On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Despite its rustic charm and rough Scots pine exterior, the cabin has been renovated to create a luxurious home, with antique furnishings, a log fire and vintage art. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners.

After a long walk around the grounds, have a soak in the wood-fired Swedish hot tub, then grill some local, fresh produce on the Big Green Egg barbecue (loved by Michelin chefs). There's a shared sauna (fired by wood too) and an outdoor cold shower for afterwards – you'll find it set within the trees, beside the vegetable garden. Pick some veggies (or your lovely hosts can pick to order for you) to take back to the cottage. You can get fresh eggs from the shop here too. 

Back at your home, put some vinyl on the record player and chill out or take in the fabulous views. There's a mixture of antique and modern furniture, gorgeous fabrics and quirky items – your hosts have lavished lots of attention to detail on this place. There's an artist's studio located outside too. It's no wonder this home was featured in the top twenty-five UK cottages in The Times.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy right from your doorstep, or further afield, history lovers can head to Dunnottar Castle, just over a thirty-minute drive away. It's around the same distance to Stonehaven, a small and picturesque fishing harbour, while Balmoral Castle, open to the public at certain times of the year, is just over a forty-minute ride.

The kitchen’s four-door Aga means country-style feasts are on the menu. There’s more to this home than pure opulence and Victorian splendour. From the moment you lay eyes on this idyllic lodge set on the historic Balcarres Estate, you'll fall in love with the rural setting and rustic character. We adore every inch of this home, inside and out – it's the definition of warm and welcoming with oodles of country charm. Cosy seating abounds in the living room – take your pick between the fluffy armchairs or the cushy tartan sofa – and the green kitchen is as well-stocked as it is stylish. Embracing the slow life is easy here – just picture waking up to gorgeous views in the beautiful bedrooms, soaking in the freestanding copper bathtub in the master bedroom and snuggling up with a book and glass of scotch in front of the wood-burner. And the garden is truly something special, with a stunning Victorian conservatory perfect for afternoon teas, a picturesque alfresco dining area and unbeatable scenery. Roam the 800 acres of woodlands, wildflower meadows and parkland in your backyard, then gather around the outdoor firepit while the evening dwindles away. When you want to venture out, St Andrews is only a fifteen-minute drive – perfect for a day trip – while Edinburgh is less than an hour away if you want to spend a day in the city.

Where The Wildflowers Spring

Nestled within Fife's Balcarres Estate, surrounded by some of Scotland's finest countryside, this historical home awaits. Dating back to the late 1800s, the redbrick facade and Jacobean style are truly charming, and many original features are still intact. The enclosed garden wraps around the whole cottage, offering a private oasis where you can sip your morning coffee or simply breathe in the fresh air on a short stroll to prepare for the day ahead. There's much to explore in this part of the country, from world-class golf courses to romantic castles and a beautiful stretch of coastline. Take a trip to the pristine beaches of Largo Bay, where you'll find golden sands, a village and a small harbor.

With so much of the coast and countryside to explore, a relaxing evening at home is the best way to wind down. Cook a rustic feast on the barbecue, then dine alfresco surrounded by the greenery of the garden. For dessert, toast some marshmallows around the fire pit, then head indoors when the night turns chilly to enjoy a long soak in the freestanding copper bathtub, which you'll find in the master bedroom.

From the outside, this Victorian home looks as quaint as quaint can be, but inside, guests will find an apartment that mixes vintage and modern aspects with considerable dexterity. In the living room, a large bay window floods the space with natural daylight, which dances nicely off the wooden floors and walls painted in muted grey. The Persian rug and deep blue sofa add some bold splashes of colour. Elsewhere, we're big fans of the gleaming copper bathtub in the master bathroom that promises to be as comfortable as it is handsome. Off the same room, there's access to a cute terrace with alfresco seating — yes, it's Scotland, but put on a jumper and enjoy the dramatic sunsets that this corner of the country enjoys. The home's only an eight-minute walk from the River Ness and Inverness's town centre, which includes a castle and an art gallery. Alternatively, if you're feeling more active, Cairngorms National Park takes around half an hour to reach in the car.

The Daughter of Time

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Highlands at this cottage in Invermoriston. The leafy garden is a haven for wildlife, from badgers and birds to deer and elusive pine martens. On chilly evenings, get cosy in front of the living area's log burner with a glass of Scottish whisky. Expect traditional touches in every room – some may consider the decor a tad dated, but we think it only adds to the charm. Behind the house, private woodlands lead onto the Great Glen Way, while the village is about a kilometre away. That said, we think you'll need a car to make the most of the setting – Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness are both within driving distance.

Pine Marten Paradise

Nestled in Kingussie within the Cairngorms National Park, this charming home is perfect for large group getaways in the Scottish Highlands. Set across three floors, there’s plenty of space to spread out here and enjoy some quiet time with a good book. But for us, what really caught our eye is the location. Entertainment abounds in the local area – visit the Highland Folk Museum for an insight into local history, peruse the art on display at the Iona Gallery, take a whiskey distillery tour at nearby Dalwhinnie, or visit the Highland Wildlife Park, unbridled fun for all the family. However you spend your days, memorable moments are guaranteed. 

Highland Welcome

If you want to try and spot the ever-elusive Loch Ness Monster, this old stone clergy house that has sat on the banks of the famed body of water for over a century-and-a-half lets you do so in the utmost comfort. Inside, the rooms are filled with varnished wood furnishings, boldly printed rugs and roaring fireplaces — so you can look out the windows at the loch without feeling cold in the slightest. Other noble flourishes come in the shape of the four-poster beds and the two deep claw-footed bathtubs. There's even a small garden out the back, but you're hardly short of beautiful outdoor attractions around these parts. Urquhart Castle is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Dores Beach can be reached in twenty minutes in case you're in the mood for a bracing wild swim. Although the address feels both rural and secluded, the town centre of Inverness only takes seventeen minutes to reach in the car, too.

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

Step inside, and you'll find a cosy space with plenty of seating, ideal for flopping down with a glass of whisky at the end of a long day exploring. The hosts have put great thought into every aspect of this home, from the luxury toiletries to the Bose speaker systems in every bedroom and the extra-large bathtub where you can soak in perfect peace. You're just a few steps away from the banks of the River Ness, and Inverness Castle is less than five minutes away from your front door, along with a range of shops and restaurants in the city centre. Jump in the car, and it takes twenty-five minutes to reach world-famous Loch Ness for some monster-spotting. Even if you don't spy Nessie, you can hop on one of the boat tours to sail along the water, or hit one of the nearby walking trails for an invigorating hike through the Highland landscapes.
