Begin mornings with a cooked breakfast in the bright dining room before throwing open the patio doors and bowling out into the garden for lawn games in the warm sunshine. Enjoy cream tea on the patio or if the sky turns grey, bring it inside and curl up on the L-shaped couch in the inviting living space – we loved warming our toes in front of the wood-burner when the temperature dropped.

Take advantage of balmy days with a stroll through the endless countryside that surrounds your home – there are two circular walks close by, including a 5.5-mile ramble from Alderton to Dumbleton and back. Or why not jump in the car and explore the Regency town of Cheltenham? It’s only a twenty-minute drive away. You’ll probably want to spend some time outside though – the surrounding Gloucestershire countryside is a treat for the eyes and for the soul. The garden backs onto fields and you're a short walk away from Bredon Hill (a popular cycling destination), while a great local pub is just a quick fifteen-minute bike ride away, or closer by car. The cottage itself is modern and thoughtfully decorated, with bright skylights, roomy bathrooms and yellow and blue walls that create a relaxing space. As the name the suggests, this beautifully converted home used to be a dairy, or to be more accurate, a former cheese press. Fully modernised with reclaimed timber floors and underfloor heating throughout, it's now a cosy and comfortable retreat. French doors lead from the sitting room to a flower-filled private garden where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun go down. As an added bonus, you can pre-order delicious meals from your host during your stay. With plenty of walks and pubs close by, it’s the perfect base for exploring the unspoilt countryside – Bredon Hill and the Malvern Hills are especially lovely. A little further afield are the popular destinations of Stratford-upon-Avon and Cheltenham, both under an hour’s drive away.

Set in the village of Laverton, this home promises a relaxing rural retreat. Ideal for a family, there’s plenty of space here with a charming garden and room to spread out across three floors, with whoever bags the bedroom stretching across the entire top floor able to enjoy the sweeping vistas. Sure, you have to climb a fairly steep staircase to reach the room and you’ll need to watch your head on the sloping ceilings, but we think it’s worth it for the sunsets over Bredon Hill alone.

Inside the cottage, a cosy wood-burning stove awaits – perfect for cold nights in – especially after a day spent walking through this idyllic scenery. The country-chic kitchen, dining table for eight and wonderful garden with expansive views are just the icing on the cake. If you'd like a change from the picture-postcard villages, then the charming town of Cheltenham is just eight miles away, while the beautiful cities of Oxford and Bath are a little over an hour's drive.

At home, you'll find historic features alongside modern touches – we were particularly fond of the original inglenook fireplace and the kitchen's skylight. After a hike, you'll want to relax in the freestanding bathtub before enjoying a barbecue out in the garden. Alternatively, head to the nearby pub or cook up a roast in the well-equipped kitchen.

How’s a 15th-century castle that once housed King Charles I and Lady Jane Grey (to name a few) sound for a neighbour? It’s just footsteps away from this charming Cotswolds cottage –⁠ originally part of a paper mill on the vast estate. It’s worth noting there’s only one family bathroom here. And if we were being picky, the outside shared courtyard isn’t the most inspiring space. But with five award-winning gardens and a castle to explore (you’ll have complimentary access), we don’t think you’ll mind. After a little more bustle? The quintessential Cotswolds town of Winchcombe, with its traditional inns and tearooms, is an easy stroll away.

Staying in this fairytale cottage offers you a taste of the high life and a gorgeous view of the green rolling hills and unspoiled landscapes. The historical centre of Winchcombe is only a short fifteen-minute walk away as well, which should set you up for at least a few days of sightseeing – there's so much to discover, from chocolate-box buildings to cute-as-button tea rooms. The home itself is furnished with antiques, original paintings, high-quality soft furnishings, and a lovely collection of books chosen by Lady Ashcroft herself – and you'll love curling up with one of them on the comfy armchairs – we especially love the rustic fireplace that keeps things ultra-cosy. Set out across three-period cottages (all a five-second walk from each other), and with enough space for all sixteen of you to pile in, no one needs to be left at home for this holiday. 

