Upstairs, two cosy bedrooms still show off a little of the building's original structure with wooden beams. Sit outside in the newly renovated courtyard on warm evenings or stroll out into the town to try out some of its excellent eateries. Perfect for exploring the Brecon Beacons, just a five-minute walk from Dinefwr Castle and a quarter of an hour from the station, it's a great spot. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. In the living room, you’ll find everything you need to keep the wood-burning going in the evening and the granite-topped kitchen provides all the appliances and crockery required for self-catering. Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains.

Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. Perched on the banks of the Teifi estuary, this renovated former sea captain's villa in southwest Wales treats guests to some spectacular waterside views. On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. Speaking of, we can't help but swoon over the verdant, lush landscape that awaits you outside. You'll find everything you need for a relaxing coastal retreat in this charming house, be it board games and books or ping-pong and Prime. We think it's the perfect spot to lounge with a cup of tea or a refreshing G&T as the day draws to a close. 

Newport is a pretty market town on the north coast of Pembrokeshire, situated at the foot of Carnigli Mountain and the Preseli Hills. There's an array of eateries, including small cafes and old-fashioned pubs, within walking distance, as well as independent shops and galleries. Newport Beach isn't far – about a half-hour stroll along the coastal path – while historic sites like Pentre Ifan, Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and Nevern Castle are less than ten minutes by car.

Grab an ice cream cone and sprawl out on the sand or try your hand at crabbing along the harbour walls. Tenby's sprawling beaches are also ten minutes away by car – safe to say, this is an excellent spot for an escape to the coast.
