Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Nestled in Kingussie within the Cairngorms National Park, this charming home is perfect for large group getaways in the Scottish Highlands. Entertainment abounds in the local area – visit the Highland Folk Museum for an insight into local history, peruse the art on display at the Iona Gallery, take a whiskey distillery tour at nearby Dalwhinnie, or visit the Highland Wildlife Park, unbridled fun for all the family. However you spend your days, memorable moments are guaranteed.

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Reclaim the Hills

Situated on a working farm and sporting estate in Perthshire, this refurbished Victorian home is a great option for larger groups wanting to explore the Big Tree Country. Due to its elevated position, you'll get stunning panoramic views across Aberfeldy, Ben Lawers, and the surrounding hills. There's a cinema and games room to enjoy here, as well as a private hot tub to soak in as the sun goes down. The large fenced garden has plenty of outdoor seating, as well as BBQ facilities for alfresco dining in the warmer months – and a fire pit for cooler evenings. We suggest hiring a car so you can discover the dramatic landscape of this county with ease.

Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.
