Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. There are miles and miles of tracks on your doorstep for walking, cycling and running. These run through one of Britain's finest private forests or across miles and miles of moorland wilderness.

On-site, you'll also be in blissful serenity as the house comes with its own wood-fired hot tub in the garden. Pick some seasonal vegetables from the garden in preparation for a delicious homemade feast. With a big Green Egg barbecue all to yourselves – we bet you can smell the delightful smokey aromas already. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners.

The home itself is a cleverly converted hayloft, with a covered outside area and accommodation over two floors. Crucially, the living room is on the top floor, taking full advantage of the superb views. Styled to perfection with a mix of deep tones, fun artwork and comfy furniture, it's a surprisingly modern space that wouldn't look out of place in any major city. And your eyes aren't deceiving you; there really is a bright pink second bedroom. It's the addition of a log burner and the odd vintage milking stool that really ground this place in its stunning surroundings.

The site has quite a few surprises in store too. There's a beautifully dressed bring-your-own-bottle pub for socialising with the other guests, a veggie garden and clutch of hens, plus a luxurious wood-fired sauna to relax your aching muscles after a day hiking. And there's an excellent shop on the site, so although you may be a fifteen-minute drive from Banchory and thirty-five from the coast at Stonehaven, you're unlikely to run out of the essentials with plenty of local produce on hand.

Or go hiking in the area – a gate leads from the garden of this home to forest walks. Alternatively, you can simply relax and dine alfresco on the patio here. Inside, there’s a wood burner and a welcoming open-plan living space, perfect for entertaining your family and friends.

Set in an estate of 15,000 acres, surrounded by forest and moorland on the banks of the River Dye, you'll find this ancient, stone-built cottage. For centuries it was an inn, and troops rested here before going to battle in the Jacobite Rebellion nearly 300 years ago. 

After a long walk around the grounds, have a soak in the wood-fired Swedish hot tub, then grill some local, fresh produce on the Big Green Egg barbecue (loved by Michelin chefs). There's a shared sauna (fired by wood too) and an outdoor cold shower for afterwards – you'll find it set within the trees, beside the vegetable garden. Pick some veggies (or your lovely hosts can pick to order for you) to take back to the cottage. You can get fresh eggs from the shop here too. 

Back at your home, put some vinyl on the record player and chill out or take in the fabulous views. There's a mixture of antique and modern furniture, gorgeous fabrics and quirky items – your hosts have lavished lots of attention to detail on this place. There's an artist's studio located outside too. It's no wonder this home was featured in the top twenty-five UK cottages in The Times.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy right from your doorstep, or further afield, history lovers can head to Dunnottar Castle, just over a thirty-minute drive away. It's around the same distance to Stonehaven, a small and picturesque fishing harbour, while Balmoral Castle, open to the public at certain times of the year, is just over a forty-minute ride.

Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Nestled in Kingussie within the Cairngorms National Park, this charming home is perfect for large group getaways in the Scottish Highlands. Set across three floors, there’s plenty of space to spread out here and enjoy some quiet time with a good book. But for us, what really caught our eye is the location. Entertainment abounds in the local area – visit the Highland Folk Museum for an insight into local history, peruse the art on display at the Iona Gallery, take a whiskey distillery tour at nearby Dalwhinnie, or visit the Highland Wildlife Park, unbridled fun for all the family. However you spend your days, memorable moments are guaranteed. 

Highland Welcome

If you want to try and spot the ever-elusive Loch Ness Monster, this old stone clergy house that has sat on the banks of the famed body of water for over a century-and-a-half lets you do so in the utmost comfort. Inside, the rooms are filled with varnished wood furnishings, boldly printed rugs and roaring fireplaces — so you can look out the windows at the loch without feeling cold in the slightest. Other noble flourishes come in the shape of the four-poster beds and the two deep claw-footed bathtubs. There's even a small garden out the back, but you're hardly short of beautiful outdoor attractions around these parts. Urquhart Castle is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Dores Beach can be reached in twenty minutes in case you're in the mood for a bracing wild swim. Although the address feels both rural and secluded, the town centre of Inverness only takes seventeen minutes to reach in the car, too.

Jump in the car, and it takes twenty-five minutes to reach world-famous Loch Ness for some monster-spotting. Even if you don't spy Nessie, you can hop on one of the boat tours to sail along the water, or hit one of the nearby walking trails for an invigorating hike through the Highland landscapes.
