Nestled into the rolling hills of the South Downs by Amberly Wild Brooks, this home blends rustic living with an incredible range of modern luxuries to create a unique space that inspires you to slow down and spend time with your loved ones. Head out to the hills to explore the impressive sceneries (host Jemma also offers bike rentals), then come home and soothe your aching muscles in the wood-burning hot tub. Jemma also offers a menu of wellness retreat packages at an extra cost (think along the lines of yoga and pilates classes, sound baths and meditation instructors). And if you want to learn a new skill, you can also book vegan and raw food cookery courses – there are even creative tutorials in things like art and photography. Close to the picturesque South Downs National Park, this home is on the ground floor of a cottage, nestled in the far-reaching grounds of the owner's estate. You'll find a lot of artwork and antiques here, so it might not be the best place for small children. You're in for a countryside treat, though – the views are wonderful, walking trails are nearby, and the garden faces west meaning the sunsets are truly awe-inspiring. You'll receive fresh eggs from the owner's chickens upon arrival, and you might be paid a visit by the resident Jack Russell terrier during your stay. Occupying the top two floors of this former Victorian photographer's studio is a light-filled, contemporary space that's perfect for anyone looking to explore the South Downs. From here, you can enjoy all the benefits of easy access to everything you need, with the tranquillity of a rural setting. Your hosts have designed the entire apartment with the needs of their guests in mind. The three individually decorated, stylish bedrooms offer luxurious accommodation for up to six people on the first floor. Plus, there's a sofa bed in the studio for an additional two guests. The top floor is more vibrant, with bold colours and eye-catching design, including what we would usually call floor-to-ceiling windows, except these ones take over half of the roof as well. The kitchen is equipped with everything the savvy chef might need to rustle up delicious group dinners. Step onto the streets of the historic market town of Petworth, and you'll find antique shops, cafes and the National Trust Petworth House and Park. Slightly further afield, you're a mere twenty minutes from glorious Goodwood – famous for its historic racetrack and Festival of Speed – and half an hour from the coast at Climping. There are so many events locally that it's well worth a bit of research before you arrive.

Sleepy village life is on your doorstep at this charming end-terrace cottage in Amberley – the pearl of Sussex. Set at the foot of the South Downs and offering knockout views of the Amberley Wildbrooks nature reserve, it’s no surprise this is a declared Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A home for all seasons, winters are made for hunkering down beside the fire after country walks on the Downs. Meanwhile, summer is all about barbecues in the pretty walled garden. A cottage of this heritage comes with its quirks. Guests should be aware the twin bedroom is pocket-sized, and there are some steep stairs to contend with. But that's all part of the charm.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

This charming cottage with bags of character makes for a joyful escape from reality. It’s set on a large, seven-acre estate with a dramatic gravel driveway, but the cottage has its own entrance and is completely private. Inside, your hosts have created a cosy sanctuary with a comfortable, elegantly styled living space and well-equipped kitchen. The neat bedroom has a plump king-sized bed, with velvet cushions and layered blankets which push the snug factor up a couple of notches. In the rolling West Sussex countryside, this home is close to the Cathedral-spired city of Chichester, the cobbled streets of Petworth – with almost more antique shops than people – and the market town of Storrington.

Located right in the heart of Arundel, this Grade-II listed Victorian townhouse has stunning views over the castle and the Gothic cathedral on top of the hill. Originally designed and built by Joseph Hansom (the architect behind Arundel Cathedral), there are plenty of traditional features inside to admire. Modern gadgets like a flat-screen smart TV and slick wine fridge are seamlessly incorporated into the decor alongside original fireplaces, windows and chandelier-hung ceiling roses. We loved the mix of furniture, with individual pieces specially selected to fit each room, as well as the charming courtyard garden. Overall, we felt the home was warm, inviting, comfortable and very clean. Add in the location – just a two-minute walk from the high street – and it's a winner. Arundel is quaint and charming with pretty shops, art galleries, pubs, coffee shops and a fairytale castle to discover. Right by the river Avon and near to excellent walks in the South Downs, you're also close to great spots on the South Coast – it's less than twenty minutes to Worthing and about a forty-minute drive from Brighton. This is a lovely option for a family looking to linger for a while and enjoy a slower pace of life, within easy driving distance of the seaside.

This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

We're not exaggerating when we say this home is seconds away from the seaside. Perched next to East Preston's shingled shores and a short walk from the village's shops and eateries, you're no more than a five-minute stroll from everything you'll need. Furry friends and little ones will enjoy the sprawling garden at home. Complete with an alfresco dining table, a tyre swing, and lots of space to run amuck, it's an excellent option for post-beach hangouts. Inside, it's bright, cosy and roomy enough for the whole family. Most bedrooms are upstairs, and the ground-floor bunk bed is only suitable for children. Still, this home makes a delightful coastal retreat, indeed.

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky.
