We think this cute home on the south Devon coastline has the rustic cosiness of a beach hut, but with all the modern finesse demanded by today's holidaymakers. Inside, original wood flooring and the brick fireplace housing a wood-burner are particularly handsome features, but the real star of the show is the view of Brixham Harbour from the large windows in both the living room and bedrooms — pack your binoculars and you can watch fishing boats coming in and out of the bay. Around the other side of the home, there's a stone-walled back garden complete with a patio, alfresco seating area and a barbecue. We can totally understand if you're not in the mood to cook at any point and the nearby town of Brixham — only ten minutes or so away on foot — has plenty of seafood restaurants, as well as fish and chips shops and cosy pubs. In the other direction, Fishcombe Cove and Battery Gardens can be reached in the same amount of time, too.

With lovely views of Fishcombe Cove, this home has direct access to the sea at the secluded beach below. On-site, you're welcome to use the communal heated swimming pool in the summertime, but the private balcony gives you somewhere to relax outdoors all year round. What's more, the twin beds can zip into a super king to suit little ones or a couple. It's a fifteen-minute stroll into Brixham Harbour, where independent shops and eateries await. Ramblers will love having the South West Coastal Path on their doorstep, too.

Arranged over two floors, the property's three bedrooms are located on the lower floor and have calming neutral decor, comfortable mattresses and bird's eye harbour views from the two adult rooms. The standout space is the open-plan upper floor with its bespoke kitchen, sociable dining area and inviting living space – it's an ideal spot to spend time together as a family. Huge sliding doors lead onto a furnished balcony with stunning views to accompany your morning coffee or evening sundowner session. The town tumbles down the hillside towards the horseshoe-shaped bay, where you'll find a variety of wonderful brunch spots and restaurants – many of them serving the catch of the day – within a ten-minute walk. Local standouts include The Curious Kitchen, Rockfish and Albero. You're within a fifteen-minute drive from some of Torbay's finest beaches. However, our personal choice would be to escape the crowds and walk twenty minutes to the secluded shingle beach at Fishcombe Cove – it's a local favourite for a reason.

Roll the Old Chariot

A short stroll from Brixham’s town centre and harbour, this home has comfort and convenience at its core. Though there are three floors of house, it’s not the largest space, but it’ll suit those seeking a fuss-free base. That said, with restaurants, shops and beaches nearby, much time will be spent exploring the local area anyway. Unfussy bedrooms mean a peaceful night’s sleep, and while there isn’t an outdoor space here, Churston Cove and Shoalstone Seawater Pool are easily reached by car – or foot if you’re happy to walk twenty minutes.

This smart Devon home is ideal for groups planning a trip to the seaside. Located in the town of Brixham, just a couple of streets away from the water, it's a fabulous place to begin your adventures. 

You'll love the charming nods to the coastal location dotted throughout the house – spot the rope lamp, whale sculpture, and plenty of maritime-themed artworks. The bright and airy kitchen is perfect for whipping up some delicious dishes using fresh, local ingredients. Serve up your culinary creations at the long dining bench, or head outside for an alfresco feast on the patio. And, when you need a little peace and quiet, you can settle into the sunroom with a good book and a cup of tea – bliss. 

A ten-minute stroll will bring you down to the Brixham Harbour, where you can watch the boats bobbing in the water. Wander further along the waterfront, and you'll find a saltwater swimming pool and Berry Head fishing point. And, as this is the English Riviera, there are plenty of excellent beaches to discover nearby – we recommend the long sandy shoreline of Broadsands Beach, a twelve-minute drive away.

It's impossible to miss the eye-catching, triangular building that houses this seaside home. The dark blue structure boasts one of the best views over the bay, and its unique design is one of our favourites in town. Split between two bright bedrooms and an open-plan living room that extends to the balcony, this home is an excellent option for a first visit to Devon. When you're ready to head out, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of things on offer in  Brixham – including beautiful art galleries, fantastic restaurants, great bars, and plenty of water-based activities. Wake up early and head down to the world-famous Brixham Fish Market for fresh fish landed just twenty metres away. If you want to get away from it all, walk along the coast to the shingle beach at Fishcombe Cove or take the car along the coast to find a secluded stretch of sand. Alternatively, head to the colourful village of Kingswear – a fifteen-minute drive away – before boarding the ferry over to picturesque Dartmouth. After a day out exploring, head home for that sumptuous fish supper and watch a movie by the fire. Finally, drift off in the comfortable and quiet bedrooms, ensuring a great night's sleep to prepare you for another day of holiday joy.

If you looked around this home without knowing anything about the local area, we think you'd still probably be able to guess that it's located somewhere close to the coast. What gives it away? Perhaps the whitewashed beach-hut aesthetic or the array of nautical artwork, including a glass cabinet full of conch shells in the bedroom.

The standard of design throughout is pleasingly high, from the pristinely subway-tiled kitchen to the equally spotless bathroom. With this level of modernity, it might surprise you to learn that the cottage is in fact Grade-II listed, one of a large number of buildings in Brixham.

