And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. The coastal village of Southwold, like most English seaside towns, has a splendid mix of quaint shops, rustic pubs, and chippies. A twelve-minute walk from its traditional pier, and fourteen from the boating lake, this cottage is a perfect base for exploring the local delights. As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

Whisk the family away to this seafront abode, just a short walk from Southwold beach. The sea views are really the highlight here, whether that’s from the bedrooms or the sunny front terrace. There’s only a small courtyard at the rear of the house, so it might not be the best choice for groups that value a large garden for the kids to play in. However, the front garden’s views of Southwold Pier make up for it. The recently renovated home is sleek and luxurious, although we think it might be cramped for all fourteen guests. There are two living areas, though, and four of the six bedrooms are ensuite for comfort. The dining room fits all fourteen guests, too. Don’t fancy cooking? You can take the short 200-yard walk to the pub for dinner.

A Ship of Good Chance

Positioned at the bottom of Skillman’s Hill, this contemporary cottage is no more than a fifteen-minute stroll from the sand and shingle beach at Southwold Pier. Expect unfussy interiors, with open-concept communal spaces to make entertaining a breeze. But as evening rolls in, close the bifold doors in the living area to create two cosy sitting rooms. The heart of this home is most certainly the kitchen. Keep wine glasses topped up as your brood eagerly awaits dinner on the comfortable couches. The Falcon cooker is sure to impress the most discerning chef, while the toasty underfloor heating is a treat for chilly feet after paddling in the North Sea. For afternoon tea or hearty lunchtime fare, you’ll find cafes and pubs reached in just five minutes by foot.

The ironic thing about trying to choose somewhere to stay in a location like Southwold is the strong likelihood that you'll be spending the bulk of your time outside exploring the natural riches of the Suffolk coastline. However, this marvellous address offers plenty of incentives to hunker down at home.

When the weather's on your side, you'll want to make full use of the charming outdoor space, which has its alfresco dining table and barbecue for outdoor banquets, as well as the summer house complete with a games room to keep youngsters – as well as not-so-youngsters – entertained.

There's plenty to like in the main house, too. The large glass doors and windows flood the interior with natural light and this dances pleasingly off the smart parquet flooring. We like that the design is pared-back but doesn't look neglected in any way – in fact, the white walls, sleek kitchen surfaces and equally glossy bathrooms all score high on the style stakes.

As mentioned at the start, there's a wealth of spots to explore in the local area. First and foremost is Southwold Beach and Pier, which both take under ten minutes to reach on foot. There are nature reserves and walking routes to discover in the surrounding Suffolk Coasts & Heath AONB, as well as the Southwold Maize Maze only five minutes' drive away.

Sunday Best

Sitting next to the pretty village green, this second-floor apartment in Southwold is an excellent choice for exploring the many delights this area has to offer. The home enjoys a unique view over red-brick rooftops towards the old lighthouse – this impressive structure landmarks the promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront and admire rows of colourful beach huts. 

At home, the tasteful interior echoes its coastal location with inviting shades of blue and grey, while the open-plan living space offers the perfect spot to gather and unwind after activity-filled days. Spend some time exploring the postcard-perfect town with its rich list of independent shops, seafood restaurants and traditional pubs. On sunny days, kids will love playing on the shingle and sand beach, and if you’re brave enough, a dip in the North Sea is sure to energise and lift your spirits. 

The home’s modern kitchen is well-equipped for whipping up some fresh finds from the local weekly market, however with the Adnams Brewery and fish and chip shops aplenty within a five-minute walk, you may spend more time out than in.

When you take your eyes off the page, you’ll be very conveniently located in the middle of Southwold, less than a five-minute walk from bakeries, pubs and shops, not to mention the lovely stretch of beach. Sunbathe on the golden sands or take long meandering walks along the coast – when you’re this close to the ocean, part of the day is spent just feeling lucky.

It’s a ground-floor home in a prime location – just a five-minute walk to the pier and beach, and ten minutes to the High Street. Soak up the atmosphere of this lovely seaside town by day, and relax in this cosy home from home in the evenings. 

The sun streams through the large bay windows, making the apartment bright and airy. There’s a soft colour palette of calming shades, with a nod to the seaside setting here and there. Before you head out for the day, make yourself a cappuccino – the fully kitted-out kitchen here even has a milk frother. 

Spend your day sunbathing on the beach, indulging in the nostalgia of Southwold’s iconic pier, and promenading past painted beach huts and colourful flowerbeds before strolling home for supper. Perhaps you’ll pick up fish and chips to tuck into once you’re home.

Both children and adults will enjoy the Victorian Pier, complete with a unique array of artist-made arcade games and simulator rides at the Under The Pier Show. Grab an ice cream and spend the day on the sand – we recommend walking to the southern end of the beach, where the quiet dunes provide wonderful picnicking spots. Or, head back home to your own picnicking spot in the shared garden where lavender blooms in wooden planters and a bistro set is ready for you in the sun.

North Sea Waves

Situated in the heart of the genteel seaside town of Southwold, this cosy nautical-inspired bolthole is perfect for those who want some rest and rejuvenation on the Suffolk coast. Inside, a soothing white and pale blue colour scheme complements sumptuous furnishings to create a relaxing home from home. Through the bifold doors in the bright kitchen diner, a private paved garden awaits – it was our favourite place to spend mornings with a coffee and evenings with a glass of wine. 

When it’s time to explore your surroundings, walk just 200 feet to the High Street for an array of cafes, shops and pubs. Treat yourself to an ice cream then wander along the promenade for ten minutes until you reach Southwold Pier. If you’d like to really give your legs a stretch, set out on the 6 mile Southwold to Walberswick circular walk.
