In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800. 

In terms of location, you’re in the East Lothian countryside, a five-minute drive from the seaside town of Musselburgh where you’ll find a beach and golf course. Edinburgh’s historic centre is just a twenty-minute drive away too.

On the outside, this 18th-century barn conversion is rustic as can be. But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time.

With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

There are three reception areas, a games room and a sweet little orangery. Outside, you'll find a wonderful garden for summer days and there is private parking available for one car on the drive. Plus, it’s extremely well-connected with the nearest bus stop just a five-minute walk away – making it easy to explore central Edinburgh.

Your apartments are set over the first and second floors, with jaw-dropping, period interiors which feel regal, luxurious, and opulent. Rich red fabrics, elegant cornicing, chandeliers, solid marble fireplaces, antique furniture, gilded mirror frames – we could go on. Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. The living room is a cosy spot in twilight pink, with an ornamental fireplace. Spacious, pastel bedrooms in the eaves are the perfect end to a day in the countryside.

Meet Me On The Green

New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

Hidden away on a lovely farm estate, this stunning stone cottage offers all the charm of a country retreat combined with the convenience of all the mod cons. On cool nights, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play board games by firelight or stream your favourite films as you sink into the sofa. The patio area of the private walled garden is the perfect place to sip coffee out of the wind in the morning and glasses of wine in the afternoon when the sun emerges from behind the building and warms the stones. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Alternatively, you could drive thirty minutes to Whiteadder Watersports Centre for sailing, kayaking and SUP sessions, or visit the timeless city of Edinburgh, a forty-mile drive away.

Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

Nestled within Fife's Balcarres Estate, surrounded by some of Scotland's finest countryside, this historical home awaits. Dating back to the late 1800s, the redbrick facade and Jacobean style are truly charming, and many original features are still intact. Sitting high on a hilltop overlooking Lauderdale, this cottage escape is in the blissfully quiet lowland countryside. Stepping outside, you’ll hear is the faint bleat of sheep from the farm nearby and cheep of birds in the ancient trees surrounding the cottage. Once a shepherd’s cottage, the old stone walls whisper of history, but inside it’s been restored to cosy modernity. A living room in rich forest green invites you to leave your wellies by the door and put your feet up at the end of the day. The country-style kitchen has everything you need to cook yourself, and there’s a restaurant at Carfraemill Hotel, a three-minute drive or twenty-minute walk away. The idyllic village of Lauder is an eight-minute drive away where you’ll find local galleries, coffee shops and a village deli, or make the forty-minute drive to Edinburgh for a day in the city.

Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

Once Upon a Fairytale

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded.
