This home in the heart of Chester is full of thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, a breakfast hamper, books and board games for the children, and even yoga mats and blocks should you feel the urge to ‘om’ while staying here. From the peace and quiet of the street, you’d never guess you were just a two-minute walk from Chester’s historic centre. Almost all the town's biggest sights are within walking distance in fact – you’re minutes from Grosvenor Park, the River Dee, Chester Racecourse, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Built in the 19th century, the house has been fully renovated and has a bright, fresh feel to it that is instantly welcoming. Decorated in refreshing whites, there are bright splashes of orange, green, and yellow to greet you in the morning. And after a day of sightseeing, the courtyard garden is a suntrap and the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or reviving cup of tea.

There's an awful lot to like about this Regency home, but to start with anything but the incredible location feels almost sacrilegious. Sitting on top of Chester's old walls and overlooking the River Dee, you'll spend countless hours on the rear terrace, dining and relaxing with this most scenic of backdrops.

That being said, the home's interior is quite impressive, too. The tall windows and high ceilings lend an innate grandeur, and this is only furthered by the contemporary design that gives classic tropes – chandeliers, wood-panelled bookshelves, copper bathtubs – a modern-day spin. The stunning kitchen and cosy living room complete with roaring fireplace are sure to be favourites among those with sophisticated tastes, but there's also a massive games room and home cinema to keep everybody entertained.

When you can prise yourself away from this home's many amenities, there's a wealth of historic attractions, buzzy bars and riverside walking paths to explore in local Chester, but there are other options a little further afield – beaches on the north Welsh coastline can be reached in 45 minutes' drive, while Liverpool sits a similar amount of time to the north.

Your morning coffee comes with a view here, as many bedrooms step directly out onto the terrace, while the large alfresco dining area will be popular when the sun's out. Indoors, the games room and indoor swimming pool will compete for your attention during the day, and there's even a cosy cave bar for nightcaps. And although you'll feel far removed from the city here, you're just a few miles from several local pubs, and Wrexham and Chester are a quick drive if you want to explore.

As daylight creeps through your curtains in the mornings, hop out of bed (just mind the beams), rustle up a spot of breakfast and enjoy a morning coffee in your courtyard as the countryside wakes around you and happy birdsong fills the air. A small town with an intriguing history, the compact grid system of Caerwys was allegedly the model layout for the first settler who mapped out the city of Philadelphia. But far from its transatlantic, urban sibling, this quaint village has stuck to its rustic roots. At the heart of the town, a five-minute walk from the golf club, four from the 13th century St. Michaels Church, and less than a minute from your nearest pub, this cottage is ready to welcome you home. As you arrive, its rugged stone exterior oozes rural, village charm. The white door beckons you inside, where underfloor heating allows you to explore every room in warmth and comfort. Its cosy, traditional lounge features a wood-burning stove and plump leather sofas – perfect for snuggling up with a classic novel as you sip hot chocolate. But on summer days, the conservatory at the back offers a modern, sunlit nook for sipping chilled pinot grigio. We love the stylish, bi-folding doors leading out to your private patio and courtyard. With picnic benches, a barbecue, alfresco dining table, plus a view of the aforementioned church, you’ll be spending every balmy afternoon in this idyllic spot.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Sitting amid green countryside in an elevated position overlooking the Irish Sea and Dee Estuary, this cosy home is an ideal base for those keen to explore the North Wales coast. Begin your mornings outside on the patio, cup of tea in hand, watching the boats bob on the blue horizon. When you’re ready for breakfast, rustle up something tasty in the fully-equipped kitchen and dine all together in the open-plan living area. 

Take advantage of sunny afternoons with an invigorating walk through your locale or pack your seaside essentials and drive for ten minutes to Talacre Beach. After a bracing paddle, nip over to Prestatyn for its traditional pubs and laidback restaurants. Anyone looking to disconnect and recharge in a beautiful location will love this cosy apartment. Set within the grounds of a Grade II listed Georgian house, you’ll be welcomed by peaceful gardens and a wonderful sense of character. It’s worth noting there are steep stairs leading up to the main floor and the garden is shared with the owners, but there are plenty of quiet spots to discover and you will have access to a private hot tub (with views overlooking the orchard). Breakfast is included, children’s amenities can be provided and you'll find a lot to explore in the surroundings – Market Drayton is just over a mile away.

Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

Snuggled at the southern point of Snowdonia National Park in Sarnau, this quaint abode is made for rural exploration. If you don't fancy the challenging terrains of Snowdon, there are various walking and cycling trails close by to the cottage.

This snug home infuses a homespun and rustic feel with modern comforts. Find stone walls and wooden beams looking into a TV, DVD player and contemporary cooking items. It's the perfect blend of tradition and technology. 

To really capture the privacy and peace of your home, sit out on the garden bench and admire the stunning views. Situated in a quiet hamlet, the only sounds you'll hear are from the animals in the nearby fields.

If you'd prefer to get out and explore the nearby area, the encompassing landscape is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails. If two wheels aren't your scene, Bala is just four miles away and is an oasis of water sports, abseiling and kayaking.