With one home dating back to the arts and crafts movement, and another boasting a listed status, these elegantly styled homes ooze period charm. Spill out into the large open plan living space of the main house (with three bedrooms) and cook up a hearty feast – there’s room for each and every one of you (and a few extra guests) around that magnificent banquet table. The house, which includes a high-ceilinged drawing room, French-style bedrooms, and even a yoga studio, sits within 13 acres of stunning gardens. The grounds also feature an outdoor heated pool, which little ones are sure to love. If you can tear yourselves away from the house, you’ll find Broadway and its shops and restaurants on your doorstep. 

The Foxy Snug

Only a mile from Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle, this pocket-sized hideaway is a perfect fit for two. We love how cosy and bright the living space is. Whether you're preparing breakfast in the mint green kitchenette, unwinding with a glass of wine on the comfy sofa or snuggling up in the sumptuous bed adorned with a William Morris duvet, you'll feel right at home here. And the views aren't too shabby, either. In the morning, savour a cup of tea and listen to the birdsong on the private patio, overlooking the tree-lined paddock. Evenings call for charcoal barbecues as the sun goes down, followed by glasses of wine under the stars. 

Ramblers will love this rural spot. Public footpaths lead through the rolling countryside towards the Cotswold Way and along the River Isbourne, and with pubs and restaurants in Winchcombe, you'll have everything you need just a stone's throw away. If it's the magic of the Cotswolds you're after, take an afternoon drive to Bourton-on-the-Water – it's twenty-five minutes away.

Spend a morning exploring the magnificent castle and gardens before strolling into Winchcombe, less than ten minutes away. Here, you’ll find a pretty High Street lined with bakeries, indie boutiques and quaint tearooms. If you’ve a taste for fine dining, the Michelin starred 5 in Winchcombe restaurant is sure to impress. But if it's pub grub and local brews you’re after, the nearby inns will set you right.

Set in Ford, an attractive hamlet along the banks of the River Windrush, this romantic cottage offers the highest levels of charm and comfort for your Cotswolds escape. It’s hidden away within the grounds of the host’s own home, but offers complete privacy. There’s a small but well-equipped galley kitchen with a Nespresso machine and milk frother for a little luxury morning coffee. But our favourite bit is the four-poster, king-size bed which guarantees a luxurious night’s sleep. just what you need after a day tackling some of the best hiking routes in the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds Way runs right by the cottage and walks around Sudeley Castle are just a few miles away.

Oozing in medieval character with its sixteenth-century facade and original features throughout, Mercia hides a little secret behind its quirky front. You wouldn't expect it, yet a light-filled and contemporary entertaining space features at the back, with fabulous views of the Isbourne Valley and Sudeley Hill. It opens up to a large patio with seating and a barbecue, followed by a long sloping garden, so you can continue admiring the vistas while something nice is grilling and children play on the lawn. 

There are plenty of cosy spaces to retire to after a day of Cotswold exploration – from the sitting room with a charming inglenook fireplace to an inviting roll-top bathtub in the master suite. Plenty of boutiques, cafés and restaurants are within a two-minute walk from the front door. The home itself is an elegant, light-filled space. Tradition meets contemporary living here, with comfy squashy sofas and exposed wood beams. The crowning jewel is the beautiful courtyard and its pergola draped with wisteria. Your hosts have worked tirelessly to deliver interiors that feel both modern and historically charming at once – the greatest example of which being the upstairs bedrooms. Both are tucked under beams and eaves but still maintain an atmosphere of luxury through high-quality bedding and furniture. Start your day by tucking into breakfast in the bright conservatory before heading off to explore nearby villages – picturesque Chipping Campden is a twelve-minute drive away, while Bourton-on-the-Water is half an hour away. If cooking during your country break is not on the cards, the Fleece Inn is steps away and serves traditional English favourites, or you could arrange a private chef through your hosts. Then, at the end of a long day, return home to enjoy a quiet night in by the TV or watch the sun go down from the cushioned window seat.

This period cottage, set within the grounds of a 15th-century castle and gardens once favoured by Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles I, should do nicely. Better still, you’ll be able to uncover the fascinating history with free entry to the estate. Ready for a change of scene? The bustle of Winchcombe, with its traditional inns and tearooms, is just a short stroll away. One of the largest holiday cottages on the estate, the open-plan living area leads out onto a private courtyard overlooking the River Isbourne. Perfect for morning coffees and evening tipples.

