It's here that you'll find your home, complete with its own pebbled courtyard and private ground floor entrance.

Set over two floors, the house has been modernised to create a comfortable, home from home feel. There's a pretty country-style kitchen and an open-plan living space which keeps everything sociable. Upstairs, two cosy bedrooms still show off a little of the building's original structure with wooden beams. Sit outside in the newly renovated courtyard on warm evenings or stroll out into the town to try out some of its excellent eateries. Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons, just a five-minute walk from Dinefwr Castle and a quarter of an hour from the station, it's a great spot. With a stunning garden and vibrant interior, this cosy home is a great choice for those looking for a fun, relaxing getaway in Wales. A lot of things have changed since this cottage was built in the nineteenth century, but we're willing to bet that the surrounding view of the Upper Towy Valley and Cambrian Mountains is just as mesmerising as it was all those years ago.

Inside, a couple of period features also remain, like the mighty stone fireplace that acts as a natural focal point in the living space. However, there have been enough contemporary additions to ensure that the address well and truly belongs in the twenty-first century. You only have to look at the modern kitchen, the bedrooms painted in a soothing white and the subway-tiled shower to see what we mean.

Out through the front door, there's a small patio with seating so you can admire the gorgeous scenery and watch the neighbouring sheep – which sometimes come to graze right up to the home's windows. Come nighttime, stargazing is made all the more beautiful by the fact that the property sits in a designated Dark Sky area, free of light pollution. 

This part of South Wales is an excellent location for walkers and cyclists, as the Brecon Beacons National Park can be reached in around twenty minutes' drive, going through the town of Llandovery in the process.

The building you'll be calling home was once part of the home farm for the impressive Plas Cilybebyll Estate and was most likely stables and grooms' quarters – although some of its stone features hark back to the estate's noble history. Dive into its fascinating past and you'll spot links to the descendants of the ancient Welsh kings, the Norman invasion, Iolo Morgannwg and more. You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

Cleverly converted and architect designed, this home uses green energy and is insulated with sheep's wool. It's a surprisingly modern and comfortable home for a small family or a couple of friends here to make the most of its idyllic rural setting. By day, explore the farm thanks to a trail that starts at your door, visiting cattle and spotting wildlife as you go. If you're a keen cyclist, you're within striking distance of the Afan Forest and Bike Park Wales, with safe storage for your equipment.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the centre of Saundersfoot and its beach is all of five mintues' walk from the front door. The town of Tenby is also only ten minutes' drive down the coastline and offers visitors a castle and a selection of galleries to visit.

Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. The village of Tresaith on the Ceredigion coastline is relatively humble, but you can find some truly spectacular homes here – this three-storey gem is among them.

It's definitely an address that has been constructed with the surrounding scenery in mind, with sea views to be admired from the balconies and out through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Even to the rear of the house that isn't so blessed with coastal vistas, there's a peaceful terrace surrounded by flower beds and it's more than possible to enjoy alfresco feasts in this space, thanks to the dining table, pizza oven and barbecue.

Should the weather ever be a little uninspiring, there's plenty to keep guests entertained inside. In the games room alone, you'll find tables for pool and table tennis, as well as a darts board and piano. Once you've exhausted these, the cinema room complete with leather seats and surround sound is the ideal place to watch a movie or some live sports. It's just as easy to escape to the Jacuzzi bathtub and treat yourself to an unrushed soak.

You'll eventually want to head to the seaside at some point and Tresaith Beach is less than ten minutes' away on foot. It's easy to arrange watersport activities here and – if you're lucky – spot dolphins. There's also a waterfall at the far end of the sand, as well.

It's an area that's famous for its sparkling blue seas and dolphin-watching – you may even spot a pod from the kitchen window. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep. 

Bothying In Style

Set on the outskirts of the pretty village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this quaint cottage offers a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The home has been lovingly converted from a workers' house into a contemporary home by your hosts, with meticulous attention paid to every detail. Step inside and head through to the open-plan living room, complete with an atmospheric wood burner and a dining table with plenty of space. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need to prepare picnic lunches to keep you fuelled up on hikes, plus more elaborate dinners at the end of a long day out in nature. There are plenty of trails leading straight from the front door up onto the high peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Alternatively, enjoy more leisurely strolls along the canal. Pen y Fan

When Mary Ann Evans paid a visit to this home in 1857, she was inspired to write a novel. A year later, Scenes From A Clerical Life was published under the nom de plume George Eliot and over the course of the next twenty years, she would write some of the most influential books of the period, including Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda.

No pressure to anybody coming to this four-storey, Grade-II listed townhouse in the present day, then. Straight away, you can see why it had the power to rouse dormant literary ambitions — the view from the huge windows of Tenby Harbour is nothing short of sublime. Even though the interior has been updated in the proceeding two centuries, there are still signs of the home's heritage, from the high ceilings and tall windows to the original wooden floorboards in the hallway.

If you ever need a break from working on your manuscript, Castle Beach takes all of a minute to reach on foot, as does the 12th-century landmark that lends the sandy spot its name. Catching the twenty-minute ferry to see the abbey on Caldey Island is well worth doing, too.

It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Hergest Lee

Hidden away among rolling farmland on the outskirts of Machynlleth, this converted eighteenth-century miner’s cottage helps get you closer to nature. A private garden offers plenty of play space for younger members of your party, while more active visitors will appreciate the many scenic walks in the surrounding area — many of which begin right at your front door. With Snowdonia National Park reachable in fifteen minutes' drive and the rugged coastline of Cardigan Bay taking about half an hour, this home presents itself as the ideal base from which to explore the varied attractions of Mid Wales.
