Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Go north to the village of Bellingham, an hour away from Newcastle, and that’s where you’ll find this beautiful, cosy cottage. With a charming colour palette of blue, pink and brown, and natural elements of wood and brick, the aesthetic here is enough to make you want to stay forever. Now imagine an alfresco breakfast at the picnic table outside, followed by a strong coffee whilst you snuggle into the corner sofa with a good book. Imagine games of poker around the dining table – loser cooks dinner  – or a glass of prosecco and a bubble bath. 
 
When you’re not relaxing indoors, do it outdoors by unwinding with a game of golf at the Bellingham Club, or a hike on the Hareshaw Iron Works Trail. There’s a shop nearby where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a number of cafes.

Sitting high on a hilltop overlooking Lauderdale, this cottage escape is in the blissfully quiet lowland countryside. Stepping outside, you’ll hear is the faint bleat of sheep from the farm nearby and cheep of birds in the ancient trees surrounding the cottage. Once a shepherd’s cottage, the old stone walls whisper of history, but inside it’s been restored to cosy modernity. A living room in rich forest green invites you to leave your wellies by the door and put your feet up at the end of the day. The country-style kitchen has everything you need to cook yourself, and there’s a restaurant at Carfraemill Hotel, a three-minute drive or twenty-minute walk away. The idyllic village of Lauder is an eight-minute drive away where you’ll find local galleries, coffee shops and a village deli, or make the forty-minute drive to Edinburgh for a day in the city.

Right in the heart of the village of Otterburn, this cosy and rather stylish home is perfect if you're keen to explore this beautiful area. On the banks of the River Rede, it's known for its local pubs and restaurants – as well as its proximity to the Northumberland National Park. Here the hiking is some of the best in the country and you're likely to spot red squirrels and deer. 

Inside, it's been put together with a great deal of design flair. The comfortable living room feels like home the minute you step inside, with navy blue walls, an imposing stone fireplace and warm wood floors. There's a squashy, L-shaped sofa for evenings in front of the log burner and some quirky and cool decor, while the kitchen is modern and practical.

But it's the bedrooms that steal the show here, with supremely comfortable beds and contemporary colour schemes. And we just love the pretty bathroom and its sloping ceiling and statement tiles.

You'll have outside space too, thanks to a private garden with a deck, but if you fancy an evening meal at the village instead, it's just a stroll away.

Escape to the rural idyll of farmhouse life at this cosy cottage in the Lauderdale Hills. It’s on a working farm, where the sheep have been tended to by the same family for generations and you can ramble across hilltops and country lanes straight from your doorstep. Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. The living room is a cosy spot in twilight pink, with an ornamental fireplace. Spacious, pastel bedrooms in the eaves are the perfect end to a day in the countryside.

This Grade II-listed cottage sits on the grounds of a countryside estate in the heart of rural Northumberland, with Berwick Upon Tweed and the Scottish Borders on your doorstep. Despite the age of the building, inside, the home is equipped with all the mod cons, including reliable wi-fi. The lounge is bright and beautiful, with an atmospheric open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need to whip up family feasts, while the quaint bedrooms have beautiful antique furniture and lovely artwork, and the twin room boasts an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Explore the surrounding area, and you'll discover several nearby pubs and an excellent restaurant within a few miles of the lodge. Why not forego the need for a designated driver and walk there for a hearty pub lunch before rambling home and kicking off your boots in the utility room, and settling in by the fire. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, twenty miles away, or Bamburgh Castle, another six miles down the coast. Alternatively, visit Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town is a fifteen-minute drive away.

On the outside, this 18th-century barn conversion is rustic as can be. But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time.

A magical tower, rising some 48ft above the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, this unique home is just as incredible inside as it looks. Its 9ft thick stone walls have stood the test of time since 1450 – although you may notice a few musket ball holes in the exterior. Packed with history and centuries of stories – many of which the estate manager will tell you on arrival – this home is an absolute gem by the banks of the River Annan. Exploring the castle for the first time is a wonderful experience, with a wealth of turrets, nooks and staircases to discover. The showstopper here is the Great Hall, with a high, arching ceiling and a Renaissance fireplace so huge you walk inside it. Like the rest of the castle, it's dressed with antique furniture and eclectic art collected over many years by the owners. Two long sofas make for a fabulous space to relax with family and friends and, in the evening, you can light the fire and play music from the gallery above. Elsewhere there's a fine library, a basement playroom and a large kitchen with its own casual dining space and a fireplace. Formal dinners can be held in the dining room – and perhaps if you don't feel like cooking, you could ask the host to arrange a private chef. On the top floors, bedrooms are romantic and impressive. We particularly love the huge antique four-poster in one room and the bed built into a cosy alcove in another. Outside there are four acres to explore, including a lake, a medieval-style topiary garden and a terrace for sipping drinks together on a summer evening. Perfect for a large group celebrating something special, this is an enchanting and memorable place to stay, just a short drive from the town of Lockerbie. And did we mention there's a famous ghost story here? Old ‘Dunty’ Porteous hasn't bothered visitors for decades but it makes for a fun tale – be sure to ask the staff about him.

