Set within a Victorian villa, this Clan Fraser inspired apartment is anything but twee. Instead, the place is fresh and contemporary, with subtle nods of tartan among the swanky finishes. The living space is the heart of the home, with rich blues and brushed gold adding an opulent flourish. There’s a dining table for home-cooked haggis, neeps and tatties and a gorgeous velvet sofa for reclining with a snifter of Scotch. Just when you thought it couldn’t be plusher, 800 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets dress impossibly comfortable beds. And that’s without mentioning the freestanding copper tub in the first bedroom. Outside, a tidy patio lets you make the most of sunny days – especially when accompanied with treats from the nearby bakery. After a five-minute stroll to the picturesque River Ness, cross the bridge into the heart of Inverness for the red sandstone castle, Victorian Market and an impressive selection of bars and restaurants.

From the outside, this Victorian home looks as quaint as quaint can be, but inside, guests will find an apartment that mixes vintage and modern aspects with considerable dexterity. In the living room, a large bay window floods the space with natural daylight, which dances nicely off the wooden floors and walls painted in muted grey. The Persian rug and deep blue sofa add some bold splashes of colour. Elsewhere, we're big fans of the gleaming copper bathtub in the master bathroom that promises to be as comfortable as it is handsome. Off the same room, there's access to a cute terrace with alfresco seating — yes, it's Scotland, but put on a jumper and enjoy the dramatic sunsets that this corner of the country enjoys. The home's only an eight-minute walk from the River Ness and Inverness's town centre, which includes a castle and an art gallery. Alternatively, if you're feeling more active, Cairngorms National Park takes around half an hour to reach in the car.

This home has been creating a bit of a buzz, and for all the right reasons. It's been featured by the BBC, and is a shining example of Scottish hospitality in the city of Inverness. Step inside, and you'll find a cosy space with plenty of seating, ideal for flopping down with a glass of whisky at the end of a long day exploring. The hosts have put great thought into every aspect of this home, from the luxury toiletries to the Bose speaker systems in every bedroom and the extra-large bathtub where you can soak in perfect peace. And, the hosts try to buy local wherever possible – once you've tried a cup of the locally-roasted coffee along with a freshly-baked slice of shortbread, you'll understand why. You're just a few steps away from the banks of the River Ness, and Inverness Castle is less than five minutes away from your front door, along with a range of shops and restaurants in the city centre. Jump in the car, and it takes twenty-five minutes to reach world-famous Loch Ness for some monster-spotting. Even if you don't spy Nessie, you can hop on one of the boat tours to sail along the water, or hit one of the nearby walking trails for an invigorating hike through the Highland landscapes.

Covering an impressive 1800 acres of moorland just for hiking, the sheer scale of the estate is enough to make it feel majestic without the towering rise of the baronial-style home itself. When both come into view together on the winding drive up to the house, it’s breathtaking. And stepping into the home is a similar experience – take in the mix of chandeliers, fireplaces, and four poster beds. It’s stately, but with plenty of opportunity for relaxation. Whether that’s sinking into the sofa after stoking the fireplace, or wrapping up and walking the moors on a crisp morning. Perhaps it’s luxuriating in a bubble bath with a glass of prosecco, or cooking up a storm in the well-equipped kitchen. Regardless, this home is willing to give whatever you need to take away from your holiday. 

Wander down to Dunnet Bay and the village, but whatever you do, don’t forget to stop off at the world-famous Rock Rose gin distillery. For a pub lunch, you’ll find Northern Sand more than happy to oblige.

Watch mist dissipate, clouds roll across the sky to cast shadows on the loch, and when the infamous Scottish weather drives you inside, well, you’ll still have floor-to-ceiling windows through which to keep that connection with the rugged beauty outside. 

With marble, wood, texture, and a lot of detail, this home not only feels modern, but it somehow retains the charm of a log cabin, albeit more luxurious, and the warmth that comes with it, making this feel like a home away from home. Spend wet days stretched out on the sofa with cocoa in hand, or take full advantage of the board games on offer here and have yourself a bit of friendly competition. 

When the rest of the group wander off to do their own thing after a lunch enjoyed at the heavy timber dining table – we suggest sourdough topped with black pudding, cherry tomatoes, vinegar and black pepper – you can claim the window bench for a reading nook or retreat upstairs for a luxurious bubble bath with views of the loch. 

Take advantage of sunny days by exploring the area and find the Ardessie Falls only a short walk away. Stop off at the pancake tearoom or drive about fifteen minutes away to dine at the Ocean View Hotel. One of Scotaland’s famous hidden beaches, Gunaird Bay, is also at the end of a fifteen-minute drive.

Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Fields stretch before you (check out the view from the balcony), yet it’s just three miles to the charming market town of Dunkeld to stock up on supplies and try the local cafes. It’s also a walker and mountain biker’s paradise around these parts – this home has heated bike storage and a boot room. The wood-burner in the living room can warm up frozen toes and the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need to fuel up, post-walk. Your host is in the neighbouring farmhouse should you need anything.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Reclaim the Hills

Cosy and charming, this home in the Cairngorms National Park is ideal for nature lovers. It looks out over the River Don, where you can fish for trout, and is in a great location for hill walking. It’s a former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century so if you’re looking for glitz and glam, this isn’t the home for you. That said, it’s been recently renovated and has all the contemporary comfort you might wish for. Your four-legged friends can even join you – this is a real home-from-home.
