This quirky cottage is nestled right by the Suffolk seaside in the pretty town of Aldeburgh. Cosy and homely, it's the perfect base for a family trip to the coast. Wake up each morning and enjoy breakfast in the maritime-themed kitchen, or when the sun is shining, take your tea out into the garden to make the most of the nice weather – there’s even a fire pit for cooler days. On chillier evenings, snuggle up by the wood-burning fire in the lounge with a cup of cocoa for a family game or movie night.

But the best part of all is the location. An invigorating fifteen-minute walk will take you straight to the beach, where you'll find fishermen working in colourful boats and fresh catches of the day being sold from the huts lining the coastline. When you grow peckish, stroll down the Georgian high street and grab a bite from the historic pubs, fish and chip shops or ice cream parlour. For adventures further afield, head up the coast to Southwold or inland for rambles through the woodlands, wildflowers and awe-inspiring Suffolk Heaths.

This statuesque townhouse on the Suffolk coast is the perfect retort to the idea that beach-themed decor is kitschy and overdone. Artistic prints of shells and sea life adorn the walls, with nautical blues and whites providing a base for the contemporary furnishings – this home is seaside chic at its most sophisticated. It’s spread out over three floors so there’s plenty of space to socialise and with a self-contained garden flat, the layout works well for two families or a group of friends who would appreciate some privacy as well. 

The first floor offers large French doors leading out to a magnificent standing balcony overlooking Aldeburgh Beach, the boating lake and the sea, while the space is kept cosy and comfortable with squishy sofas, armchairs and an animal print rug. Elsewhere, stripped pine floors, grey tones and elegant decor make up the bedrooms and there's a modern kitchen for the keen chefs of the group. But our favourite spot has to be out in the shaded courtyard, with a nice cup of coffee and a good book. 

Outside, the big draw of this home is that it's right by the shore, meaning paddling in the sea and midnight strolls are just a few steps away. The rest of Aldeburgh is right on your doorstep, with trendy bars and boutiques rubbing shoulders with traditional fish and chip shops and quaint English pubs.

During the day, there's no doubt you'll be out exploring, but come nightfall, light the fire and curl up in the living room with a great book or enjoy a delicious family dinner around the table. With Sky TV, a DVD player and a collection of board games, you'll have plenty to keep you occupied during a relaxed night at home – and the snacks are sorted, thanks to the welcome hamper filled with local goodies like coffees, ales teas and crisps. But the location is best of all. You're moments from the beach, just off Aldeburgh High Street. Meander over to the sand and shingle coast as you nibble on the town's famous fish and chips. Culture fans will be enthralled by the lively scene in Aldeburgh, with its world-renowned annual music festival, galleries and antique shops to be found at every turn. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types can explore the Suffolk Heaths, dog in tow – Captain's Wood Nature Reserve is just a twenty-minute drive away.

Provisions aren’t an issue either, with a dedicated pantry for plenty of storage.

Of course, with so much to explore in and around this seaside town, you’ll likely be out enjoying the fresh, sea salt air, running around on the beach, eating ice cream in the sun, enjoying fresh seafood at local restaurants, or shopping on the high street. Regardless of how you spend your days, this home will be your hideaway when you come back needing rest and relaxation. 

Suffolk in the Sunshine

This red-brick home is in one of the best locations in Aldeburgh, set on the shingle beach. So you can pop to the seaside, take a dip in the water and nip back for forgotten towels or sunscreen in a jiffy. Aldeburgh town is to the back of the home and it's a short stroll to ice cream parlours, delis, and restaurants. We love exploring the area by whatever means: from hiring a boat to meander the broads to hiking through the numerous nature reserves on the lookout for birdlife. 

Built in 1854, the house has large bay windows on its top floor lounge, with an alcove seat to watch the North Sea waves crashing onto the beach. There are a couple of nice furniture touches – the Chinese dresser and old-fashioned rocking chair, for example. And the pine-clad kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. Bedrooms are spacious and those Georgian windows mean a natural alarm clock of sunlight streaming in.

Part of a former village hall and theatre, this stunning space is vast, to say the least. It's a sizeable chunk of one of the landmark mock Tudor buildings in Thorpeness, recently converted to a handful of homes. 

The main living area was where village plays and dances were once held, so it's just waiting to be filled with family fun and the sound of laughter. With an open kitchen area, big dining table and cosy sofas, it's built for socialising. Down some stairs, but all with windows and plenty of light, you'll find enough bedrooms to keep even large families happy. But if you're looking for the kids, they're more likely to be hanging out on the mezzanine at the top of the house. Furnished with bean bags, it's a great den for gaming. 

If you can motivate the crew to leave the house together, Thorpeness Beach is just a five-minute walk away, along with the boating lake, the golf course and a range of shops and cafes. Or explore Aldeburgh, once home to composer Benjamin Britten, a five-minute drive away.

