We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

Originally built in the mid-17th century, this striking farmhouse was subsequently acquired by the wealthy Wainhouse family and split into five cottages to house their dyers. The current host's family has lived in this cottage for two-and-a-half centuries and — save for some modern gizmos in the kitchen and a pristine white bathroom — the space hasn't changed all too much in that time. The ceiling beams, exposed stone walls and original doors remain, while the gas-fired cast iron stove in the inglenook fireplace is a fitting addition given the history. There's a lovely flower-filled garden at the front of the property, which might seem odd until you realise that it's south-facing and receives plenty of sunshine — when it decides to make an appearance in this corner of Yorkshire. When it does, there's a whole lot to see and do nearby, including countless historic sights, such as Wainhouse Tower on the Wainhouse Heritage Trail four minutes' walk away, and Shibden Hall reached in just under an hour on foot. Alternatively, the charming town of Hebden Bridge takes around a quarter of an hour to reach in the car and the Peak District starts half an hour's drive from your front door.

Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot).

From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Visit Robin Hood’s Stride (eleven minutes by car or an hour’s walk), take a dip in the swimming hole at Youlgreave (an eight-minute drive) and spend an afternoon at stately Chatsworth House, fifteen minutes away by car.
