Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Failing that, a long soak in the bathtub will do the trick. When the weather is favourable, you can take full advantage of the home's front garden surrounded by a stone wall, which has a pretty view of Scottish hillsides and a barbecue for those bursts of balmy weather.

We imagine you’ll want to spend the majority of your time walking the local trails across the Cheviot Hills and ambling along the River Eden, though if you’d like to practice your swing, the Kelso Golf Club is a short drive away too. The cosy bedrooms, with their minimal and homey designs, beckon you into restful sleep so you can wake up refreshed, ready for a day at the Kelso Market. 

On cool nights, cook up some family favourites in the country-style kitchen, then cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play a few games of cards by firelight – a glass of wine wouldn’t go amiss here. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home alternatively, you could make the drive to the forty-minute drive to Tweedmouth for a day on the sands.

Enjoy a moment of stillness as hare forage in the undergrowth and swallows swoop overhead before treating yourself to a long soak in the private hot tub. 

When you’re ready to explore, a six-minute drive places you in the market town of Kelso. Browse the locally owned shops, relax with a coffee in a quaint cafe and brush up on your history knowledge at Floors Cafe. If you’d like to expend some energy, embark on a hike to Roxburgh – the walk begins at Kelso Abbey and takes around an hour and twenty minutes. 

Head back to your abode in the early evening for a tasty supper rustled up at the kitchenette followed by a mug of hot chocolate in front of the wood-burning stove.

A beautiful stay on the Scottish border awaits you at this quaint cottage. We absolutely love the hygge vibes that run throughout, with a neutral colour scheme scattered with touches of bright colour, together with elegant decor and comfy soft furnishings to make the home feel special. The dining area makes for a great place for a board game and beers in the evenings, while the lounge area features a log-burner fireplace so you can get cosy when the winter chill sets in. But the star of the show is in the outdoor areas – the wood-fired hot tub is great for stargazing on clear nights, while the hanging loungers are ideal if you’re after a napping spot surrounded by nature. There’s even a sunflower field that offers some idyllic photo opportunities in the summer months.

When you want to get out and explore, you’ll find loads of countryside hikes all around you, with miles of green fields to roam in. The pretty Scottish border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is also just a short drive away for when you want to find friendly cafes, welcoming pubs and wonderful restaurants.

This Grade II-listed cottage sits on the grounds of a countryside estate in the heart of rural Northumberland, with Berwick Upon Tweed and the Scottish Borders on your doorstep. Despite the age of the building, inside, the home is equipped with all the mod cons, including reliable wi-fi. The lounge is bright and beautiful, with an atmospheric open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need to whip up family feasts, while the quaint bedrooms have beautiful antique furniture and lovely artwork, and the twin room boasts an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Explore the surrounding area, and you'll discover several nearby pubs and an excellent restaurant within a few miles of the lodge. Why not forego the need for a designated driver and walk there for a hearty pub lunch before rambling home and kicking off your boots in the utility room, and settling in by the fire. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, twenty miles away, or Bamburgh Castle, another six miles down the coast. Alternatively, visit Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town is a fifteen-minute drive away.

A stone’s throw from the border, this eco-friendly, wood-clad home sits in the middle of the countryside. It’s on an organic farm, where the sunflower harvest is a sight to behold in summer and autumn. This place has been set up with a country escape in mind, but the market town of Kelso is a short drive away if you want to stock up on supplies, stop for lunch or perhaps visit the stunning stately home of Floors Castle.

From the wild meadow garden, you’ve got a view of the Tweed Valley and Cheviot Hills. Lounge chairs have been set up to maximise your enjoyment. A wood-fired hot tub to the side of the cabin is the perfect spot to end the day, preferably with something bubbly in hand. Inside, it’s all about hygge vibes with a wood-burning stove at the heart of the living room and a huge, L-shaped sofa to snuggle up on. A Scandi-chic dining table sits by the wall of glass, looking out over the valley and hills and the welcome pack with local porridge oats is a nice touch. Both bedrooms enjoy direct access to the deck outside, so you can wake up with a breath of fresh, country air every morning.

Right in the heart of the village of Otterburn, this cosy and rather stylish home is perfect if you're keen to explore this beautiful area. On the banks of the River Rede, it's known for its local pubs and restaurants – as well as its proximity to the Northumberland National Park. Here the hiking is some of the best in the country and you're likely to spot red squirrels and deer. 

Inside, it's been put together with a great deal of design flair. The comfortable living room feels like home the minute you step inside, with navy blue walls, an imposing stone fireplace and warm wood floors. There's a squashy, L-shaped sofa for evenings in front of the log burner and some quirky and cool decor, while the kitchen is modern and practical.

But it's the bedrooms that steal the show here, with supremely comfortable beds and contemporary colour schemes. And we just love the pretty bathroom and its sloping ceiling and statement tiles.

You'll have outside space too, thanks to a private garden with a deck, but if you fancy an evening meal at the village instead, it's just a stroll away.

