This Suffolk country home is a real feast for the senses. There are a whole host of features that you would expect to see in a rural property — for instance, the wooden ceiling beams, flagstone flooring, and antique beds. However, there are also lots that you wouldn't, like the eclectic art collection, the bright colour palette, and even an enviable amount of lego figurines. Though the inside is quirky as can be, the real fun starts when you head outside. On the patio, guests will find a barbecue, plenty of seating and a hot tub — that's summer evenings sorted, then. Venture further into the grounds and you'll come across a children's play area and a replica space rocket installation. The nearest village with a pub — Westhall — is less than twenty minutes' walk away, while the seaside town of Southwold can be reached in a similar amount of time in the car. However, if you just fancy staying in, the host can arrange for a private chef, masseuse or nail therapist to pay a visit to the house.

Pull on your walking boots and ramble along the bucolic lanes that unfurl from your doorstep or jump in the car and make haste to the coast – Southwold Beach is only a fifteen-minute drive away.

Appearing in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and home to a 12th-century church tower, the village of Bramfield is steeped in history. This Regency house is no exception, with low beams, sumptuous beds and a crackling log-burner all adding to that sense of tradition. 

There's plenty of space for the whole family, both inside and out. On rainy days, board games, a DVD player, a Wii, a cosy reading snug and a playroom will fend off the boredom, while summer afternoons call for letting loose in the garden. While little ones bounce on the trampoline, parents can relax under the ivy-covered terrace with a glass of wine or bubble in the hot tub as the day fades away. Come dinnertime, whip up a feast in the kitchen or grill up a storm on the charcoal barbecue. And after a long day, nothing feels better than a soak in one of the two lush bathtubs – pure bliss, in our opinion.

Bramfield village is a five-minute walk away – aside from its historical attractions, it also has a lovely pub ideal for a bite to eat at lunch or a restorative mid-walk pint. On sunny days visit Southwold, a thirty-minute drive away, for fish and chips on the shingle beach.

Nestled in a farmyard in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, this property offers the perfect place to rest, recharge and forget the stresses of daily life. With peace and quiet at your fingertips, getting some much-needed rest comes easy here. From the cosy country-style interiors and original features such as exposed timber beams, narrow staircases and traditional flooring – the cottage is brimming with charm. 

We particularly love the contemporary kitchen which opens out via bi-fold doors onto the enclosed herb garden. Outside, you'll also find a patio terrace with outdoor seating and a large swimming pool to enjoy during the summer months. 

At the heart of the home, the living room features a log burner fireplace to curl up around after taking scenic strolls along the Suffolk coastline. There is also a snuggly study room which comes in handy for those who need to work from home during their stay. 

Just a short drive or cycle to the local pub, the Queen’s Head, and nearby Halesworth – enjoy the charming locale with this gorgeous setting as your base.

One thing that really stands out is the superbly sociable space offered by the open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area: three distinct spaces stitched together so the whole group can feel connected whilst having the flexibility to do your own thing. The chefs among your party will certainly appreciate this architectural quirk. Another large living room, complete with a wood-burning stove and French windows, offers a change of tone, perfect for an after-dinner game of charades or a quiet nightcap before retiring to the comfort of your rooms.

You’ll be staying in the hamlet of Ilketshall St Margaret, just south of the picturesque market town of Bungay. Here you’ll find plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, and you can get there in just ten minutes by car (the barn has plenty of parking) or half an hour by bicycle. After all, you’ll also be surrounded by a warren of National Cycle Routes, guaranteed to keep any keen cyclists busy. Elsewhere, Lowestoft and its beach are a half an hour drive and the medieval city of Norwich is forty minutes away by car. 


Midnight Tower

Found among peaceful Suffolk woodland and surrounded by fragrant lavender plants, this traditional cottage recently underwent a complete renovation. Lots of original features were retained — such as the exposed brickwork and the inglenook fireplace in which a log burner sits for those chilly nights — but the rest was spruced up to the high standards demanded by twenty-first-century travellers. The palette of muted greys and recessed ceiling spotlights feels particularly en vogue, while the private garden with its neat plant beds and alfresco seating on the patio really makes the most of the space. You’ll find a farm shop a half-hour walk away in the nearby village of Wangford, but if you don’t fancy cooking, there’s also a gastropub ten minutes away on foot, too. In terms of days out, you really are spoilt for choice. The seaside town of Southwold takes less than a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while RPSB Minsmere can be reached in just under twenty-five minutes.

The surrounding coastline and local countryside provide ample opportunity for beautiful scenic walks and outdoor pursuits. 

Sense & Sensibility

Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

Head out to explore Yoxford high street, with a wonderful combination of historical architecture, ranging between the fourteenth century and the twentieth century. You'll find a fantastic choice of antique shops as well as bookstores that sell secondhand novels, followed by an hour spent at one of the charming cafes.

Pack your bucket and spade and spend the day on the sand, paddling in the sea, or exploring the pier. 

When everyone is sun-kissed, sandy and sleepy, head back to the apartment for a quiet night in. Set the little ones up in the snug watching movies while you open a bottle of wine and relax in the living room. 

In the morning, go for a peaceful stroll along the beachside promenade. The apartment is the perfect coastal hideaway, with easy access to the beach and pier, as well as the heathlands of this part of Suffolk. You’ll want to return time and again.

Nestled in the Southwold South Green area, you're only a three-minute walk from the sprawling beach, where dips in the North Sea and sunbathing on the shore are a given. After a stroll along the seafront promenade, pick up supplies from independent butchers, delis and bakeries on the high street – just a short stroll away – followed by a tasting tour at Adnams Brewery, five minutes on foot.

We love noisy dinners in the separate dining room, but if the pub is on the cards, classic boozer Anchor is stumbling distance from the home.

Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character. Further delights can be found outside. From one of the bedrooms, there’s a cute paved courtyard with a dining set (the perfect spot for sipping Earl Grey in the morning). On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).
