Twenty minutes on foot from the pristine sands of Walberswick Beach, this cottage-like home sits proudly at the end of a quaint row of village houses. Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character. On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

We love the roomy sage-coloured kitchen, ideal for preparing home-cooked meals for the whole family to enjoy at the large wooden table. Then let the kids run around the grassy lawn, or settle in the bright living area with your holiday reads and a board game. Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

For the autumn and winter months there are three wood-burning stoves, while two separate reception rooms with sofas and TVs will ensure there’s no squabbling over what movie to watch. It’s a great spot for a family party or festive trip, especially for those who love to cook thanks to its Rangemaster with two ovens. So, why not cook up a feast with some local Suffolk produce for your loved ones.

Mine's A Triple Scoop

Southwold is home to many classic English seaside sights. You’ll find a pier, fish and chips, pubs, and even a quaint boating lake. But despite such traditional surroundings, this home defies all expectations of a coastal cottage. A nine-minute walk from the breezy pier, you’ll love coming back here to warm up after a windswept afternoon. This modern and unique building was a former smokehouse, still retaining original exterior features and plenty of character inside. The living space has a striking exposed brick wall, going all the way up to the arch of the vaulted ceiling. With bi-folding glass doors leading out to a courtyard, it’s up to you whether you’d like to dine indoors, or alfresco on the paving stones. Or maybe you’ll need to let the English weather decide. Either way, the glossy, white kitchen is incredibly modern, nothing like the rustic image you might have in mind. Upstairs, the master bedroom offers yet another expectation-defying feature – more bi-folding doors with a private balcony and glass balustrade. Look out over the red tiled rooftops at sunset and clink your champagne flutes as you say cheers to the holiday.

Sat next door to each other in a quiet corner of Southwold, the pair of properties offers guests a bit of flexibility when it comes to sleeping arrangements and privacy. Upstairs, the cosy bedrooms, two of which are king-sized, are perfect for crashing out after a day spent walking the nearby nature reserves. Southwold village is less than five minutes away on foot – here you can peer into independent boutiques, stock up at the deli or indulge your inner beer connoisseur at Adnams Brewery. On sunny days, nab a perch on Southwold beach and wander over to the iconic pier. The neighbouring villages and towns are also excellent day trips – Walberswick to the south is excellent for fish and chips while further down, Thorpeness has a Peter Pan-inspired boating lake.

If it's proximity to the beach you're after, you're not going to get much better than this apartment. It takes all of a minute to walk to reach the sands of Southwold Beach, famous for its pastel-coloured huts and pier. You can get a sense of this coastal location without even leaving the flat. Simply step out onto the balcony and gaze out over the rooftops to see the town's lighthouse standing proud. There's seating out here and as is often the case with the seaside, watching the sky change colour at the end of the day can be particularly dramatic. Back inside, the home benefits from high ceilings, a period fireplace and a big bay window in the master bedroom, but a recent renovation has modernised the space in unshowy fashion — we're fans of the soothing colour scheme, the smart tiling in the bathrooms and the pair of pared-back chandeliers in the main living area. Whisk the family away to this seafront abode, just a short walk from Southwold beach. The sea views are really the highlight here, whether that’s from the bedrooms or the sunny front terrace. There’s only a small courtyard at the rear of the house, so it might not be the best choice for groups that value a large garden for the kids to play in. However, the front garden’s views of Southwold Pier make up for it. The recently renovated home is sleek and luxurious, although we think it might be cramped for all fourteen guests. There are two living areas, though, and four of the six bedrooms are ensuite for comfort. The dining room fits all fourteen guests, too. Don’t fancy cooking? You can take the short 200-yard walk to the pub for dinner.

Set just a few minutes’ walk from the beach in Southwold, this gorgeous home is a welcoming base for a family or group of friends looking to explore the beautiful Suffollk coastline. Gather the group together for a special seaside holiday – this home can comfortably accommodate the extended family or a large group of friends. It’s positioned right next to the ocean, views of which you can enjoy from many of the home’s windows or from the beautifully landscaped gardens. Fire up the barbecue for lazy alfresco lunches, or prepare feasts in the well-equipped kitchen to enjoy in the grand dining hall complete with ocean views. The bedrooms are all equally bright and comfortable, but we have a certain soft spot for the upstairs library. With dozens of books to choose from and a home full of ocean-view window seats, both the casual reader and serious bookworm will be utterly delighted. When you take your eyes off the page, you’ll be very conveniently located in the middle of Southwold, less than a five-minute walk from bakeries, pubs and shops, not to mention the lovely stretch of beach. Sunbathe on the golden sands or take long meandering walks along the coast – when you’re this close to the ocean, part of the day is spent just feeling lucky.

It’s not often you get the grandeur of a country manor in a central location like this.
