From the famous Royal Mile to the fortress of Edinburgh Castle, one thing's for absolutely certain – you'll never be short of things to see and do.

The home itself is a splendourful hub flush with all things luxurious. Beautiful antique furnishings add character, meanwhile the peppering of gold–framed artworks sprinkle an extra dusting of splendour. The colour scheme is a medley or warm reds and rich browns and in the master bathroom, traditional black and white floor tiles instantly draw the eye. We particularly love the living area with its brown leather chaise sofa and Persian rug. Complete with an ancient fireplace at its heart, there's also a circular alcove and desk to one side, and a flatscreen television. Quite frankly, we couldn't think of a more elegant spot to watch a movie!

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

Housed in a former brewery from the 1800s, this cool home nods to its past while dazzling with modern comforts and contemporary style. A monochrome palette gives it a sleek look, with wood and leather accents giving it a characterful industrial edge. We love the Crittall doors in the living room that lead to a beautifully dressed bed, behind which a sketch-style mural hints at the home’s heritage. When you’re not kicking back on the sofa with a cold beer, catching up on work at the desk or enjoying luxurious soaks under the rainfall shower, go out and explore your surroundings. Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

Found on a charming cobbled lane in the middle of Edinburgh's famous New Town, this apartment in a listed Georgian building has way more going for it other than its prime spot on the map. Inside, the palette of greys, blacks and dark wood give the interior the sort of character and warmth you envision from a home in the Scottish capital. Two large sash windows in the living space invite in natural light and there are several lavish touches in the interior design, from the ornate furnishings and the patterned wallpaper to the subway tile bathroom. There's a wide selection of restaurants to be found on the neighbouring Queen Street and George Street, while lots of the city's most famous attractions can be easily reached on foot — Edinburgh Castle takes just under a quarter of an hour, for instance.


A Sandstone Stay

Monochrome style meets Edinburgh's history in this city centre apartment, nestled on one of the city's most famous streets; George Street. The flat pays tribute to city icons such as Sean Connery and Calton Hill with a coherent collection of black-and-white prints lining the living area's walls. Original feature fireplaces in the bedroom, a chandelier in the living room, and cornicing like icing on a cake hark back to the days when horse and carriage would clatter along the wide boulevard below. George Street has its own rich history, originally built as "the principal street" of the New Town. The neighbouring townhouses are architectural marvels. And just six minutes from the edge of this ancient parkland, this modern home is a rather delightful contrast. The interiors are very industrial, but you’ll still find little touches of luxury. We love the lighting fixtures in the lounge and bedrooms, a web of black cords and hanging bulbs which cast a soft glow. Matching this are black metal frames on the door, shower, and bed, as well as dining chairs in the living space. Overall, this flat has a warehouse vibe which feels minimalist yet cosy, ideal for coming home to after witnessing a city steeped in history. Wander uphill after your morning coffee and stop in for some brunch on the High Street, just seven minutes away. Keep on heading to the top of this iconic mile to reach Edinburgh Castle. At just a thirteen-minute walk from home, your descent should include a stop at a traditional pub for a dram of whisky or a pint.

All in all, this creates a sumptuous, five-star boutique suite feel. There’s even a secret extra outdoor room furnished with tartan throws and puffin cushions – the ideal spot for reading a book.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

At the eastern end of the famous Royal Mile, you’ll find this modern apartment taking residence in an old brewery. The location is fabulous – situated near the top of the Royal Mile, it's just over a five-minute walk to Edinburgh Castle. It's the same walking distance to The Scotch Whisky Experience, where you can discover the history of Scotland's national drink. Just over a fifteen-minute stroll, on the other hand, will take you to the Scottish Parliament building and the majestic Palace of Holyroodhouse. There's so much on your doorstep you'll need to book another stay to fit it all in.

Cleverly designed with a Scandinavian aesthetic in mind, we love how airy and light the space feels with pale oak floors and giant windows providing a generous dose of natural daylight. It's a refreshing contrast to the winding, historic streets outside.

Spill out in the comfortable living area with a freshly brewed coffee – or a nip of whisky - depending on the hour. There's Netflix and Amazon Prime for some downtime, or take a flick through the home's copy of Haarkon Adventures for some travel-inspo. Though we doubt you'll need it with so much waiting on your doorstep. 

Get off to a flying start at the National Museum just across the street, famed for its natural history wonders. Then walk in the footsteps of Scotland's ancient kings and queens at Edinburgh Castle (six minutes on foot). 

And when it's time to escape the crowds for a while, head to Edinburgh's volcano, Arthur's Seat (forty minutes on foot), for the very best views over the city – it's worth the hike.

Sometimes you spot a grand-looking, historic building and think the interior could never live up to the impressive facade. That couldn’t be further from the truth for this apartment in Edinburgh’s New Town. We love visiting Edinburgh, with its history, culture and abundance of great dining-out options. This apartment makes for an excellent home-from-home for friends or family visiting the city. It can be found outside of the centre, close to Gorgie, and has superb transport links. 

The bus stop is two minutes away, and it takes just nineteen minutes to reach Princes Street. From there you can explore Edinburgh’s Old and New Town, visiting galleries and shopping. There’s plenty to see and do closer to home too, with the Saughton Rose Gardens a seven-minute walk away, and the Water of Leith eight minutes away on foot. Sports fans will enjoy the proximity to Tynecastle – home of the Hearts – and easy access to Murrayfield. 

The apartment is bright, warm and welcoming. The dining table is ideal for sharing meals together, and playing board games on cosy nights in. We love the living area, which is comfortable and stylish. This is exactly the kind of apartment you want to call home when visiting a new city. 


Exploring Edinburgh

This top floor apartment on historic George Street has the best seat in the house, and we're not just talking about the cow print armchair. From one window you have an unrestricted view of Edinburgh Castle, the iconic fortress that brings inquisitive travellers to the capital. From another, the port district of Leith, and the beaches Edinburgh is not necessarily famous for, but definitely should be. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. Breakfasting below the huge, arched window in the sunlight is another big plus. Heading out, the New Town is on your doorstep and with it, the buzz of a city you'll never want to leave.

Sea And Planets

It's quite fitting that this elegant studio apartment with its beautiful painted mural is close to the Scottish National Gallery and Scottish Gallery of Modern Art (both are an eight-minute stroll away). There's more culture to be had at the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum on the Mound, eleven minutes on foot. Edinburgh Castle, St James Quarter, the Scott Monument, and St Giles' Cathedral are all within a fifteen-minute or less wander too. Edinburgh International Conference Centre, on the other hand, is just a three-minute walk, and the University of Edinburgh, the Old Town and the Royal Mile are all under a twenty-five-minute amble, while there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby for refreshments.

After a busy day of sightseeing, take a seat on one of the comfy chairs and admire the artwork with a wee dram. Or get some rest in the bedroom with its dramatic dark navy-hued wood panelling. We love the character features in this apartment, such as the high ceilings, cornices, sash windows and shutters. After you've put your feet up for a while, get ready in the bathroom with its terrazzo-effect tiling and head to bed or if you're anything like us, sample the restaurants and bars – well, they're close by, and it would be rude not to.
