New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. This two-bedroom apartment in central St Andrews boasts a period exterior, fashionable interiors and a private patio and garden. Although comfortable and stylish (there’s even a log fire), the living room lacks a proper dining table (it’s really more of a coffee table). No more than a 5-minute walk from the University and 12th-century cathedral, it’s an excellent base from which to explore this seaside town. The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

Weather permitting, we also highly recommend spending some time in the private decking area. Beyond this rural haven, it’s just a short drive to Beadnell and Newton, as well as the historic castles, fishing villages and beaches stretching along the coast.

History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.
