She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).

The velvet furnishings and exposed brick only add to the step back in time. An honesty bar is housed in a secret cupboard by the billiard table, and there are floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where you can select a novel to lose yourself in. Each bedroom comes with a luxurious roll-top bath, and the wooden dividers that once separated horses have been cleverly repurposed to create privacy screens. Outside, vast acres of the manor's parkland are yours to explore, so remember to bring your welly boots. This home is a fine example of outstanding restoration – countryside lovers may never want to leave.

We're talking about bold splashes of colour (a vibrant coral in the living room and soothing forest green in the bedroom) plus beautiful illustrated artwork and the highest quality Egyptian cotton sheets. Always fantasized about being Lord or Lady of the Manor? Well, now you can be, sort of. This historic stable building (dating back to 1900) is part of a family estate located in the Dorset village of Hinton St Mary. Along with the estate’s gatehouse (also available on Plum Guide), it's been recently refurbished and is accessible to outsiders for the first time. We loved the balance between period features and brand new additions, like the shiny bathroom and kitchen gadgets. Everything is finished in the best possible taste, with some lovely personal touches. The owners clearly want their new guests to feel at home, as they’re happy to accommodate needs, whims and fancies, from arranging a paid-for chef or babysitter, to offering a choice of seasonal duvets, luggage storage, locally sourced ingredients in the welcome pack and everything you’d need to bring your baby (high chair, cot, dinnerware, pram, potty, etc). The home’s location is another definite selling point. At the end of a small village lane, near a cricket green and traditional pub, it’s picturesque and quaint. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton where there are plenty of shops and cafes, a great deli and butchers. This home makes a great base to explore the famous Dorset coast and countryside or simply settle back and relax by the wood-burning stove and imagine your servants are just out of sight.

There's nothing quite like escaping to the country for a few days and this converted stable barn is a million miles away from the stresses of day-to-day life. Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Hampshire, this charming flintstone cottage has sprawling views of the surrounding countryside and easy access to walking trails that take you through fields and woods and into picturesque villages with charming pubs. Roaming around this area (including visiting nearby Winchester) feels a bit like taking a step back in history – the air is fresher, the pace of life slower, and the atmosphere much more relaxed. During our visit, we were blown away by host Victoria's friendly nature and attention to detail. She lives on-site in the main house, and on arrival, she'll greet you with homemade jams and fresh eggs from her free-range chickens. Her quintessential English garden is a truly magical place, filled with herbs, flowers and fruit trees – imagine birds singing, deer munching on apples and stargazing under the clear night sky. On clear mornings, open the French doors and enjoy coffee on the terrace in the sunshine. Though there's not heaps of space – there's no living area, and the kitchenette is on the smaller side – it's still a cosy place for a couple to experience an idyllic stay in the country.

From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

There's also a heated swimming pool and a private tennis court, plus a Par 3 golf hole, an outdoor fire pit, a boules court and a football field, so you really will have everything needed for an endlessly fun-filled stay here. A former coach house, this charming home benefits from high vaulted ceilings with wooden beams and exposed brick walls, as well as a cosy fire in the living room – the perfect spot to gather around on chilly evenings. But it's the owner's personal treasures that make this place truly special, with art objects collected from their travels in Asia, including vintage artwork and a horse's muzzle. The location is fantastic too - Lacock is a picturesque National Trust village and is often used as a filming location – any fans of Downton Abbey or Harry Potter? It has a host of cafes, delis and traditional pubs nearby, while further down the road you’ll find beautiful Bath in less than thirty minutes.

Downstairs to the rear of the cottage, inspiration has been drawn from the Japanese onsens, manifesting in a garden spa bathroom complete with cedar shingles and exposed brick, which opens out onto a private courtyard. Outside, your hosts’ passion shines through even more, with handmade willow fences and sunshade. To the front of the cottage is a herb and flower-filled garden in which you can spend summer days dining alfresco or lazing about on one of two deck chairs.

Set in the centre of the Cotswolds, you are perfectly positioned for exploring the north and south of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at your leisure. The picturesque town of Bibury is just a ten-minute drive away, while Roman ruins lie six minutes in the other direction in Cirencester. Closer to home, why not take a stroll to The Gilbertine for a spot of brunch, or try out the Village Inn at Barnsley, or The Crown at Ampney, both just a five-minute drive away.

Save for the wooden beams and the odd patch of exposed brickwork, guests would have no idea that this was a converted threshing barn dating back to 1820 if they were to just go by the interior. Subtle spotlights in the ceiling, wooden floors and an ultra-sleek kitchen mean this home would slot in rather seamlessly in any urban environment. However, the views out of the huge windows give the game away — guests in the mezzanine living room can enjoy a bucolic panorama of Chalke Valley and acres of working arable farmland on which this building sits. As you can well imagine, there's a whole host of walking routes in the Wiltshire countryside that start pretty much as you leave the front door and the nearest pub is about twenty-five minutes away in the village of Fovent if you need an incentive. The town of Salisbury can be reached in the same amount of time in the car, as well.

Sheepwell

With stunning views across the surrounding fields, this converted farm building is spacious, bright and modern – and has been designed specifically for wheelchair users. Every little detail has been thought of, from profiling beds in the pretty bedroom and a designer wetroom, to a specially configured kitchen and an easy access patio garden. The original bones of the barn – huge oak beams and a vaulted ceiling – are there in all their glory, but there's a distinctly contemporary feel to the home, with all-white walls and grey furnishings. Its most striking feature is its window wall, which offers panoramic views from every position in the big, open-plan living room. Looking out across the fields of the arable farm on which it's set, the vast doors slide open to blend the indoor and outdoor space, and the sunsets over Fovant Down (famous for its regimental badges cut into the chalk) are spectacular. The owners live nearby and can offer advice on the best gourmet pubs to visit, and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Salisbury.

An elegant apartment by the sea, this home in Swanage is just a few minutes' walk from the seafront. Set in an attractive Victorian building, it's a perfect retreat for a couple or a solo traveller, and with its period features and Boho styling, it's bound to appeal to the romantic in you. 

Tall ceilings, sash windows, oak floorboards and chandeliers are the order of the day here, along with all-white decor and pops of colourful modern art. There's a squashy sofa in the cosy living room, and a well-kitted-out, modern kitchen if you'll be cooking at home. But it's the bedroom we really love here, with its vintage rattan headboard and French vintage furniture.