Situated in the pretty seaside village of Thorpeness, the apartment commands magnificent seafront views. And as dusk settles and blues fade to grey, come together in the stylish living room for an evening meal with your favourite people as you catch a glimpse of the setting sun. Should you ever tire of the sea (doubtful, we know), you’ll find Thorpeness Meare just a short walk away too. A boating lake like no other, it has over forty acres of water. Pack a picnic and hire out one of the rowing boats – it’s the perfect way to while away an afternoon. Or simply take a stroll through the streets full of quirky buildings (be sure to search out the story behind all those mock Tudor and Jacobean buildings). Whichever way you choose to spend the day, it seems impossible not to relax here.

A new home built in keeping with traditional local architecture, this delightful timber cottage overlooks acres of farmland. Set on a quiet country road, it's replaced a former farm outbuilding and takes in uninterrupted views across the fields. 

Designed to be as roomy and modern inside as it is characterful outside, you'll have a bright, open home over two floors. With all-white walls and wood floors, there's a crisp, contemporary look to everything, with comfy, practical furnishings. A well-kitted-out kitchen is open-plan to the dining area and sofas, while two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows feature patio doors out to the covered terrace. And we love the large bedroom upstairs, with its pretty views and iron bed.

Dog-friendly, you can head off for walkies each morning or jump in the car and drive to nearby Orford Ness or Aldeburgh. Walk or cycle to the heart of Orford in less than half an hour, take in a music event at Snape Maltings or cycle to the nearest pub for lunch – it's all within easy reach.

Discover all of its charms with a stay at this home commanding the entire end of the iconic Ogilvie Hall – one of the village's many Tudor-style buildings built in the 1920s. Inside, a galleried living space drenched in natural daylight brings all the wow factor – as does the dining area, perched upstairs on a mezzanine to make the most of the views through the oak and glass balustrade. 
 
Friends or family getting together will appreciate how spaced out the home feels, with the bedrooms and three bathrooms placed apart over the four storeys to give everyone a little extra privacy. With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, just over two miles away, and to the sea at Aldeburgh (or it’s seven minutes in the car). You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.

Step back in time at this meticulously restored Regency cottage. Your hosts have poured their time and energy into sourcing period-specific reclaimed materials and equipping the home with antique furnishings to create a cosy and charming English escape that offers the very best of coast and country.

All that effort has clearly paid off, as evidenced by the beautiful interior. From the Victorian roll-top bath to the eighteenth-century range and the wainscotting on the walls – every effort has been made to make it feel as authentic as possible. Even the mod cons, such as the TV, are hidden away inside bread ovens that are built into the chimney so as not to shatter the illusion.

At the top of the narrow staircase is the twin bedroom, through which you enter the main bedroom – a pretty common arrangement for houses of this period.

Step outside, and you'll find a beautifully maintained nature reserve right on your doorstep. Your hosts bought it in 2015 and have spent the intervening years slowly restoring and exposing its beauty, with winding footpaths leading to conveniently placed benches, soaring Scots pine trees and ancient oaks – perfect for a reflective moment in nature or a ride on the supplied bikes.

For adventures further afield, you'll find maps detailing footpaths that run to the world-class concert hall at Snape Maltings, two-and-a-half miles away, and continue through forests and past lakes, leading all the way to the sea at Aldeburgh. 

The Miller's Cottage

We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.
 
There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde, just over two miles away. Or head to Aldeburgh (seven minutes in the car) – you can borrow some bikes and cycle there in around thirty minutes too.



Jacobean Gem

Set in the tiny riverside village of Snape, this characterful cottage is like a fairy-tale setting come to life – but with better wifi. In the charming streets close by, you’ll find cosy pubs for a swift pint and hearty grub and village shops for browsing. Or head for Snape Maltings on the River Alde (ten minutes on foot), where you’ll find a myriad of boutiques, galleries, cafes, restaurants, a farmers market, and grand performance spaces – it’s the location for the renowned Aldeburgh music festival. And let’s not forget the coast. Make the morning of it and walk the picturesque six-mile path along the Alde estuary to Aldeburgh’s coastline, or jump in the car, and you’ll be there in nine minutes flat. But there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the property; lounge on the grass in the spacious, landscaped garden before firing up the barbecue, or dive into a good book in front of the wood-burning stove. We’re big fans of the light-filled extension at the rear of the home, which floods the dining room, hall, and contemporary kitchen with natural light. It’s a wonderful spot to gather the troops over lazy breakfasts as you hatch plans for your next adventure in Suffolk.

Pack your tennis whites and brush up on your croquet etiquette for a stay in this chic barn conversion. Positioned in the picturesque village of Knodishall, only a few miles from the Suffolk coast, there's plenty to keep active families occupied – the communal grounds have a tennis court and assortment of garden games, while inside, you'll find a cosy wood-burning stove for relaxed nights at home. The interior exudes an atmosphere of Scandi cool – think sleek sofas, bright living spaces and skylights in the bedrooms so you can fall asleep under the stars. Our favourite spot is the lovely patio, the perfect spot to savour a morning coffee or unwind with a glass of wine on summer evenings.

A short stroll will take you to the local pub in Knodishall, ideal for nights when you don't fancy cooking. Or venture a little further to discover Aldeburgh's brilliant boutiques, pebble beach, colourful huts and tasty ice cream parlour – just a ten-minute drive away.