Queen Mary

Sitting just outside the peaceful village of Weston-sub-edge, this thoughtfully restored country home offers comfort, style and beautiful views. Inside you’ll find two living rooms, an open-plan kitchen and plenty of space to switch off and socialise. There is also a ground floor bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and two of the upstairs rooms feature zip-and-link beds – offering flexible sleeping arrangements. Outside, the private garden lends itself perfectly to lazy summer afternoons, while the location means easy access to beautiful walking trails and picnic spots. It’s also less than a ten-minute drive to Chipping Campden.

Found within the grounds of a Grade-II listed Tudor farmhouse, this cottage's lime walls and timber frame are traditional in style, but you'll find that the interior is nothing but contemporary once you step behind the front door.

The wooden floors, white walls and a corner sofa make the living room an effortlessly cool place in which to relax, although the oversized French limestone fireplace adds some rustic charm. The kitchen has an Aga and Belfast sink for the rural fantasy, but is otherwise a modern mix of glossy black surfaces and tiled walls. We're willing to bet that the elegant freestanding bathtub will bear witness to some relaxing soaks, as well.

When the weather's on the warmer side, you can sit out on the south-facing patio that overlooks an orchard and perhaps even cook up something tasty on the barbecue. Once the sun has disappeared for the night, there's a fire pit to keep your party warm and toasty.

The property sits just on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, so you don't need us to tell you that there are a bountiful amount of quaint villages and walking routes — including the Cotswolds Way — that sit nearby. The town of Tewkesbury only takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

To take the title of ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the environment has to be pretty spectacular. With The Cotswolds being one of only forty-six places awarded this coveted accolade, this lush countryside region certainly matches its description. But just as you thought it couldn’t get any more outstanding, how does staying on a castle estate sound? Just a twenty-one-minute drive from the bustling city of Cheltenham, this apartment offers a regal base to come home to after a day at the races.

While you could spend all day perusing Sudeley Castle and its ten gorgeous gardens (which you can do as much as you want, with free entry as a guest of the cottage), you’ve got history to discover closer to home. Your cottage is set in an old paper mill, where you can admire original timber beams and exposed stone walls throughout.

Within these cosy interiors, the lounge exudes a certain warmth that feels unique to rural England. Recline on a chequered chaise longue with a glass of champagne, or cook up Sunday roast to serve on the wooden dining bench. And make sure you put those fabulous sash windows to use – your river views offer the most calming Cotswolds scene.

The Canopy of the Forest

Tucked along a tree-lined lane on the outskirts of Winchcombe, this sweet cottage is as cosy as it looks. The red brick exterior exudes a simple country charm, but step inside and you'll be surprised by the sophisticated living space and contemporary comforts.

From the honey-coloured rug to the blue velvet sofa, pops of bold colour are everywhere you look. The roomy kitchen is a dream for home cooks – it's stocked with bakeware, crockery and everything else you'll need to rustle up family suppers to share around the dining table. Another surprise is the private sun-dappled terrace. It calls for barbecues and sundowners in the fresh air, while the shared pasture is perfect for dogs. But our favourite part is by far the decadent bathroom. End the day with a bubble-filled soak in the freestanding tub – a glass of wine in hand – or if you're not one for baths, the rainfall feature in the walk-in shower is just as lush.

Outside, Winchcombe's medieval charms and rolling countryside are begging to be explored. Don your comfiest shoes and set off towards Sudeley Castle or the Cotswold Way – there's a public footpath just off the lane that connects to it – followed by a pint and pub grub at the local taverns in the village. For a change of scenery, Cheltenham, Bourton-on-the-Water and many other chocolate-box Cotswolds villages are within driving distance.

Once home to carriages and coaches, this 18th-century coaching house has become a cosy country home. The entire ground floor has been turned into an almost open-plan living space, adorned with candelabra, art from around the globe and a wood-burning stove at its heart. The kitchen has a farmhouse feel with its range-style cooker and old coach wheel displayed as a reminder of the building’s former purpose.