It's easy to see more of these from the home's central location in the sleepy Devon fishing village, especially as you make the five-minute walk down to the harbour. If the weather's looking particularly fine, a day at the seaside can be had at Churston Cove or St Mary's Bay, reached in twenty and thirty minutes on foot respectively.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. Your little ones hopefully won’t object to bedtime with the twin rooms one of which is Star Wars-themed and the other which features a dollhouse mounted on the wall and a whimsical fairy wall hanging to decorate. We can’t promise they’ll want to stop playing and go to sleep though.

Step inside this recently modernised Victorian home that's set on one of Kingswear’s most sought-after roads, in the very heart of the village and almost touching the water. With its glass-front, the recent remodel maximises the wonderful views of the River Dart and offers splendid visions all the way out to sea. The open-plan concept and seamless transition of indoor to outdoor living creates a comfortable and luxurious space for those that need a few days of solid rest and recuperation. There's a dash of retro here, with a 1950s inspired long table, and bright and bold colours in the bedrooms. Enjoy a soak in the freestanding tub, feel your toes get toasty in front of the fire, and, as always, be sure to explore your beautiful surroundings. In our opinion, this home is a beautiful landmark of the Devon coastline, away from the busy tourist-heavy beaches – it's the idyllic summer getaway.

Dramatic views and stylish interiors are the names of the game at this home overlooking the coastline between Paignton and Brixham. A big, bright family home with a rear garden that drops away, it offers up staggering vistas, with big windows and a huge terrace built to make the most of it. Period touches like parquet floors, fireplaces and bay windows nod back to the 1930s, while luxurious, modern furnishings bring everything right up to date.

Perfect for families, there's a great deal of space to spread out in, with an open layout to the fully equipped kitchen and dining space – with one of the best views in the house. Elsewhere, a cosy living room boasts velvet sofas, a log burner and sliding doors to the terrace, while a second sitting room doubles as an extra bedroom, with a wheelchair-accessible ground-floor bedroom off it.

Upstairs, the main bedroom is a lesson in elegant styling, and we love not only its far-reaching views across the hills but also its stunning en-suite – the freestanding tub is such a treat. And we'd have been quite content if it stopped there, but this home also comes with a slight surprise – underneath the rear terrace, you'll find a bonus room used as a gym, with a treadmill, bike machine and weights.

Enjoy all your meals on the sunny terrace during the summer months, gaze out across the sea and even watch the steam trains go about their business at the local heritage railway. It's just a walk or a short drive to Broadsands Beach, and you can choose between heading out for a day at Paignton Zoo, visiting Brixham Harbour or even grabbing your clubs for a game of golf nearby – it's all within easy striking distance.



In Perspective

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.


The Straight and Narrow

With spectacular River Dart views, this charming family home is just the place for those after a coastal escape to South Devon. Wake up to breakfast on the sun-soaked deck with sweeping views across the harbour, over the River Dart and out to Dartmouth. The Atlantic beckons beyond, and with easy access to the secluded coves, expansive sand and shingle beaches flanked by striking cliffs, it’ll be effortless to make the most of your location.

When you’re not out exploring the seafront shops and teahouses in Dartmouth (a quick ferry ride away), or walking the cliff-grazing trails along the South West Coastal Path, spend sunny afternoons in one of the elegant waterfront pubs, watching the boats float up and down the river. Enjoy long balmy evenings with a barbecued seafood feast on the patio, with today’s catch you picked up from the local fishmonger, and soak up the last of the lingering light. As dusk descends, the cosy lounge, with its plush sofas and crackling fire, will be everyone’s first port of call for movie nights come nightfall.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

You may want to delicately broach the discussion of which family members to invite here, because the trip will be legendary. Located on the River Dart, this sprawling three-level property accommodates a party of 12. You will have the whole house to yourselves, so act like you own the place. Beyond the plethora of views, there are plenty of seafaring activities to partake in. Cruise the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer, go paddleboarding, rent a boat, or just utilize your direct access to the water. On land: picnic, visit nearby castles, museums, the Greenway House (once home to Agatha Christie), or catch the ferry to the historic maritime town of Dartmouth, which is within walking distance. With six bedrooms and plenty of square footage, everyone will have a chance to stretch out and enjoy alone time. The lucky occupants of two bedrooms on the mid level will have direct access to the balcony terrace. When it’s time to gather for conversation or a meal, there are so many options; from tons of communal space to the remarkable outdoor dining setup. This classic seaside structure is pompous in a good way.

With its sumptuous interiors and privileged position in the heart of Dartmouth, this home is a great base for exploring one of South Devon’s most enchanting towns and its surrounding countryside. Inside, a cosy seating area unfolds into a modern kitchen – we loved the glass ceiling and creamy neutral colour scheme. Head upstairs for quiet bedrooms which guarantee a peaceful night's sleep.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.

If you're anything like us, you'll want to spend every spare moment in the courtyard garden, watching the boats float by. Summer mornings call for coffee and alfresco breakfasts, while evenings are the perfect excuse to pour yourself a glass of wine and admire the South Devon sunsets.

