Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. With glass on three sides of the room, you can enjoy the stunning garden view as natural light pours into this cosy hideaway. Pour yourself a wee dram from the characterful bar room with furniture, paintings and art objects hand-picked by the host herself, and head out and explore over 3.5 acres of the private gardens. Gather the troops for an alfresco lunch on the sun-dappled patio or for the ultimate R&R take a gentle soak in the swim spa hot tub – our favourite spot to sip bubbly. Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

If you’d like to expend some energy, embark on a hike to Roxburgh – the walk begins at Kelso Abbey and takes around an hour and twenty minutes. 

Head back to your abode in the early evening for a tasty supper rustled up at the kitchenette followed by a mug of hot chocolate in front of the wood-burning stove.

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.  

The Old Mill House

Once the home of the animals that worked the mill, this converted barn cottage has the air of a luxurious Scottish bothy. The wood-burning stove is the focal point of the living room where a selection of board games and coffee-table books provide some off-grid entertainment (though there is a widescreen TV too). Dining is set for six in the open-plan living area, and a stylish modern kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. Tucked above the kitchen on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a sleeping nook with a king-size bed serving as the second bedroom. Outside, there’s a private, walled garden with outdoor seating and a chiminea for colder evenings. Exploring the grounds of the old mill you might spot wild ducks, owls, heron and otters alongside the resident, friendly sheep. You’re welcome to apples, plums and hazelnuts from the orchard and can forage for brambles and elderflower too. Further afield, hilltop walks await in the Lammermuirs and it’s a seven-minute drive to Thirlestane Castle for a family day out.

Tucked away on a lovely farm estate, this quaint cottage offers all the charm of a country retreat combined with the modern comforts you seek when on a getaway. 

Throw the sliding doors open and start the morning with a coffee in the garden swing seats, then savour your breakfast at the family-style table whilst admiring the view of the sprawling sunflower fields. We imagine you’ll want to spend the majority of your time walking the local trails across the Cheviot Hills and ambling along the River Eden, though if you’d like to practice your swing, the Kelso Golf Club is a short drive away too. The cosy bedrooms, with their minimal and homey designs, beckon you into restful sleep so you can wake up refreshed, ready for a day at the Kelso Market. 

On cool nights, cook up some family favourites in the country-style kitchen, then cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play a few games of cards by firelight – a glass of wine wouldn’t go amiss here. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home alternatively, you could make the drive to the forty-minute drive to Tweedmouth for a day on the sands.

Amongst the Sunflowers

If escaping to nature is your idea of the perfect break, then look no further. Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded. Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.

Right in the heart of the village of Otterburn, this cosy and rather stylish home is perfect if you're keen to explore this beautiful area. On the banks of the River Rede, it's known for its local pubs and restaurants – as well as its proximity to the Northumberland National Park. Here the hiking is some of the best in the country and you're likely to spot red squirrels and deer. 

Inside, it's been put together with a great deal of design flair. The comfortable living room feels like home the minute you step inside, with navy blue walls, an imposing stone fireplace and warm wood floors. There's a squashy, L-shaped sofa for evenings in front of the log burner and some quirky and cool decor, while the kitchen is modern and practical.

But it's the bedrooms that steal the show here, with supremely comfortable beds and contemporary colour schemes. And we just love the pretty bathroom and its sloping ceiling and statement tiles.

You'll have outside space too, thanks to a private garden with a deck, but if you fancy an evening meal at the village instead, it's just a stroll away.
