Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

If you’re after something seriously special for a group stay, this Perthshire Renaissance-style mansion could be it. Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded. Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.

And, if you want to explore further afield then you're in the perfect location – Glasgow and Stirling are both within driving distance.

Looking for grandeur? This historic estate in the heart of the Scottish countryside is a real showstopper. There's a large dining hall to seat thirty-two with a piano in the corner, a grand staircase that'll make the perfect backdrop for holiday photos, and bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms that overlook the River Tay. One of the bedrooms even comes with its own private drawing room. Outside, the gardens include ponds, wildflowers, and centuries-old oak and yew trees – an abundance of space to wander and spot local wildlife. Nestled in the Perthshire landscape, you'll find the historic city of Perth a short drive away, and a wide range of trails and hikes to explore.

This former railway lodge with a wood-burning stove and cottage garden couldn't be more charming if it tried. A home of this age does come with its compromises. The living room and twin bedroom are both on the snug side, and the only bathroom is a little dated. It's also worth noting that the Strathspey Steam Railway runs daily just fifteen metres from your door – you'll hear it before you see it. But we think this only adds to the experience of staying here. Location-wise, there's a café and food store within walking distance, and all the highland must-sees, including Aviemore, Loch Morlich, and the Cairngorms National Park, are all just a short drive away.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

Location-wise, there’s plenty to explore on foot in and around Striling – starting with the mighty castle. Here to explore other central Scotland hotspots? Gillies Hill, the Trossachs and Edinburgh are all an easy drive away.

Cosy and charming, this home in the Cairngorms National Park is ideal for nature lovers. It looks out over the River Don, where you can fish for trout, and is in a great location for hill walking. It’s a former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century so if you’re looking for glitz and glam, this isn’t the home for you. That said, it’s been recently renovated and has all the contemporary comfort you might wish for. Your four-legged friends can even join you – this is a real home-from-home.

This two-bedroom apartment in central St Andrews boasts a period exterior, fashionable interiors and a private patio and garden. Although comfortable and stylish (there’s even a log fire), the living room lacks a proper dining table (it’s really more of a coffee table). No more than a 5-minute walk from the University and 12th-century cathedral, it’s an excellent base from which to explore this seaside town. Golf lovers will delight in its proximity to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.

It's right next to Newtonmore Station, so while noise is likely, transport links to Glasgow and Inverness are literally on your doorstep. The Wildcat Trail is just 150 metres away, though Netwonmore is also home to pubs, shops, and museums.