Inside, you can't help but swoon over the comfortable and chic spaces. Unwind with a good book in the window seat, or throw a log on the wood-burner and snuggle up on the leather sofa for a Netflix movie night. For dinner, rustle up something tasty in the kitchen – this area is home to some of the country's best seafood – or head down to the local pub, just one minute away, when you don't fancy cooking.

Speaking of location, you've got the Dart Valley at your fingertips. You're just a stone's throw from the quayside, where you can hop on a ferry to Dartmouth and Greenway. Craving sand and sun? Drive twenty minutes to Blackpool Sands and while away the afternoon by the sea.

Located in the village of Kingswear – just across the River Dart from Dartmouth – this beautiful reverse level home offers breathtaking views of the river and Dartmouth from every angle. 
Laid out over two floors, there’s plenty of space for relaxed socialising as well as room to enjoy quiet moments alone while feasting on splendid natural vistas. 
Upstairs, the living room invites you to kick back on its sofa or armchairs with a glass of wine while enjoying the fresh breeze coming off of Waterhead Creek through the open glass doors. In the evenings, there’s an electric fireplace here too for added ambience, while the dining room invites celebratory feasts aplenty while gazing out over the ships sailing in and out of Dartmouth Harbour. 
For the best views of all, however, step out onto the private terrace where an outdoor table beckons sunny alfresco breakfasts and evening drinks on the sofa as the sun sets over the river.
There’s access to this privileged spot from the second bedroom too, while the main bedroom boasts a beautiful Juliet balcony. 
Outside of your home, the Dartmouth Steam Railway is a seven-minute walk away, Man Sands beach is a thirteen-minute drive and Dartmouth is easily reached by ferry, a nine-minute stroll from your door.

Upon the English Riviera, staying in the warm climate of the sophisticated town of Torquay feels like the equivalent of Cannes. Hop off a yacht at Torquay Marina and take an eighteen-minute stroll to this fabulous apartment, fit for any VIP. Upon arrival, your host will have a bottle of wine waiting for you. Before you even start exploring this modern flat, pour yourself a glass and say cheers to the start of the holiday. Do you like a home with a view? Because this one offers several. From its many large windows, you can spot the bay, beaches, harbours, the marina, and of course the big blue sea itself. On a sunny day, we recommend taking a bowl of olives and a chilled prosecco out to the private balcony – pop up the parasol if it gets too hot. Indoors, pristine white and cream interiors make the space feel fresh, with a mint-green sofa which you can sink into after a long day of beachside activities. South Devon might feel distinctly Mediterranean, but you’ll certainly enjoy ending the day with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey.

Despite its small size, this studio apartment's proximity to Paignton's seafront gets full marks from us. The water is so close, you could practically reach out and touch it from the living area, making it the perfect spot to enjoy some sand, surf and Devon sunshine. 

We love how the coastal scenery is reflected in the sleek and stylish design. Yellow chairs invite you to kick back and relax with a glass of wine, admiring the views framed in the full-height windows. The compact but well-stocked kitchen is ideal for romantic dinners at home, while the lush rainfall shower is just the ticket after a balmy day by the sea. 

Of course, days here are best spent wandering along the traditional pier, snacking on fish and chips at Goodrington Sands and dipping your toes in Tor Bay. The beach is a mere 100 metres away, but if you're keen on exploring a bit further, you'll find the South West Coast Path, Torquay and Exeter are just a short journey by car.

Balmy & Clear

Tucked behind Market Square, this pet-friendly home puts Dartmouth's loveliest shops and bars just a stone's throw away. You'll have to be able to climb a steep staircase to reach the entrance, then cross over the stylish front deck for outdoor hangouts. Once you're settled in, the whole family will love snuggling up in a firelit living space. While you'll receive a handy parking permit, those seeking guaranteed spots and easy drives should consider the town's summertime busyness and annual regatta.

There are plenty of activities for all ages on your doorstep. For a Devonshire classic, head to the banks of the river for a spot of crabbing, and then grab fish and chips from the award-winning local chippy a nine-minute walk from the house. When the sun shines, Devon’s beaches could be Mediterranean. The wide expanses of Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes by car, where you can enjoy a day of splashing in the sea and building sandcastles. There are many boat and ferry trips up the River Dart – your hosts are happy to recommend you some excellent day trips as well as tips on the best walks and other excursions. Dartmouth is a twelve-minute walk away, where you’ll find top seafood restaurants and laid-back country pubs.

Having been renovated in 2022, the design brings together boldly patterned wallpaper, a smattering of antique furnishings, some well-chosen pieces of artwork and tufted furnishings to create an interior that feels traditional but far from stale. It must be said that the standout features are found in the garden, which is filled with flowers during the warmer months. As well as offering plenty of seating out on the terrace, there's also a hot tub in which you can pass summer evenings.

If the weather gods are smiling down upon you during your stay, the shingle beach at Anstey's Cove can be reached in under fifteen minutes, while Babbacombe Beach takes ten minutes more than that. The Kent Cavern caves are only eight minutes away on foot, too.

This modern apartment is part of a local landmark – an old industrial building that's been used as everything from a pottery to a brewery. Now split into a handful of stylish apartments, it's a striking building close to the river and just a short way from the centre of Dartmouth.
