We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

Later, relax in the enclosed outdoor courtyard, back at this lovely home. We love the pretty shutters and the shelves full of books here. For the autumn and winter months there are three wood-burning stoves, while two separate reception rooms with sofas and TVs will ensure there’s no squabbling over what movie to watch. It’s a great spot for a family party or festive trip, especially for those who love to cook thanks to its Rangemaster with two ovens. So, why not cook up a feast with some local Suffolk produce for your loved ones.

The coastal village of Southwold, like most English seaside towns, has a splendid mix of quaint shops, rustic pubs, and chippies. A twelve-minute walk from its traditional pier, and fourteen from the boating lake, this cottage is a perfect base for exploring the local delights. As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

Enjoy breakfast perched up at the modern kitchen island, before heading out to explore the town and beach. Both children and adults will enjoy the Victorian Pier, complete with a unique array of artist-made arcade games and simulator rides at the Under The Pier Show. Grab an ice cream and spend the day on the sand – we recommend walking to the southern end of the beach, where the quiet dunes provide wonderful picnicking spots. Or, head back home to your own picnicking spot in the shared garden where lavender blooms in wooden planters and a bistro set is ready for you in the sun.

Set just a few minutes’ walk from the beach in Southwold, this gorgeous home is a welcoming base for a family or group of friends looking to explore the beautiful Suffollk coastline. Whitewashed walls and soft coastal tones offer the feel of a calming seaside retreat while large skylights and floor-to-ceiling doors opening up to the garden let an abundance of light into the open-plan living and dining area. Contemporary furnishings with a nod to quintessential English style make each room warm and inviting and plenty of storage provides extra convenience for long stays. There’s plenty to see and do within a short walk or drive from the home including a weekly market, great local pubs, boutiques and fish and chip shops and fun day trips can be spent roaming through the nearby Suffolk Coast and Heath AONB, hopping on the foot ferry to the dunes at Walberswick, venturing further inland for a hike or exploring the diverse surroundings on one of the many cycling paths.

Whisk the family away to this seafront abode, just a short walk from Southwold beach. The sea views are really the highlight here, whether that’s from the bedrooms or the sunny front terrace. There’s only a small courtyard at the rear of the house, so it might not be the best choice for groups that value a large garden for the kids to play in. However, the front garden’s views of Southwold Pier make up for it. The recently renovated home is sleek and luxurious, although we think it might be cramped for all fourteen guests. There are two living areas, though, and four of the six bedrooms are ensuite for comfort. The dining room fits all fourteen guests, too. Don’t fancy cooking? You can take the short 200-yard walk to the pub for dinner.

A Ship of Good Chance

Southwold is home to many classic English seaside sights. You’ll find a pier, fish and chips, pubs, and even a quaint boating lake. But despite such traditional surroundings, this home defies all expectations of a coastal cottage. A nine-minute walk from the breezy pier, you’ll love coming back here to warm up after a windswept afternoon. This modern and unique building was a former smokehouse, still retaining original exterior features and plenty of character inside. The living space has a striking exposed brick wall, going all the way up to the arch of the vaulted ceiling. With bi-folding glass doors leading out to a courtyard, it’s up to you whether you’d like to dine indoors, or alfresco on the paving stones. Or maybe you’ll need to let the English weather decide. Either way, the glossy, white kitchen is incredibly modern, nothing like the rustic image you might have in mind. Upstairs, the master bedroom offers yet another expectation-defying feature – more bi-folding doors with a private balcony and glass balustrade. Look out over the red tiled rooftops at sunset and clink your champagne flutes as you say cheers to the holiday.

It blends antique and shabby chic furniture to create a welcoming vibe – recline on the plush white sofas in the living area, fix up breakfast to enjoy at the classic round dining table and sleep in cosy bedrooms full of books and charm. While the shared outdoor courtyard is the spot for morning coffees or afternoon drinks, the downstairs’ table tennis set up is the after-dinner spot. But best of all, you’ll be excellently located in Southwold on the Suffolk coast. The beach is an eight-minute walk away, where you can paddle in the sea or stroll along the pier. The shops and pubs in town are even closer, with a deli, wine shop and butchers all within a five-minute walk. Regardless of whether you prefer land or sea activities, you couldn’t be better placed.

If it's proximity to the beach you're after, you're not going to get much better than this apartment. It takes all of a minute to walk to reach the sands of Southwold Beach, famous for its pastel-coloured huts and pier. You can get a sense of this coastal location without even leaving the flat. Simply step out onto the balcony and gaze out over the rooftops to see the town's lighthouse standing proud. There's seating out here and as is often the case with the seaside, watching the sky change colour at the end of the day can be particularly dramatic. Back inside, the home benefits from high ceilings, a period fireplace and a big bay window in the master bedroom, but a recent renovation has modernised the space in unshowy fashion — we're fans of the soothing colour scheme, the smart tiling in the bathrooms and the pair of pared-back chandeliers in the main living area. Simple, but effective.

This pretty apartment is the perfect base for a seaside stay in Southwold. It’s a ground-floor home in a prime location – just a five-minute walk to the pier and beach, and ten minutes to the High Street. Soak up the atmosphere of this lovely seaside town by day, and relax in this cosy home from home in the evenings. 

The sun streams through the large bay windows, making the apartment bright and airy. There’s a soft colour palette of calming shades, with a nod to the seaside setting here and there. Before you head out for the day, make yourself a cappuccino – the fully kitted-out kitchen here even has a milk frother.

Southwold town and its sandy beaches are just a two-minute walk away, so you'll have the coast to explore and the sea right on your doorstep. On sunny days, head to the historic pier and crazy golf course, and cool off at Adnams Brewery, an eight-minute stroll away with a tour and tastings (a siesta back in the home is highly recommended after this). You can also explore this region of Suffolk by boat - hop on the ferry to pretty Walberswick village – a fifteen-minute drive away, or hire a boat and take in that salty sea air.

Through the bifold doors in the bright kitchen diner, a private paved garden awaits – it was our favourite place to spend mornings with a coffee and evenings with a glass of wine. 

When it’s time to explore your surroundings, walk just 200 feet to the High Street for an array of cafes, shops and pubs. Treat yourself to an ice cream then wander along the promenade for ten minutes until you reach Southwold Pier. If you’d like to really give your legs a stretch, set out on the 6 mile Southwold to Walberswick circular walk.

This former fisherman’s cottage on the Suffolk heritage coast is an absolute winner. Stuffed to the rafters with character, this charming home – extended so as to provide a spacious, open-plan kitchen-dining area – is all about the period features.
