If you ever need a break from working on your manuscript, Castle Beach takes all of a minute to reach on foot, as does the 12th-century landmark that lends the sandy spot its name. Catching the twenty-minute ferry to see the abbey on Caldey Island is well worth doing, too.

Tucked away in the pretty village of Ludchurch and surrounded by glorious Pembrokeshire countryside, this home is a haven of tranquillity. As a former barn, this home retains much of its rustic charm with exposed beams and high vaulted ceilings, but don’t worry, there are no creaky areas or draughty spaces here. The rooms have all the modern comforts you could ask for – a cosy log burner, soft furnishings, WiFi and underfloor heating throughout. The open-plan living area is wonderfully spacious, uncluttered and awash with natural light. If the weather is good you’ll want to push open the patio doors and breathe in the countryside views. The garden has a serene summerhouse, but the best place to absorb the peaceful surroundings is from the heated hot tub. Drift away in the warm bubbles while contemplating the scenery of the rolling countryside. It’s a scenic 40-minute walk into the village of Wiseman’s Bridge, or fetch your towel, bathing suit and other paraphernalia to make the ten-minute drive down to the glorious Pembrokeshire coastline and its award-winning beaches.

Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons, just a five-minute walk from Dinefwr Castle and a quarter of an hour from the station, it's a great spot. And to think passers-by wouldn't even know the home was there.

Speaking of, we can't help but swoon over the verdant, lush landscape that awaits you outside. The baby-blue kitchen is both super-sleek and big enough for cooking up hearty meals, while there's also a private courtyard outside just in case the weather's nice enough to dine alfresco.

If that's the case, there's plenty to see and do in this south Welsh idyll. Tenby Castle is only ten minutes' walk up the coast, as is the town's Museum and Art Gallery. This area by the North Beach is also where you can catch a ferry to Caldey Island, on which you can visit the monastery and spot some of the diverse wildlife.

From here, you can take in the breathtaking vistas of golden sandy beaches and rolling waves, with a panorama that even stretches as far as St. Catherine’s Island and Caldey Island.

Spend your days on Tenby's South Beach itself, which is a short walk away, below a promenade and cliffs. Then, when you return home, get comfortable on the sofa or in the armchair to continue admiring the views. From the AGA-style stove to the exposed stone walls, it radiates warmth and classic rustic style. There's plenty of room here to make yourself at home – including a separate den fit for the kids, complete with an Xbox for rare rainy days. Out on the deck, you can bask in the scenery while firing up the barbecue, watching the four-legged family members let off steam in the enclosed garden. Better yet, take the dogs for a walk along the sea – Saundersfoot Beach is just a ten-minute stroll away. Brimming with seaside charm and awash with cute cafes, traditional pubs and delicious restaurants, Saundersfoot is a gem in Pembrokeshire's crown. Grab an ice cream cone and sprawl out on the sand or try your hand at crabbing along the harbour walls. Tenby's sprawling beaches are also ten minutes away by car – safe to say, this is an excellent spot for an escape to the coast.

Cook up your favourite dinners in the flash kitchenette – but not before you’ve sampled fish and chips from D.Fecci and Sons on lower Frog Street, some of the best in town. When the sun shines, make a beeline for the placid waters of Castle Beach and explore Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, the oldest of its kind in Wales. If you’d prefer to expend a little more energy, it’s an hour’s amble to Saundersfoot. 

What A Catch

Situated in the heart of Saundersfoot, this apartment’s enviable location is perfect for a family seaside getaway. Compact and cosy, the bedrooms, in particular, are a bit of a squeeze, but it has everything needed for a comfortable stay. The second bedroom is short on space when sleeping four – having said that, it’s ideal for families with young children. Getting ready in the mornings may take a while with one bathroom, but that’ll soon be forgotten once you step onto the golden sands of nearby Saundersfoot beach.

Luxury Countryside Haven

South-facing sea views grab all the headlines here, with large windows in the open layout living area/kitchen, plus direct access to a private balcony ensuring you can make the most of the unparalleled location. 

The interior decor is no less eye-catching, with mid-century style leather seating, a wood burner set into the wall, plus a subtle maritime theme, with hints of blue and wood cladding that reminded us of the side of a beach hut.

Sharing the open-plan space is the kitchen, with the sink set up so you can look out at the waves as you wash up the bits and pieces that won't fit in the dishwasher. Rather sensibly, the hob and oven face the opposite way, to minimise distractions. With dinner ready, it's down to you to plate up and grab a seat at the rustic yet elegant dining table.

Elsewhere, the two bedrooms keep up with the nods to the nautical setting, with striped wallpaper and sea-themed artwork adorning the walls.

In addition to the expansive beach, the old tramway route that connected the coal port to mines at Stepsaside survives as a spectacular section of the picturesque Pembrokeshire Coast Path. It's 186 miles long in total, but we'd recommend dipping in and out to walk along particularly panoramic parts.

Those who prefer their outdoor activities more action-packed will find some of Pembrokeshire's finest surf spots within a twenty-mile drive. A particular standout is Freshwater West, which is hailed by many as the most reliable break in the land of dragons and daffodils.

When you're not at home soaking up the view or lounging on the sofa, spend your time wandering through Tenby's walled centre, admiring the colourful houses, browsing the local boutiques and dining at the many delicious eateries. And with five beaches to tickle your fancy, you'll have plenty of options when it comes to sprawling in the sand. Our favourite is Castle Beach, a five-minute walk away.

We can't imagine a better place to switch off than here. No wif-fi, no disturbances – just you, your loved one, and the woods. For a couple looking to spend a romantic weekend away, this couldn't be more perfect.

Nestled between the trees on private woodlands, this cabin lets you shed away the thoughts of the daily grind, while still providing home comforts. The well-equipped kitchen is surprisingly large, so dinners at home are a breeze, and the plush sofa is the perfect place for getting cosy after a day of exploring. 

But really, the best seat in the house is just outside, overlooking the calm lake. You'll love rustling up barbecue dinners, tucking in around the picnic table, while looking out at the wide-spanning fields and the lake. It couldn't be more peaceful. Until you get the wood-burning hot tub bubbling, then we're really talking. Sip on wine in the warming hot tub as the sun starts to go down and the stars start to dot the night sky. 

Blissfully alone in the peace and quiet of the woods, you wouldn't think you're just a fifteen-minute drive from Tenby. Explore the quaint seaside town, full of traditional charm, coastal paths, narrow streets lined with pastel-coloured houses, knick-knack shops, and teeming with historical sites. The surrounding beaches are absolutely beautiful – ideal for taking in the view while tucking into fish and chips. 

The Great Alone

Bookended on one side by Saundersfoot and the other by Narberth, this home in Ludchurch is in an excellent spot for exploring Pembrokeshire's coast. A ten-minute drive away is Telpyn Beach, but just a little further is Tenby, home to pretty pastel houses, narrow lanes lined with boutiques and pubs, and not to mention the five award-winning beaches. As far as locales go, it's pretty ideal – close to the seaside, yet tucked away in the countryside for extra tranquillity. And the views from this home aren't bad, either. Stretching out over the countryside and towards the sea, the best place to take it all in is the private hot tub. Pour yourself a glass of wine and sink into the bubbling waters, watching as the sun slowly sets and the stars come out. Inside is cosy and warm, with a comfortable living area and a sleek kitchen that makes cooking up a storm easy. Everything is on the ground floor, so it's very accessible – the en-suite in the main bedroom even has a roll-in shower, support aids and emergency pull cords. We think a family would be pleased to call this place home during a stay on the Welsh coast.