Once you've explored the diverse scenery around your tranquil haven, visit the welcoming pubs and restaurants around Bala. For a real Welsh treat, a Michelin star restaurant resides up the road in Llandrillo.

Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

This delightful townhouse is on the beachfront of quiet Rhos-on-Sea. For a coastal getaway and the chance to experience the charm of a small town, look no further. 

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

When you’re ready to venture out, you’ll find historic Conwy, Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed and a selection of beaches all within easy reach – however you like to spend your time, there’s something for everyone here. 

River Reverie

Once the former shooting residence of the Earl of Marlborough, this charming Grade II listed cottage in the heart of Snowdonia carefully stitches together history and contemporary design. Original slate floors and a huge inglenook fireplace contrast against modern additions such as the sleek roll-top bath and luxurious hot tub. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where your clan will spend time eating, drinking and playing card games if it tips it down outside. Light the wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay or warm up with a brisk walk to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – you’ll get there in under an hour if you go at a decent pace. Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Hire a fishing rod or stroll around the water’s edge, stopping for a well-deserved cup of tea in the café along the way.

Every care has been taken to modernise this Victorian cottage without diminishing its period charm. We love the old-world touches, like the cast iron heaters, sparkling chandeliers and ornate vintage mirrors. Escaping from the hustle and bustle of the big city is a no-brainer here. Throw open your windows in the morning, and you’ll hear birdsong – you might even see a passing deer or two. Whip up a quick breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen, and then put on your walking shoes. Miles of open countryside await right on your doorstep – the cottage is at the end of a drive where the village gives way to the natural world. You can spend entire days hiking the patchwork of fields and farms crisscrossed by a web of brooks. You’ll quickly work up an appetite after all that exploring. You can grab a meal in the village pub, the local chippy or the Tandoori restaurant. However, if you want more variety, a five-minute drive will take you to nearby Ramsbottom, where you'll have a much wider choice of cafes, restaurants, and food shops. A thirty-minute drive will have you in central Manchester, in the heart of all that the city has to offer. In the evening, fill the bathtub and feel the relaxation wash over you.

The Longbarn is a luxurious Grade II listed holiday home that offers stunning views of the Vale of Clwyd. The award-winning property has been recently renovated and tastefully furnished to create a cozy, bright, and stylish feel. Gower Cottage

In a fabulous position in the seaside town of Rhos-on-Sea, this top floor home isn't just stylish, it's an eco-conscious traveller’s dream. With a tumble of house plants, eclectic vintage furniture, wood floors and bohemian art, it's a world away from the typical nautical theme you often see on the coast. Grab a yoga mat for a stretch at sunrise, then cradle your coffee by the window, with views of Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve in one direction and Colwyn Bay in the other. Beautifully contrasting the white main room, the bedroom feels like an intimate retreat with its dark walls and canopy bed facing the panoramic sea view. Always with one eye on sustainability, the host has left a few treats to get you started in the sunny kitchen, along with eco cleaning products. After exploring the beach, you’ll relish a soak in the vintage tub framed by the prettiest of pink tiles. For a magical end to your day, grab a glass of wine for a cosy evening by the bedroom fire. Out and about there are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town, and Conwy is just a twelve-minute drive away.

This charming stone cottage in North Wales accommodates two guests and one child, with spectacular views of the Snowdonia Mountains from a secluded position above the Eglwysbach valley. The Bodnant Estate offers ten luxury self-catering cottages, including Ty Newydd, sleeping eight guests, and Lletty, sleeping six guests. The estate features hilly and wooded countryside in the lower reaches of the Conwy Valley and various houses and cottages available for rent as holiday lets. The cozy cottage has been sympathetically extended to provide generous openings between the main rooms and includes a wood-burning stove, oak floors, an enclosed garden, garden furniture, barbecue, and Wi-Fi. Guests can explore over 20 miles of private paths winding through woods and farms across the estate or visit the world-famous Bodnant Garden owned by the National Trust. Fishing permits are available at Bodnant Garden Centre. Other nearby attractions include Zip World Fforest, Adventure Parc Snowdonia, Welsh Mountain Zoo, sandy beaches of Llandudno, Conwy and Colwyn Bay, Penrhyn Castle and several Welsh castles.

The Time Machine

The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

This home is perfect for solo travellers or couples seeking a quiet base outside the Shrewsbury town centre. With a south-facing garden and space for alfresco dining, this home is a welcoming spot to unwind after a day strolling around The Quarry Park. The inside is simple and practical, with lots of room to relax – the kitchen is primed for home-cooked meals prepared with ingredients you picked up from Shrewsbury Market Hall. Location-wise, you’re within easy driving distance of the town centre’s restaurants, galleries and theatres. 

Shrewsbury Shrub

Charming where it sits on a bend of a lane in rural Dolwyddelan, this terraced stone cottage has become a welcoming base for small families or groups of friends exploring Snowdonia National Park. From the back garden, where a hot tub and dining table are perfect accompaniments to sunny days, you can also enjoy views of Snowdon and Moel Siabod. The kitchen is small and best suited to small bites, but you're close to several restaurants in the town centre. Cosy, bright and brimming with character, this home is also 6km from Betws-y-Coed Golf Club and 18km from Penmaenmawr.

The Copse

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.
