Experience life in the country at this cosy barn, nestled in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is the perfect spot to relax in nature, as you're surrounded by nine acres of fields, woodlands and idyllic English countryside to ramble and roam – your hosts even have pony and sheep paddocks that only add to the rustic charm. A short walk away is the quaint village of Great Bedwyn, where you'll find a local pub, cafe and shops, and there are a slew of canal towpaths and walking routes that the whole family will enjoy – including the pups. After a long day in the great outdoors, we loved coming home and unwinding in the bright living room, which has sumptuous sofas and a surround sound system that lends itself to family movie nights. The vibe here is warm, homey and inspired by the landscape – from the French doors upstairs showing off the view to the bespoke artwork made by a local artist. Come together for a meal around the dining table – prepared in the sleek kitchen – or, on warm days, enjoy an evening tipple in the garden while the kids let loose in the play area. That's what we call a rural getaway.

Whisk your loved one away to this rural retreat on the outskirts of Hungerford, Berkshire. The countryside surroundings are idyllic, especially from the heated pool – it’s exclusively yours to use between June and September. Guests don’t have access to the gardens, though. Inside, there is a lot of room for just two people, but the living area is still cosy with plush sofas. Bear in mind that it’s not suitable for children, including babies. Location wise, Hungerford’s antique shops, unique boutiques, and friendly pubs are just 6 miles away.

Your hosts have recently refreshed the interior, going beyond the usual lick of paint and new carpets, going as far as to kit it out with a brand new bespoke kitchen complete with a stunning range – perfect for the home cooks out there.

That said, Marlborough is blessed with plenty of options when it comes to dining out. Top picks include Rick Stein, which serves up modern British fare – Dan's at the Crown offers elevated versions of the classics, plus the Michelin Guide recommended The Bell at West Overton, where you'll tuck into Mediterranean-inspired dishes just a four-mile drive out of town.

Continue a few minutes further along the road, and it won't be long before you end up in Avebury, home to Europe's largest neolithic stone circle. If that whets your appetite, then it's a forty-minute drive south to Stonehenge, the world's most famous and sophisticated stone circle. 

For a day trip to a historic location with a less mysterious past, the charming city of Bath is an hour away. With beautiful Georgian architecture, contemporary culture and astonishingly well-preserved Roman baths, there's a reason it's regarded as an obligatory stop on so many itineraries.

The Old Chapel is a beautifully renovated home set in one of the area’s prettiest villages. It’s perfect for couples looking for a quiet, romantic retreat or young families with one or two small children. There are plenty of great walks along the Kennet & Avon Canal, just minutes from your door, as well as the Ridgeway and Savernake Forest, just a thirteen-minute drive away. The Wootton Rivers village is within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you’ll really be spoilt for choice with so much to see and do. Evenings are best spent with a glass of wine by the fire or sitting in the garden watching out for the barn owl that often swoops by the Chapel – and it's certainly big enough for a dog too. Original features include a solid oak arch door, arch windows and an exterior wall clock, which give this home oodles of character and charm, meaning you'll enjoy cosy nights in at this home feeling the bucolic calm. But if you feel like stretching your legs, the village has a 16th-century thatched pub that you'll be able to walk to in around three minutes. For foodies there is a wide choice of excellent restaurants in the local area – we’d especially recommend Stein’s or Dan's at the Crown, both located a ten-minute drive away. And for those ticking things off their bucket list, the world-famous Stonehenge is a forty-minute drive from your comfy home.

Glamping never looked so good than at this charming cabin nestled within a wild-flower meadow of a 2500-acre family-owned farm estate. Don't be fooled by its unassuming aluminum exterior. Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and lovingly converted by your hosts to provide all the creature comforts. The original features, like the working fireplace and traditional windows, make the space feel cosy despite the large size. Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Faerie World

After many years unoccupied, this former barn was treated to a complete revamp in the late 2010s. Today, a remarkable home awaits guests visiting rural Oxfordshire. Huge glass walls and stark white walls mean that the space feels immediately bright and inviting, while there's a superb mix of modern touches and more homely furnishings — bold pieces of artwork and the sleek grey kitchen sit quite happily alongside deep red rugs and picnic baskets repurposed as coffee tables.

Out through the glass doors, there's a charming walled garden complete with a lawn, patio and neat plant beds. Bat boxes and an owl loft have also been incorporated into the property to help the local wildlife. If you fancy a little more nature-spotting, there are plenty of walking routes throughout the surrounding Blenheim Estate. The city of Oxford takes around twenty-five minutes to reach in the car, too.

There's nothing quite like escaping to the country for a few days and this converted stable barn is a million miles away from the stresses of day-to-day life. Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.

This characterful cottage is perfect for a romantic getaway. A historic gatehouse on the grounds of the Shaftesbury Estate in rural Dorset, this petite one-bed lodge has recently undergone a loving refurb by one of the estate owners, Lady Shaftesbury. She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).

The Cotswolds Way runs right by the cottage and walks around Sudeley Castle are just a few miles away.

Get far away from the madding crowd in Thomas Hardy’s Dorset with this beautiful home – it’s the perfect romantic retreat. Surrounded by woodland, relax in the hot tub with a glass of fizz (or whip up a smoothie with the blender in the kitchen), and when the sun sets, cosy up by the fire pit. There’s a hammock to unwind in as well. 

The sylvan setting can be admired through the French doors in the living room, too – keep your eyes peeled for visiting wildlife. Out and about, the market town of Blandford Forum, with its array of eateries, is a six-minute drive. Further afield, Sandbanks, with its award-winning beach and chic boutiques, is just over a thirty-five-minute ride, so there’s plenty to keep you busy here.

It’s been recently renovated with wood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, and it boasts a charming blend of contemporary and antique furniture. If you like the idea of escaping the city for a charm-filled cottage, but could do without dusty beams and draughty doors, this is the right home for you. 

The cottage is warm and welcoming, the perfect setting for a romantic escape. Curl up on the sofa and admire the lush garden as you sip Champagne. When the weather is fine, open up the glass doors to create a stunning indoor/outdoor space. Whip up meals in the kitchen to enjoy outside in the garden, or fire up the barbecue for a real alfresco treat – you might like to walk to the nearby farm shop for local goodies to cook. Soak up the sunshine outside and enjoy the countryside views. In the evening, get cosy around the fire pit before sinking into the oh-so-comfortable bed upstairs. 

You could happily spend your days here, playing board games, reading, and admiring the garden, but if you do want to explore further afield, you have plenty of choice. The East Mendip Way passes right by the cottage, so bring your hiking boots if you want to get a bit closer to the Great Outdoors. It takes thirty-two minutes to drive to Bath, where you can admire the Roman Baths and explore the galleries, museums and theatres – not to mention the excellent array of eateries. Or perhaps you’ll just pootle around the countryside, popping into charming villages – Mells and Bruton are close by – and country pubs whenever the fancy strikes? Soho House members will enjoy its proximity to Babington House. However you spend your time here, you’ll love having such a delightful place to call home.

With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

What’s more, the Red Funnel Ferries that will take you to the Isle of Wight for the day are just a fourteen-minute walk or four-minute drive from this home, and if you find yourself inspired, the apartment’s desk space is the perfect spot to begin a novel set on the island. Then, after a fantastic meal out or a home-cooked dinner, we would love to head up to the shared roof terrace on the sixth floor at sunset to admire the stunning views of the cityscape.

It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms.
