visits. Your four-legged friends can come along too – it's a proper home-from-home.

Although this apartment is on the second floor of the barn, it truly feels like a charming country cottage, the type you might come across after hours exploring enchanted woods. That might be down to the oak beams in the ceiling, or the open-plan living area's wooden floors and simple necessities. We think it's a dream stay for young families in particular. The barn itself is surrounded by pigs, chicken, and other animals, with an Iron Age hillfort to explore on walks around the grounds. There's something mesmerising about getting up close with the animals – it's easy to spend hours out here, especially if you have little ones. You can fire up a barbecue, shared with the other homes on-site, for an alfresco feast. Or live like a local, and visit the pubs and restaurants of nearby Chipping Sodbury.

Each room feels light-filled and cosy – curl up on the plush sofa with a good book on rainy days (we recommend anything by Jane Austen to really set the mood), settle down for a light meal at the table and watch the world go by from the window, or nod off after a busy day in the sumptuous bedroom. And there's plenty to do right on your doorstep, with shops, restaurants, markets, museums and the Theatre Royal all within walking distance. Green Park Station around the corner hosts a Saturday morning farmers' market which is well worth a visit, and the must-see Roman Baths are just a quick seven-minute stroll away.

Fitzwilliam

This meticulously furnished, bright flat in the heart of Bath is a treat for anyone who doesn't want to compromise on quality just to get a more central location. We fell in love with the open-plan living area, which features a gorgeous dining bar in the midst of gentle pastel hues and tastefully distressed dressers and end tables. Upon testing the sofas we found that they are wonderfully comfortable. The bedroom is no less impressive — it's quiet and bright, just like the rest of the flat. Overlooking Queen’s Park, you'll find many independent cafes, shops, and restaurants on your doorstep, and both Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths are within a five-minute walk. 

Baldwin's View

Classy. That's the word that springs to mind when we think of this recently refurbished apartment on Milsom Street in Bath. As soon as you walk through the elegant gated entrance with carved granite and mosaic tiling, you know you're in for a treat. The home is immaculately clean, polished and designed to a high standard. A raft of celebrity portraits taken by the owner lines the walls – a wonderful personal touch. Select a bottle from the wine cooler and relax in the spacious living room, which has a sense of occasion with its Charles Eames leather lounge chair and velvet sofa. This light, west-facing room has two large original sash windows with views over the courtyard and chimney pots. We were surprised by how peaceful this place is inside, considering it's located on one of Bath's main shopping streets. It really is an excellent base for exploring the city's centre and sights. There are lots of luxury and high-end boutiques, as well as restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, where you can enjoy a cocktail or relish a delicious lunch (The Botanist and Ivy Brasserie are opposite). For a day of pampering, Thermae Bath Spa is a five-minute walk, or explore Bath's jaw-dropping UNESCO World Heritage architecture, such as the Royal Crescent, a ten-minute stroll away. A great find – it's no wonder this home has impeccable reviews. 

Georgian View

Between the stone walls, A-frame timber beams and double-height ceilings, it should come as no surprise that this rustic bolthole used to be a barn. It's actually situated on a working farm, where animals like chickens, donkeys, goats and the owner's dogs all roam, so if a rural retreat is what you're after, this will do nicely. The open-plan layout is roomy and bright, so you'll have more than enough room to spread out. On sunny days, open the bi-fold doors and enjoy the fresh country air as it wafts through the living area, or step out into the courtyard and for an alfresco afternoon tea. Underfloor heating will keep chilly toes at bay while you're rustling up dinner in the kitchen – a bonus for the winter months – while the wet-room style bathroom has a sleek rainfall shower. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes, as there are walking trails aplenty. You're more than welcome to collect fresh eggs for breakfast, swim in the freshwater pond or sign up for an on-site art class – or speak to the host about arranging special experiences, like private chefs and at-home massages. Dyrham Park is right down the street, there's a rumoured Saxon king's burial site behind the farm and both a cafe and pub are within walking distance. It's an excellent spot for a countryside getaway, but if you crave a bit more pace, Bath is only a thirty-minute drive away.
