If you have a special occasion to celebrate or are planning a big get-together, this is the place to do it. Sleeping up to twenty-four guests in absolute luxury, this 17th-century baronial castle with its pepper-pot roofs, Victorian walled garden and quintessential Highland setting is the stuff of fairy tales. Children will love it here – the 18-acre grounds are like a magical wild playground – though with a Whisky Library brimming with fine single malts, Scottish gins (and whisky tutors on call), adults will love it perhaps even more. On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Although just over 30 miles from Aberdeen, also known as The Silver City due to its granite buildings, this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis. Upon arrival, rolling hills and fields stretch for miles around this stony bolthole in the countryside. But the experience isn’t exactly rustic. Your host welcomes you with a luxury hamper, packed with nibbles and a bottle of champagne. Light up the wood-burning stove, get cosy under the ANTA of Scotland blankets, and say cheers to luxe country living. On sunny days in the garden, the little ones can keep entertained with the swing-ball set, or building their secret den in the tipi. Don't forget your binoculars, because you also have a great view of both the nearby RSPB bird reserve and the train line – both birdwatchers and trainspotters will be delighted. There are several paths of varying difficulty close by, meaning that whether you want an invigorating hike or a gentle stroll, there's a trail to suit you. Explore the wild landscapes from rivers to moors, mountains to lochs, before returning to the welcoming glow of the wood-burning stove, and perhaps a wee dram of whisky.

A five-minute walk from the shores of Loch Alvie, this traditional Scottish cottage sits within the Cairngorms National Park. Walking trails and towering munros are on your doorstep and the outdoor activity haven of Aviemore is just a five-minute drive away. The exterior of this cottage is as traditional as it gets, with a white-stone facade and slate-grey roof like the crofters’ cottages of old. With two lounges where you can put your feet up, you’ll be kept in the lap of luxury. We love the clean, minimalist interiors, with whites and light greys dominating the colour scheme. Nods to Scottish heritage come through with tartan throws in the bedrooms, but there’s a distinctly modern feel throughout. On rainy days, play chess in the sunroom. On bright afternoons, enjoy a picnic in the garden or patio. And on chilly nights, soak in the clawfoot tub after a homecooked meal from your private chef.

The Cashmere Goat

This former railway lodge with a wood-burning stove and cottage garden couldn't be more charming if it tried. A home of this age does come with its compromises. The living room and twin bedroom are both on the snug side, and the only bathroom is a little dated. It's also worth noting that the Strathspey Steam Railway runs daily just fifteen metres from your door – you'll hear it before you see it. But we think this only adds to the experience of staying here. Location-wise, there's a café and food store within walking distance, and all the highland must-sees, including Aviemore, Loch Morlich, and the Cairngorms National Park, are all just a short drive away.

The Railway Cabin

This cosy bungalow is perfect for a family holiday in the Scottish Highlands. It’s just 2 kilometres from the centre of Aviemore, known for its wealth of adventure sports – this is a haven for hillwalking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. In winter, you can ski, and in summer you can hit the links of a nearby golf course. When you’re not out exploring the Cairngorms National Park, you’ll be glad to have a comfortable home-from-home to relax in. A well-equipped kitchen makes it a practical base – why not try your hand at preparing some classic Scottish dishes?

The great outdoors: nowhere does it better than Scotland. Here, around a forty-five-minute drive from Aberdeen, you'll be nestled along with a small collection of cabins and cottages inside a vast private forest – far from the madding crowd. Perfect for lovers of hiking, cycling and wild swimming, there's even a range of bushcraft and wild wellness classes to choose from, run on-site by trained instructors.

The home itself is a cleverly converted hayloft, with a covered outside area and accommodation over two floors. Crucially, the living room is on the top floor, taking full advantage of the superb views. Styled to perfection with a mix of deep tones, fun artwork and comfy furniture, it's a surprisingly modern space that wouldn't look out of place in any major city. And your eyes aren't deceiving you; there really is a bright pink second bedroom. It's the addition of a log burner and the odd vintage milking stool that really ground this place in its stunning surroundings.

The site has quite a few surprises in store too. There's a beautifully dressed bring-your-own-bottle pub for socialising with the other guests, a veggie garden and clutch of hens, plus a luxurious wood-fired sauna to relax your aching muscles after a day hiking. And there's an excellent shop on the site, so although you may be a fifteen-minute drive from Banchory and thirty-five from the coast at Stonehaven, you're unlikely to run out of the essentials with plenty of local produce on hand.

Set in an estate of 15,000 acres, surrounded by forest and moorland on the banks of the River Dye, you'll find this ancient, stone-built cottage. For centuries it was an inn, and troops rested here before going to battle in the Jacobite Rebellion nearly 300 years ago. 

After a long walk around the grounds, have a soak in the wood-fired Swedish hot tub, then grill some local, fresh produce on the Big Green Egg barbecue (loved by Michelin chefs). There's a shared sauna (fired by wood too) and an outdoor cold shower for afterwards – you'll find it set within the trees, beside the vegetable garden. Pick some veggies (or your lovely hosts can pick to order for you) to take back to the cottage. You can get fresh eggs from the shop here too. 

Back at your home, put some vinyl on the record player and chill out or take in the fabulous views. There's a mixture of antique and modern furniture, gorgeous fabrics and quirky items – your hosts have lavished lots of attention to detail on this place. There's an artist's studio located outside too. It's no wonder this home was featured in the top twenty-five UK cottages in The Times.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy right from your doorstep, or further afield, history lovers can head to Dunnottar Castle, just over a thirty-minute drive away. It's around the same distance to Stonehaven, a small and picturesque fishing harbour, while Balmoral Castle, open to the public at certain times of the year, is just over a forty-minute ride.

Pick some seasonal vegetables from the garden in preparation for a delicious homemade feast. With a big Green Egg barbecue all to yourselves – we bet you can smell the delightful smokey aromas already. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners.
