This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

This splendidly restored Victorian house will whisk you away to another era. Designed by a prominent 19th-century Scottish architect, this place retains its original charm. We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Peek through the telescope in the lounge and see if you can spot the isle of Arran in the distance. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. If you can tear yourself away, miles of stunning natural trails await you in nearby Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. In the evening, stoke the logs in the fireplace, pour yourself a glass of fine Scotch whisky and make the most of your waterside abode.

Built in the 1900s. this magical estate is a National Monuments of Scotland building and was designed by two artists. Their effect can still be seen today, with tapestries hanging on walls and quirky art pieces - alongside bookcases stuffed with reading material in nearly all the rooms, giving the home a cosy lived-in feel. Spread across five turrets, the space combines castle fantasies with historical touches. Wannabe sleeping beauties will love the four-poster bed in the top room - when you do arise, bathe in the bathroom with its vintage tub and swirling retro wallpaper. Those who prefer fact over fiction can nose around the home's original features, including in the wooden beamed kitchen, complete with an AGA for cooking something delicious.

A getaway for all seasons, this home offers a Scottish escape to remember. This enchanting home can be found on 25 acres of private woodland between the moor and Loch Sunart. Forage for chanterelles and berries, pick wildflowers – and make use of your host’s flower-arranging kit – while the kids run wild in the forest camp. It’s an incredible setting for an outdoorsy holiday, with wild swimming, biking, and kayaking all on the cards. The Scandinavian/Hebridean style house is cosy and comfortable, with a fire inside as well as a fire bowl outside. You can admire views across Loch Sunart to the Isle of Carna, Morvern, and Mull from the living room, main bedroom, and the decking and garden. There’s a bit of magic in a home like this.

The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. Fishing rods and mackerel lines are also available on request. The surrounding area offers many popular destinations such as Inverawe Smokehouse and Shop, Taynuilt village, and Oban, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. Children and dogs are welcome, but guests must be aware that there is a small garden pond at the back of the house and that the property is accessed via a rough forestry track.

It really is all about location when it comes to this former dower home, set on a slope right above the east side of Loch Fyne. With a private bay and over fifty acres of estate, it’s a personal haven for anyone looking to explore Scotland at a more mellow pace. 

Though historic – the house was used as a base for the Norwegian commandos who went on the Heroes of Telemark raid during WWII – you’ll likely spend more time outside of the home, but with plenty of windows facing out onto the waters, it won’t be the worst thing if you do find yourself curled up next to the wood-burner with a cup of coffee. With those breathtaking views visible from almost everywhere, including the games room, keep yourselves entertained with friendly table tennis competitions or a few rounds of pool.

When colder days force you away from the bay, pack up your spades and buckets and trade the loch waters for a heated indoor pool. A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

What could be better than spotting red squirrels, lapwings, house martins and geese in your private garden? Well, spotting them from the bubbling warmth of a hot tub for one. This 18th century home sits in glorious Perthshire countryside in the hamlet of Monzie. It’s a seven-minute drive to the nearest shops, pubs and coffee shops in idyllic Crieff. The surrounding countryside is home to winding walks (some from your doorstep) where you can spot deer and red kites, cycling trails, fishing and golfing. Though you may just want to stay in your secluded country paradise, playing croquet on the lawn, soaking in the hot tub or enjoying a barbecue in the sun. Inside, you’ll find several spots for the group to spread out – curled up with a book in the sunny conservatory, perched by the crackling fire in the main lounge, playing table football in the games room or perhaps even tinkling a tune on the upright piano in the dining room. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where a four-door Aga purrs with endless warmth. Entertainment abounds in the local area – visit the Highland Folk Museum for an insight into local history, peruse the art on display at the Iona Gallery, take a whiskey distillery tour at nearby Dalwhinnie, or visit the Highland Wildlife Park, unbridled fun for all the family. However you spend your days, memorable moments are guaranteed.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Reclaim the Hills

In a former life, this cottage was home to railway workers back in the early 1900s. Since then, it's had a complete transformation into a romantic hideaway, while still retaining much of its traditional charm. The kitchen echoes this home's industrial past, with polished concrete worktops and burr elm shelving giving it a historic feel, while the Edwardian table is a fantastic place to gather and share a homemade meal. Outside, you'll find a private garden and wooden deck, where you can fire up the barbecue and enjoy an alfresco feast as you gaze over the Insh Marshes across to the incredible landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park. Don't forget your binoculars, because you also have a great view of both the nearby RSPB bird reserve and the train line – both birdwatchers and trainspotters will be delighted. There are several paths of varying difficulty close by, meaning that whether you want an invigorating hike or a gentle stroll, there's a trail to suit you. Explore the wild landscapes from rivers to moors, mountains to lochs, before returning to the welcoming glow of the wood-burning stove, and perhaps a wee dram of whisky. 

Cairngorm Charm

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

This cottage sits on a 2000-acre estate where walking trails through the woodlands bring you to waterfalls, lochs and the craggy coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. A forty-minute stroll down a forest track brings you to a deserted beach, and the coastal town of Portpatrick is a twenty-minute walk away. A welcome pack of local produce – eggs, butter, bread, home baking, artisanal cheese and the estate’s handmade toiletries – awaits you on arrival. Perhaps head out to the sunny dining spot on the lawn for your first meal. Here you’ll find a fire pit to keep the evening chill at bay. The home itself is beautifully decorated. The living room is like a wild meadow with its magenta and violet mural of wild birds and flowers and pot plants seem to fill every nook. Yet there’s a grand feeling to the tufted velvet sofas, and the writer’s desk in the corner is an Edwardian antique from Dunskey Castle itself. Once the wood-burner is crackling away it’s super cosy too. Come bedtime, bedrooms are a fairytale fantasy with plush beds fit for a princess. Especially the twin room, with silk drapes flowing over the beds. With deer, pheasants and wild birds filling forest walks, you can feel like you’ve stepped right into a Disney movie.
