After the host provides a tour and snippets of the history, you can explore each quaint crevice at your own leisure. Indulging in a royal feast in the dining room is a particular highlight. 

Such is the grandeur of the castle, we can understand why you'd never want to leave. But if you did want to stretch your legs, take a stroll along the beautiful River Tweed, leading to the charming town of Peebles. Here, you'll find welcoming pubs, a fascinating museum and premium restaurants.

Scots & Queens

Escape to the rural idyll of farmhouse life at this cosy cottage in the Lauderdale Hills. It’s on a working farm, where the sheep have been tended to by the same family for generations and you can ramble across hilltops and country lanes straight from your doorstep. Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. The living room is a cosy spot in twilight pink, with an ornamental fireplace. Spacious, pastel bedrooms in the eaves are the perfect end to a day in the countryside.   

Flock Of Sheep

Castaway and escape the outside world at this picture-perfect period cottage squirrelled away on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Cut off twice daily from the mainland with the fast-moving tides of the North Sea, the island has a truly magical feel. Spend your days spotting seals sunning themselves on the coastline or bobbing through the waters. Stretch your legs with bracing walks along the vast unspoilt sandy shores – Coves Haven beach on the northern side of Holy Island is gloriously secluded. And soak up the historical splendour of the circa. 1550 Lindisfarne Castle rising from the rock face.

When it's time to rest up at home, the charms of this cottage are hard to resist, with a wood-burning stove to nestle up beside and exposed beams and stonework bringing all the period allure. When thoughts turn to food, there's everything you could need to rustle up a bite to eat in the shaker-style kitchen – or skip cooking and head to the local pub, just a few minute's walk from your door. 

When it's time to say adieu, leaving this island haven is easier than you'd think. Time the tides right, and you'll be over the causeway and back on dry land in no time – the main Northumberland coast is just a few miles away.

The Island Home

This bright apartment is the ideal base for exploring the west of Scotland and its stunning landscapes. Located on a pretty estate in the town of Blanefield, it provides easy access to the great outdoors, and has space for your whole group to relax in style between adventures. 

The chic living space has pistachio green sofas where you can stretch out and watch a great movie to unwind at the end of a busy day. Head into the kitchen, and you'll find everything you need to cook up some hearty fare to enjoy in the stylish dining area – make sure you pause to admire the quirky unicorn wallpaper. There's even some outdoor space for you to enjoy – pour a dram of whiskey to sip on the balcony or wander through the shared gardens and admire the little loch. 

The West Highland Way, Scotland's most famous walk, is only ten minutes away from your front door, so hikers can be first to hit the trail in the morning. There are also riding stables under ten minutes away on foot, a range of local shops and cafés, and Glengoyne Distillery is a five-minute drive away. And, if you want to explore further afield then you're in the perfect location – Glasgow and Stirling are both within driving distance. 

Golden Unicorn

Overlooking North Inch Park and the River Tay, this classic apartment sits in a handsome, Georgian building. High ceilings, detailed cornicing and big sash windows all combine to create the feeling of stepping back into the 19th century inside. The grand entrance hall with old maps on the wall sets the tone of tradition and opulence. Heading through to the living room you’re met with park views and a drawing room feel from Persian rugs and plush sofas with faux fur throws. The dine-in kitchen is more than big enough to accommodate the bustle of family breakfast time, and there’s dining for the whole group at the long table. We particularly love the quirky design touches in the bedrooms – a headboard depicting a bucolic etching and a sparkling chandelier in the smallest bedroom. At the end of the day, the claw-footed tub in the main bathroom beckons for a long soak. You’re in the centre of Perth here, where a few steps sees you following the River Tay walk out into the countryside if you wish. You’re also less than two minutes from local pubs with live folk music, restaurants serving haggis, neeps and tatties, and local art galleries and museums a-plenty.

Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Alternatively, you could drive thirty minutes to Whiteadder Watersports Centre for sailing, kayaking and SUP sessions, or visit the timeless city of Edinburgh, a forty-mile drive away.

Farrier's Cottage

Rising above Loch Lomond like a dazzling glass mirage, this extraordinary home is truly one of a kind. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and bi-folding doors dominate its front, offering unobstructed views of the Loch and its stunning surroundings. With its own private miniature beach, this truly is a Highlands haven. With only forty-six designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the country, you can make your stay truly special by staying within one of these striking landscapes. The Northumberland Coast is home to 14th-century castles, vast sandy beaches, rare wildlife, and dramatic views. And in the aptly named Seahouses, this quaint, coastal settlement is home to this gorgeous abode. Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. But if you'd rather venture out, there's a dog-friendly pub just over the road, while the centre of Seahouses with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk from your front door.

Puffin's Beak

Only 20 miles from Edinburgh, this lodge is nestled on the grounds of a 16th-century tower. Views stretch across the countryside in every direction, from the Lammermuir Hills in the south to Edinburgh Castle in the east. The patio is the biggest draw – nothing beats an alfresco Old Fashioned while admiring the castle – but the interiors are just as handsome. We love the bright living area and panoramic window seats in the bedrooms. And, of course, the location will be a big hit with nature buffs. Ambles around a private loch, hikes along the John Muir Way, on-site fly fishing, and clay shooting are just some of the activities on offer.

A Scottish Treasure

This two-bedroom apartment in central St Andrews boasts a period exterior, fashionable interiors and a private patio and garden. Although comfortable and stylish (there’s even a log fire), the living room lacks a proper dining table (it’s really more of a coffee table). No more than a 5-minute walk from the University and 12th-century cathedral, it’s an excellent base from which to explore this seaside town. Golf lovers will delight in its proximity to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.