Using the original raw materials of stone and wood to echo its heritage, and yet keeping things sleek and sophisticated with plenty of contemporary touches, the ground-floor sunroom is perhaps the best example of this beautifully balanced home. With glass on three sides of the room, you can enjoy the stunning garden view as natural light pours into this cosy hideaway. Pour yourself a wee dram from the characterful bar room with furniture, paintings and art objects hand-picked by the host herself, and head out and explore over 3.5 acres of the private gardens. Gather the troops for an alfresco lunch on the sun-dappled patio or for the ultimate R&R take a gentle soak in the swim spa hot tub – our favourite spot to sip bubbly. This can be the perfect place to fit in your morning exercise too – partake in an outdoor pilates class around the spa. In the mornings, enjoy leisurely breakfasts at the family-style table in the garden as you plan your hiking routes. Hethas Hike, Ring Chesters Round, Four Forts Foray and the River and Ramparts Ramble await you – you might get lucky and sight wild goat, deer, red grouse and peregrine. When you return home, head to the living room where a wood-burning fire will make you nice and toasty – sink into the sofa and turn pages of your new read, interrupted only by the crackle of the fire. The farmhouse-style kitchen is perfect for preparing hearty home-cooked meals after a long day biking, fishing or horseriding. This area is known for its stargazing, garnering a Dark Sky Park award – wrap up and head out to the patio for a glass of red wine and watch the moon illuminate the rugged peaks.

It's easy to spend all day wandering the moors around the home, but if you’re seeking sand, Cocklawburn Beach and its stunning coastline are within driving distance.

If you’re looking to disconnect from day-to-day life, this converted old school house will provide the perfect retreat to do so. Nestled amongst miles of rolling green hills, and surrounded by wild flora and fauna, this home is a hiker's dream, with many walks in all different directions. The home stands at the foot of Cheviot Massif, the highest point in the Northumberland National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This location is also a designated Dark Sky Park, making it the perfect place for stargazing on clear nights.

Inside, you’ll find classic countryside cottage design, with painted beam ceilings, comfy furnishings and a gorgeous brickwork fireplace that’s great for gathering around on chilly nights. You can cook up hearty full English breakfasts in the kitchen, and eat all together around the dining table. The home also features a lovely enclosed garden with alfresco seating – a great place for your morning coffee.

In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800. 

In terms of location, you’re in the East Lothian countryside, a five-minute drive from the seaside town of Musselburgh where you’ll find a beach and golf course. Edinburgh’s historic centre is just a twenty-minute drive away too.

Once the home of the animals that worked the mill, this converted barn cottage has the air of a luxurious Scottish bothy. The wood-burning stove is the focal point of the living room where a selection of board games and coffee-table books provide some off-grid entertainment (though there is a widescreen TV too). Dining is set for six in the open-plan living area, and a stylish modern kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. Tucked above the kitchen on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a sleeping nook with a king-size bed serving as the second bedroom. Outside, there’s a private, walled garden with outdoor seating and a chiminea for colder evenings. Exploring the grounds of the old mill you might spot wild ducks, owls, heron and otters alongside the resident, friendly sheep. You’re welcome to apples, plums and hazelnuts from the orchard and can forage for brambles and elderflower too. Further afield, hilltop walks await in the Lammermuirs and it’s a seven-minute drive to Thirlestane Castle for a family day out.

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.

A magical tower, rising some 48ft above the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, this unique home is just as incredible inside as it looks. Its 9ft thick stone walls have stood the test of time since 1450 – although you may notice a few musket ball holes in the exterior. Packed with history and centuries of stories – many of which the estate manager will tell you on arrival – this home is an absolute gem by the banks of the River Annan. Exploring the castle for the first time is a wonderful experience, with a wealth of turrets, nooks and staircases to discover. The showstopper here is the Great Hall, with a high, arching ceiling and a Renaissance fireplace so huge you walk inside it. Like the rest of the castle, it's dressed with antique furniture and eclectic art collected over many years by the owners. Two long sofas make for a fabulous space to relax with family and friends and, in the evening, you can light the fire and play music from the gallery above. Elsewhere there's a fine library, a basement playroom and a large kitchen with its own casual dining space and a fireplace. Formal dinners can be held in the dining room – and perhaps if you don't feel like cooking, you could ask the host to arrange a private chef. On the top floors, bedrooms are romantic and impressive. We particularly love the huge antique four-poster in one room and the bed built into a cosy alcove in another. Outside there are four acres to explore, including a lake, a medieval-style topiary garden and a terrace for sipping drinks together on a summer evening. Perfect for a large group celebrating something special, this is an enchanting and memorable place to stay, just a short drive from the town of Lockerbie. And did we mention there's a famous ghost story here? Old ‘Dunty’ Porteous hasn't bothered visitors for decades but it makes for a fun tale – be sure to ask the staff about him.
