The Woodman's Retreat

Unplug and unwind at this cosy retreat for two, hidden away in an idyllic country estate. Perched on the Scottish borders, you’re perfectly placed for day trips to North Scotland, Cumbria’s Hadrian’s Wall, and the coast of Solway Firth – all just forty minutes’ drive away. Or you could just stay holed up at the cottage and country grounds, steeped in history. Be sure to ask your hosts about the fascinating past of the estate – once a no man’s land and a haven to criminals. The host’s family owns the estate these days, so you’re in safe hands here. Follow the woodland path from the cottage and discover a wood-burning hot tub beneath a canopy of leaves. We hear watching the sunset peek through the trees as the woodland bats begin to fly is magical. Then fire up the barbecue for an evening dining under the stars. During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. Then head home to get toasty beside the log burner before a long soak in the rolltop bath found in the elegant bedroom upstairs.

Woodland Cottage

It's easy to see why this stunning Georgian villa caught our eye – recently renovated, its chic interior exudes charm, garnering it plenty of attention and an appearance on national TV. We fell in love with the orangery, which is the perfect space for cooking (or having someone cook for you) and feasting. And each of the bedrooms has a unique design, adding lovely variety to your stay. The home is also an ideal base for hikers looking for an inviting homestead to return to after a ramble in the Lake District or North Pennines, while the local village houses an award-winning country pub.

The New Georgian Era

If it's good enough for Mary Queen Of Scots, then it's good enough for us. The iconic figure often stayed at this grand castle, taking advantage of the rural location and beautiful surroundings. Now, you can follow in her footsteps.

Feel like royalty in every room of this awe-inspiring building, each inch infused with historical significance. Rustic yet comfortable, the castle maintains its regal atmosphere whilst adding a layer of intimacy that puts you instantly at ease.

There are multiple rooms to discover, from the huge dining space to the cosy corners with chairs by the fire. The best part? You have the entirety all to yourself. After the host provides a tour and snippets of the history, you can explore each quaint crevice at your own leisure. Indulging in a royal feast in the dining room is a particular highlight. 

Such is the grandeur of the castle, we can understand why you'd never want to leave. But if you did want to stretch your legs, take a stroll along the beautiful River Tweed, leading to the charming town of Peebles. Here, you'll find welcoming pubs, a fascinating museum and premium restaurants.

Scots & Queens

Unplug from digital distractions at this shepherd’s hut, set on the grounds of a Grade I-listed hall. Location-wise, it’s just over a mile from Greystoke village and 4 miles from the Lake District, making it an ideal base for exploring Cumbria’s unspoilt Eden Valley. Compact yet well-appointed, it’s the perfect bolthole for a couple or solo traveller. There’s a breakfast hamper to get you started and a picnic table by the stream for lunches alfresco. Complimentary logs and charcoal are provided for the fire pit or barbecue, and your host can even help arrange activities like clay pigeon shooting and cycle hire on the wider estate. 

Blueberry Bolthole

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.
