Spend your days in the private hot tub or unwinding by the outdoor fireplace – just the spot as the stars break out above. With landscaped grounds, you can stroll in the fresh air to your heart’s content – or for a change of scenery, we recommend hiking the Pentland Hills instead. 

Graceful Grove

Looking for a Scottish coastal retreat just seconds from the beach? Then this immaculately presented apartment in the scenic coastal town of North Berwick, East Lothian could be the perfect spot. Defying yawnsome coastal pastiche (there’s not a wooden boat or anchor in sight) in favour of cool, fresh monochromes and sparkling white bathrooms, this is relaxed, beachside living at its best. Being situated on the ground floor, there's a charming, covered terrace area for two just off the master bedroom, leading onto a sunny shared garden. The living room with a crackling log fire (and underfloor heating to keep things extra toasty in winter months) is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of taking in the sights and sounds of the area. And you’re well-placed to do so here. The sweeping sandy beach is just at the end of the street, literally thirty seconds away. The vibrant high street with cosy pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk away. And there are coastal walks aplenty and a golf course commanding breath-taking sea views within easy reach. Locations don’t come much better than this.

Everything is A-OK

Go back in time to this Georgian country house, only 9 miles from the iconic Alnwick Castle and Garden. As part of a private estate, you'll find lush grounds, a lily pond, and outdoor seating spots. Travelling with kids? There's baby equipment, toys, and old-fashioned lawn games to try out during the summer. Indoors, the characterful rooms are full of authentic features, including a log fire and flagstone flooring. Rothbury awaits 6 miles away, well known for its bakery and charming high-street amenities.

The Golden Chest

Set in the dramatic countryside of Perthshire, where the Scottish highlands begin, this home is the ultimate rural retreat. It’s all fun and games on the ground floor where a hot tub sits in a turret, surrounded by windows looking out over the wilderness. There’s a games room and family snug, with a snooker table, dartboard, big TV and drinks trolley. Out the back door, the garden has a sunken trampoline, swing sets and plenty of room for the kids to run around. Up on the next floor, you can get social in the dine-in kitchen. A second seating area with cosy armchairs and a collection of books can be a sous chef’s hang-out. Views from the windows up here stretch all the way to Ben Vorlich in the distance. Bedrooms are split between the second and third floor, and bagging the master means sleeping sound in a four-poster bed. This place is made for activities, and its position on a holiday estate means your host can organise all kinds of experiences like mini highland games, a private chef and cocktail-making classes. 

Highland Games

Leading a long and rich course of history, this 18th-century mansion boasts stunning Georgian architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding East and West Lomond Hills. With vast grounds and interiors a striking mix of traditional and modern aesthetics, there's something for everyone at this extravagant home.

Watch the sun rise and set over the picturesque scenery, and experience local wildlife and lush greenery in the Victorian walled garden and private grounds. Play a game of croquet, and explore the orchard and fruit garden, teeming with life and colour. Discover the beauty of Fife and its surrounding areas with ease by car, filling your days with historical sites and nature trails filled with folklore and wonder.

You'll experience true luxury in this beautiful manor, gathering around your own private bar and taking advantage of the quality pool table. Gather round the main fireplace in the drawing room, or draw yourself a hot bath in one of the bathtubs and let your worries drift away. With exquisite decoration in every room and an air of sophisticated decadence about the place, you'll feel like a true noble during your stay.

Pheasant Grove

With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

Cherry Cask

In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800. 

In terms of location, you’re in the East Lothian countryside, a five-minute drive from the seaside town of Musselburgh where you’ll find a beach and golf course. Edinburgh’s historic centre is just a twenty-minute drive away too. 

Doorway To Elphame

A magical tower, rising some 48ft above the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, this unique home is just as incredible inside as it looks. Its 9ft thick stone walls have stood the test of time since 1450 – although you may notice a few musket ball holes in the exterior. Packed with history and centuries of stories – many of which the estate manager will tell you on arrival – this home is an absolute gem by the banks of the River Annan. Exploring the castle for the first time is a wonderful experience, with a wealth of turrets, nooks and staircases to discover. The showstopper here is the Great Hall, with a high, arching ceiling and a Renaissance fireplace so huge you walk inside it. Like the rest of the castle, it's dressed with antique furniture and eclectic art collected over many years by the owners. Two long sofas make for a fabulous space to relax with family and friends and, in the evening, you can light the fire and play music from the gallery above. Elsewhere there's a fine library, a basement playroom and a large kitchen with its own casual dining space and a fireplace. Formal dinners can be held in the dining room – and perhaps if you don't feel like cooking, you could ask the host to arrange a private chef. On the top floors, bedrooms are romantic and impressive. We particularly love the huge antique four-poster in one room and the bed built into a cosy alcove in another. Outside there are four acres to explore, including a lake, a medieval-style topiary garden and a terrace for sipping drinks together on a summer evening. Perfect for a large group celebrating something special, this is an enchanting and memorable place to stay, just a short drive from the town of Lockerbie. And did we mention there's a famous ghost story here? Old ‘Dunty’ Porteous hasn't bothered visitors for decades but it makes for a fun tale – be sure to ask the staff about him. 

Rapunzel's Rest

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Failing that, a long soak in the bathtub will do the trick. When the weather is favourable, you can take full advantage of the home's front garden surrounded by a stone wall, which has a pretty view of Scottish hillsides and a barbecue for those bursts of balmy weather.

Groom's Bell

This stunning estate sits amid 450 acres of beautiful parkland and boasts glorious views of the Trossachs. It’s in the heart of Scotland, less than an hour from Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Perth, and a fifteen-minute walk to the village of Kippen. You’ll be perfectly placed to explore the Great Outdoors, with excellent hiking and golfing nearby, and garden games to play. We love the orangery, the perfect spot for languid breakfasts after late nights of whisky tasting in the games room. When you need to unwind, you can chill out in the hot tub or curl up in the library with a book. This is an excellent choice for a family retreat or a catch-up with friends – you’ll never want to leave. 

The Ancient Yew

Located in the prestigious Kings Park area of Stirling and occupying the entire ground floor of a sandstone period villa, this smart apartment is ticking all our boxes. A great option for friends or family sharing, the generous Victorian-era proportions of the bedrooms really show here, and there’s heaps of space to spill out in the free-flowing living and dining set-up, which leads outside onto a private patio with leafy green views. Location-wise, there’s plenty to explore on foot in and around Striling – starting with the mighty castle. Here to explore other central Scotland hotspots? Gillies Hill, the Trossachs and Edinburgh are all an easy drive away.

Sweet Morning

Known locally as the Kingdom of Fife, this east coast region of Scotland is awash with historic monuments, ancient towns, sweeping beaches, and fresh sea air. While its heritage speaks volumes, there are of course plenty of built-up areas with everything a modern visitor could need.

Kinghorn offers pubs, traditional chippies, a golf course, and cute cafés, but the standout feature is the huge town hall. This Tudor-Gothic style building was built in 1826, with its ground floors having played the role of council chambers and even a prison. Secret stairways and enormous windows let you admire views of Kinghorn Beach, a seven-minute walk away. But why are we focusing solely on this historic landmark? Well, because this is your home. 

Your apartments are set over the first and second floors, with jaw-dropping, period interiors which feel regal, luxurious, and opulent. Rich red fabrics, elegant cornicing, chandeliers, solid marble fireplaces, antique furniture, gilded mirror frames – we could go on. There’s even a private walled garden at the back, where you can sit out under the stars sipping whisky and looking out over your very own kingdom.