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.

In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800. 

In terms of location, you’re in the East Lothian countryside, a five-minute drive from the seaside town of Musselburgh where you’ll find a beach and golf course. Edinburgh’s historic centre is just a twenty-minute drive away too.

Once the home of the animals that worked the mill, this converted barn cottage has the air of a luxurious Scottish bothy. The wood-burning stove is the focal point of the living room where a selection of board games and coffee-table books provide some off-grid entertainment (though there is a widescreen TV too). Dining is set for six in the open-plan living area, and a stylish modern kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. Tucked above the kitchen on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a sleeping nook with a king-size bed serving as the second bedroom. Outside, there’s a private, walled garden with outdoor seating and a chiminea for colder evenings. Exploring the grounds of the old mill you might spot wild ducks, owls, heron and otters alongside the resident, friendly sheep. You’re welcome to apples, plums and hazelnuts from the orchard and can forage for brambles and elderflower too. Further afield, hilltop walks await in the Lammermuirs and it’s a seven-minute drive to Thirlestane Castle for a family day out. 

Bothy

This period home is a great choice for those wanting a peaceful base from which to explore Edinburgh. Located in the leafy suburb of Eskbank, you’ll find a country park and riverside walks within strolling distance, yet you’re only a thirty-minute drive from the city centre. Or if you want to leave the car at home, just jump on a bus or train. The home itself has plenty to offer a family or group of friends. There’s a games room to keep the kids amused, a sun room to relax in, and a private garden for warmer days.

From Robert Burns to JK Rowling, Edinburgh has history of inspiring literary greats. And if you stay here you could join these hallowed ranks, because this charming apartment has plenty to write home about. The living room is a chic and cosy spot, with its exposed wooden floors, geometric rug, feature fireplace and cushioned-up window nook – ideal for curling up with a good book. The turquoise kitchen has everything you need for making your favourite foods, and the bedroom is an oasis of calm with its clean, white bedding. And then there’s the location. Sitting almost next door to King's Theatre and Edinburgh University, you’ll be a short walk from some of the city’s greatest sights, including the castle, the Royal Mile and Greyfriars Kirkyard. And who knows, maybe you'll find the motivation to write your own best-selling novel while you're exploring the city.

But this fabulous houseboat at Lochrin Basin will defy your expectations, just fifteen minutes on foot from Edinburgh Castle. Its bright green painted exterior stands out on the water, and the interior has gorgeous, rich wood throughout. Two bright terraces on the roof deck are where you’ll sip champagne on arrival. Spacious, stylish, and unique, the VIP experience on board feels more like a yacht than a canal barge. Make use of the foot spa and electric massage chair after settling down in your fluffy bathrobe. And your host even offers luxury welcome packages full of fine Scottish fare, as well as a private chef. If you fancy heading out for cafés, dinners, and drinking, walk up to Bruntsfield in just ten minutes, or head over to Tollcross in six. Both areas are absolutely teeming with brunch spots and tasty restaurants, as well as plenty of watering holes like traditional pubs. After a few drams of whisky, head back to the boat and enjoy a nightcap on the water.

Step aboard this cheerful green houseboat for a fantastic stay on the water. Moored in Lochrin Basin, in the west of Edinburgh, she is a uniquely charming vessel that invites you to experience life on the canal – without having to actually do any sailing. The gorgeous wooden interior creates a homely vibe, where you can settle in and plan your sightseeing itinerary. Cooking is a joy, thanks to the forest green galley kitchen, and on fair days you can head outside onto the deck for a barbecue in the Scottish sunshine. To help you get extra comfortable, your host provides fluffy robes, hot drinks and eco-friendly toiletries – and kids are well looked after too with a range of entertainment options along with their very own bunk room. Seeing the city's most iconic landmarks is easy from here – Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket are around ten minutes away on foot. And, if you want to travel further afield, then you'll find both a bus stop and a taxi rank just thirty seconds away from the boat.

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

We love visiting Edinburgh, with its history, culture and abundance of great dining-out options. This apartment makes for an excellent home-from-home for friends or family visiting the city. It can be found outside of the centre, close to Gorgie, and has superb transport links.
