From the welcome pack full of helpful local information to the cereal and snacks provided, and even the child-friendly amenities available for families travelling with little ones, this home ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to hospitality. This home has board games and streaming services to keep everyone entertained. Venture outside, however, and you’ll find plenty more to keep you occupied with the waterside Shore area just minutes from your door, and the city’s most iconic sights like Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle easily reachable by public transport or car.

In Edinburgh, history oozes out of every corner – and this Victorian home has a unique heritage of its own. A former 1800s Victorian ironmonger, this shop used to service the trading ships sailing back and forth from Leith Port to Iceland. Now, it's a cosy and contemporary hideaway in one of the most buzzing parts of the city.

Swapping Victorian allure for sleek mid-century style, the open-plan living space is a relaxed place to chill out and decompress after exploring the hustle and bustle of Old Town. Host Lynda has an incredible eye for design, and there are plenty of spots to snuggle up and get comfortable. Rustle up a meal in the kitchen, followed by a Netflix movie night on the plush blue sofa. When it's time for some shut-eye, drift off to sleep in one of the comfortable and chic bedrooms – both feature the large, original shop windows that flood the space with sunlight.

Although Leith is just outside the much-frequented neighbourhoods in the city centre, don't let that fool you – you'll find great bars and some of Edinburgh's best restaurants right on your doorstep. Here, old shipping warehouses now play host to photo studios, art galleries and delectable eateries, while the waterfront road along the port – aptly called The Shore – is dotted with cafes, pubs and shops. And with buses running directly into the centre taking about fifteen minutes, you'll have easy access to the tourist hotspots, too.

It’s a lived-in space so you can expect homely, personalised decor, and at capacity, two guests will need to share the pull-out bed in the second bedroom that also serves as an extra lounge. There’s also a sofa bed in the main living area for flexible sleeping arrangements, as well as a handy mini-bar here for those looking to unwind after a day of touring the city. Speaking of which, you’ll find Leith Shore's bars and restaurants a five-minute walk away, and the city centre can be easily reached by car or public transport.

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

Grab your own cosy nook right on the Royal Mile – Edinburgh's main artery, ending at the castle. Moments away, you'll find whisky bars serving over 200 different drams, fully kilted pipers, and – in August, anyway – the magical chaos of the Edinburgh Festival. This apartment offers brief respite from all that, kitted out with a flat-screen TV for binge-watching, a generous kitchen corner for preparing tipsy laird pudding and a squishy red leather sofa to eat it on. We love the lighting fixtures in the lounge and bedrooms, a web of black cords and hanging bulbs which cast a soft glow. Matching this are black metal frames on the door, shower, and bed, as well as dining chairs in the living space. Overall, this flat has a warehouse vibe which feels minimalist yet cosy, ideal for coming home to after witnessing a city steeped in history. Wander uphill after your morning coffee and stop in for some brunch on the High Street, just seven minutes away. Keep on heading to the top of this iconic mile to reach Edinburgh Castle. At just a thirteen-minute walk from home, your descent should include a stop at a traditional pub for a dram of whisky or a pint.

At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

From one window you have an unrestricted view of Edinburgh Castle, the iconic fortress that brings inquisitive travellers to the capital. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. It boasts Edinburgh Castle views from the entrance and a private outdoor space, complete with a gas fireplace and sofas. It's the perfect place for pre-theatre drinks or a wee dram at the end of the night. You may even be lucky enough to see one of the fireworks displays light up the sky around the castle.

Inside, it's been freshly renovated by one of Scotland's leading interior designers. A lot of attention to detail has been lavished on this home. We adore the custom wallpaper, designer accessories, plush velvet seating and drapes, as well as the contemporary artworks by Scottish and New York artists. All in all, this creates a sumptuous, five-star boutique suite feel. There’s even a secret extra outdoor room furnished with tartan throws and puffin cushions – the ideal spot for reading a book.

The location is as impressive as this apartment. It's a three-minute stroll to both Princes Street and the Lyceum Theatre, while Usher Hall, which has hosted concerts and events since 1914, is a mere one-minute saunter. No trip to the city would be complete without visiting Edinburgh Castle – it's around ten minutes on foot.

If your trip is centred around some Scottish sightseeing, this home drops you in the heart of the action – fans of the Edinburgh Fringe, it’s perfectly placed for you, too.

We’d also be remiss not to mention the wonderful view of the castle, which can be reached in ten minutes on foot. Found on a charming cobbled lane in the middle of Edinburgh's famous New Town, this apartment in a listed Georgian building has way more going for it other than its prime spot on the map. Inside, the palette of greys, blacks and dark wood give the interior the sort of character and warmth you envision from a home in the Scottish capital. Two large sash windows in the living space invite in natural light and there are several lavish touches in the interior design, from the ornate furnishings and the patterned wallpaper to the subway tile bathroom. There's a wide selection of restaurants to be found on the neighbouring Queen Street and George Street, while lots of the city's most famous attractions can be easily reached on foot — Edinburgh Castle takes just under a quarter of an hour, for instance.

From the famous Royal Mile to the fortress of Edinburgh Castle, one thing's for absolutely certain – you'll never be short of things to see and do.

The home itself is a splendourful hub flush with all things luxurious. Beautiful antique furnishings add character, meanwhile the peppering of gold–framed artworks sprinkle an extra dusting of splendour. The colour scheme is a medley or warm reds and rich browns and in the master bathroom, traditional black and white floor tiles instantly draw the eye. We particularly love the living area with its brown leather chaise sofa and Persian rug. Complete with an ancient fireplace at its heart, there's also a circular alcove and desk to one side, and a flatscreen television. Quite frankly, we couldn't think of a more elegant spot to watch a movie!

This home will leave you feeling like lord of the manor, but as tempting as it may be to stay within the walls of your royal headquarters, with so much to explore – and all within easy reach – be sure to peel yourself away from your plush pad and traverse.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

It's quite fitting that this elegant studio apartment with its beautiful painted mural is close to the Scottish National Gallery and Scottish Gallery of Modern Art (both are an eight-minute stroll away). There's more culture to be had at the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum on the Mound, eleven minutes on foot. Edinburgh Castle, St James Quarter, the Scott Monument, and St Giles' Cathedral are all within a fifteen-minute or less wander too. Edinburgh International Conference Centre, on the other hand, is just a three-minute walk, and the University of Edinburgh, the Old Town and the Royal Mile are all under a twenty-five-minute amble, while there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby for refreshments.

We love this architect-designed home, furnished with luxury BoConcept furniture. Relax with your family and friends on the huge sofa, then whip up a full Scottish breakfast in the stylish kitchen. It’s not often we mention an extractor fan, but the one here is quite funky. There’s a homely vibe with the mix of art and plants too. On warm summer days, unwind in the enclosed garden and have a picnic on the grass.

Or head out to explore the delights of Edinburgh, while the Queen’s official Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is just a ten-minute amble.
