Though you may just want to stay in your secluded country paradise, playing croquet on the lawn, soaking in the hot tub or enjoying a barbecue in the sun. Inside, you’ll find several spots for the group to spread out – curled up with a book in the sunny conservatory, perched by the crackling fire in the main lounge, playing table football in the games room or perhaps even tinkling a tune on the upright piano in the dining room. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where a four-door Aga purrs with endless warmth. Your host is in the neighbouring farmhouse should you need anything.

We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Peek through the telescope in the lounge and see if you can spot the isle of Arran in the distance. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. If you can tear yourself away, miles of stunning natural trails await you in nearby Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. In the evening, stoke the logs in the fireplace, pour yourself a glass of fine Scotch whisky and make the most of your waterside abode.

Built in 1870 by Lord Arbinger as a fishing lodge for Inverlochy Castle, it’s the perfect base for salmon fishing, scenic walks, or simply curling up by the fire. Outside, five acres of private grounds invite lazy afternoons, riverside strolls, and stargazing beneath wide Scottish skies. Granted, you’ll need a car to get the best from your stay. But with total freedom to explore a dramatic, film-worthy landscape of glens, lochs and ancient castles, it's more than worth it.

Built in the 1900s. this magical estate is a National Monuments of Scotland building and was designed by two artists. Their effect can still be seen today, with tapestries hanging on walls and quirky art pieces - alongside bookcases stuffed with reading material in nearly all the rooms, giving the home a cosy lived-in feel. Spread across five turrets, the space combines castle fantasies with historical touches. Wannabe sleeping beauties will love the four-poster bed in the top room - when you do arise, bathe in the bathroom with its vintage tub and swirling retro wallpaper. Those who prefer fact over fiction can nose around the home's original features, including in the wooden beamed kitchen, complete with an AGA for cooking something delicious.

If escaping to nature is your idea of the perfect break, then look no further. Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded. Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

Situated on a working farm and sporting estate in Perthshire, this refurbished Victorian home is a great option for larger groups wanting to explore the Big Tree Country. Due to its elevated position, you'll get stunning panoramic views across Aberfeldy, Ben Lawers, and the surrounding hills. This Norwegian log house is surrounded by the picturesque mountains around Fort William. It’s a short drive into the centre for shops, restaurants and cosy local pubs, but the main highlight of the area is the myriad of hiking and biking trails through the mountainous Highlands, including the iconic Ben Nevis. The main living room is a vision of cabin cosiness, with a working wood stove at the centre. There are books and board games galore for quiet nights spent at home and a sprawling private garden should the sun come out. With several living rooms, you won't be short on space – our favourite is the first-floor lounge with breathtaking views of the rugged scenery.

Overlooking North Inch Park and the River Tay, this classic apartment sits in a handsome, Georgian building. High ceilings, detailed cornicing and big sash windows all combine to create the feeling of stepping back into the 19th century inside. The grand entrance hall with old maps on the wall sets the tone of tradition and opulence. Heading through to the living room you’re met with park views and a drawing room feel from Persian rugs and plush sofas with faux fur throws. The dine-in kitchen is more than big enough to accommodate the bustle of family breakfast time, and there’s dining for the whole group at the long table. We particularly love the quirky design touches in the bedrooms – a headboard depicting a bucolic etching and a sparkling chandelier in the smallest bedroom. At the end of the day, the claw-footed tub in the main bathroom beckons for a long soak.
