A traditional, understated seaside resort – it's all chalets, fish'n'chips, and windbreaks – just as it should be. Once Upon a Tide

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Hergest Lee

This rural cottage boasts views of the Herefordshire countryside from the garden. Children will love the tree swing here, and adults can enjoy a cup of tea at the alfresco dining table while the kids play. Inside you’ll find a cosy lounge, with a fire for colder months, and a farmhouse kitchen – the perfect spot for a family meal. If you’re feeling energetic, you can borrow bikes from your host to explore the surrounding area, or use their tennis court which is a mile away. And for a slice of village life, take the 1-mile stroll to Pembridge where you’ll find a tea shop and historic pub.

Also close by is Green Castle Woods – about a five-minute drive – which is perfect for afternoon strolls through ancient woodlands. Or, ten minutes in the opposite direction lies Carmarthen, believed to be the oldest town in Wales – head there for places to eat, drink and shop aplenty.

Ty Log

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep. 

Bothying In Style

Swap the big smoke for the great outdoors at this converted barn, tucked away at the foot of Angel Mountain, close to the Pembrokeshire coast. 

Nestled amidst the patchwork hills of the Welsh countryside, you could feel a million miles from civilisation here –⁠ which is just how we like things. But when it’s time for a change of pace, the charming seaside town of Newport (six-minute drive) is an afternoon well spent – as is the mighty Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with its vast sandy beaches and secluded coves (eleven-minute drive).
 
Back at this quirky bolthole retreat, exposed stonework shows the bones of this barn's past, while vintage furniture and objects de art add layers of interest and heaps of style. A home for all seasons, on long summer nights, slide the bifold doors right back and stoke up the barbecue – the firepit will help keep the night flowing as a carpet of stars appear overhead. The building you'll be calling home was once part of the home farm for the impressive Plas Cilybebyll Estate and was most likely stables and grooms' quarters – although some of its stone features hark back to the estate's noble history. You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

As you look around this home, it becomes clear very quickly that it has been designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal scenery in which this part of south Wales really specialises. In the living room, huge bi-fold doors open up to Juliet balconies that gaze out over Tenby's South Beach, while in the bedrooms there are further balconies, only this time with a view of Caldy Island. With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. Wild and wonderful, this honey-coloured homestead on the edge of St Dogmaels is as charming as it looks. Inside, you'll find rustic living spaces that exude warmth – it'll be hard to resist a Netflix movie night curled up in front of the roaring log burner – and we appreciate how interior bi-fold doors give you full control over the size of the living space. Home chefs can let loose in the kitchen, rustling up freshly-baked cakes and mouthwatering Sunday roasts to share around the eight-seater table. Upstairs, a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub before bedtime is just the ticket after a long day.

Speaking of, we can't help but swoon over the verdant, lush landscape that awaits you outside. Listen to the babbling stream as you share a pitcher of Pimm's or gather around the fire pit on hazy summer evenings. It's not just grown-ups who will adore this home. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. Despite the secluded location, plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. After a hard day of hiking in the hills, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage in the on-site treatment room.