Sloe Down

The Suffolk Coast and Heaths is one of only forty-six areas given the title ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. And when your home is located in the award-winning region itself, it’s easy to see why. This cottage is one of six converted barns dotted around a central courtyard in the lush, Suffolk countryside. The farmyard sounds may be gone (although there’s still a working livery onsite), but the rural charm remains. While the home is kitted out for 21st-century living, we love the original features of the former barn – exposed brickwork and thick timber beams remind you of its rustic roots. The livestock certainly must have lived in style, as you’ll find a spacious open-plan living area with understated elegance. Neutral tones create a calming vibe, but another relaxed spot is the private patio where you can sip your morning Earl Grey. Take a wander out into the fields, where you’ll find uninterrupted views across acres of farmland towards Tunstall Forest. The village of Iken is a thirteen-minute stroll from home, or hop in the car for the same amount of time to reach Aldeburgh – grab a portion of fish and chips and make the most of its shingle beach.

This elegant, recently built home is set in the heart of Thorpeness, just a two-minute walk from the beach. Typical black wood clads the exterior while inside, neutral shades, light wood and touches of soft blue echo the tranquil coastal location and make it easy to instantly feel relaxed and at home. A wood-burning stove wood-clad walls and pine furniture creates a modern farmhouse feel, just what we want from a countryside retreat. 

Bi-fold doors lead from the large dining room and kitchen to the enclosed garden. This spot is lovely for summertime drinks under the sun, courtesy of the wrought-iron dining set on the patio. At the bottom of the garden you’ll find a shaded spot with chairs beneath a wooden pergola, surrounded by greenery. 

The village itself is famous for its 1920s mock Tudor houses and 'Meare' - a manmade lake with boats of every colour, perfect for exploring its Peter Pan-inspired islands. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand and you can walk along it to the pretty town of Aldeburgh where you’ll find some of the best fish and chips in the world.

The pretty village of Orford is a twenty-minute walk away, home to restaurants, pubs and the unique polygonal tower of Orford Castle. If you fancy swapping rolling pastures for sand and sea, it’s only a twenty-minute drive to the pretty coastal town of Aldeburgh.

This historic garden cottage in Snape is perfect for a solo trip or a couple’s romantic getaway in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. The studio sits on the land of the Old Mill, which dates back to 1797. It was the famous Suffolk composer Benjamin Britten who converted the cottage into his studio in 1937 and composed some of his greatest operas. Now a fresh, modernised space, the studio has retained plenty of its charm as well as a private lawn with lovely green views. Well-laid out with a full kitchen, dining area and a cosy sleeping and living space, you’ll have all you need to relax and unwind before and after exploring the local surroundings. 

Set less than a mile from the renowned Snape Maltings complex, art and culture enthusiasts can enjoy fine dining, shops, art galleries and a diverse programme of music and dance at the concert hall. Lovers of the outdoors can take advantage of the many countryside walks and cycle paths as well as boat trips down the river Alde, and it’s just a short drive to the seaside town of Aldeburgh with its wide stretch of sandy beach and plenty of art and antique shops to discover.

The Composer's Studio

There is plenty of history to be found in this glorious period home in Orford, which dates back to the 16th century. You’ll find yourself admiring the antique details, such as the exposed beams, inglenook fireplace, plaster pargeting and traditional wooden staircase, all of which add to the unique, cosy ambience. 

Groups of friends or family will have plenty of room to spread out in the generous living areas, and kids will love the snug, giving them their own space to chill out and play. The lovely open-plan kitchen and dining area will inspire you to rustle up delicious meals, which can be enjoyed at the huge dining table. 

The garden has a barbecue and seating area, where you can dine alfresco on warm summer evenings, or start your day sipping your coffee while you enjoy the gorgeous views across the marshes. 

For those who feel the call of the water, Orford Quay with its launch ramp and boat trips is just a couple of hundred metres away from the house. There are also picturesque walks to be had, with the Rendlesham forest nearby, and the charming beach town of Aldeburgh is just a short drive away too. 

Come bedtime, climb into one of the splendid four-poster beds for a blissful night’s sleep under the Tudor roof.

We're pretty sure this home is bigger on the inside somehow. With bags of space and a cutting-edge, modern gleam to everything, it's actually a recently renovated 19th-Century cottage. Its charming exterior has been spiced up with new black windows and there's a striking barn-style extension to the rear, where you'll find the bedrooms. 

A vast room with an open layout is the star of the show. So big it takes up almost the whole of the original cottage, it's a mix of contemporary cool and comfy, practical furnishings. We particularly love the three sociable sofas facing each other and the breakfast bar in the well-equipped kitchen. Set on a quiet country lane, you'll have a fenced front garden with picnic benches and a private deck at the back of the house with garden furniture.

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.

This is, however, a part of the country where you'll want to spend as much time outside as possible and there are plenty of opportunities to do so here. As well as a patio with seating and a barbecue, there's also a private tennis court nearby that guests are free to make the most of. It's also possible to hire a bike from the host and Sudbourne Woods Bike Park only take two minutes of pedalling to reach. For those more comfortable on their feet, Orford Ness National Nature Reserve can be reached in eight minutes in the car.
