This stone cottage in Snowdonia National Park will suit hiking, mountain biking and horse riding enthusiasts alike. Located on a working sheep farm with the homeowner’s bed and breakfast nearby, you wouldn’t know that the market town, Dolgellau is only a forty-minute walk away. Historically, it was known for the woollen and tanning industry. It is now known for having the oldest cricket club in Wales but, more prominently, Cadair Idris’ base camp. If you’re more of a beachgoer, take the great Mawddach trail down to the seaside town of Barmouth – less than a twenty-minute drive from home. You’re also a half-hour drive from the largest lake in Wales – Llyn Tegid. And after an explorative day full of adventure, return to your cosy cottage with heaps of bucolic charm. Stoke up the fire and settle down for a lovely evening under the wooden beamed ceilings. We especially love the farmhouse style doors and warm wooden furniture – you’d think you were in the farmhouse itself. The first thing you'll notice pulling up at this farmhouse is the thirty-five acres of private grounds – stunning greenery wraps around you, making it a fantastic option for those who love bringing their pets along with them for idyllic countryside walks. Just outside the home, there's a peaceful garden, complete with flourishing plant beds and a picnic bench from which to enjoy the peace and quiet of the North Walian countryside. Indoors, the mix of oak beam ceilings and slate floors gives a cosy, lived-in atmosphere, particularly at night with the log-burner in the inglenook fireplace roaring. Out the bedroom windows, there's a view of Cadair Idris, a mountain at the southern-most end of Snowdonia. This is rustic living at its most picturesque, a world away from the city, and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to rural pursuits. In the local area, there's everything from salmon fishing on the River Wnion to cycling the country roads to paying a visit to nearby Dolgellau for fresh produce from the farmers' market — just over an hour away on foot or eight minutes in the car. This pretty home can be found beside the River Wnion in the small market town of Dolgellau, right at the heart of Snowdonia. It’s a wonderful base for exploring the national park, but staying home is just as much of a treat here. You can enjoy riverside views from the garden, where you’ll have a barbecue. Inside, the mill conversion boasts a wood-burning stove and a games room that’s ideal for older children. Little ones will need to be supervised on the spiral staircase.

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.

This rural cottage puts Snowdonia National Park on your doorstep. Built with traditional Welsh stone, what first drew our attention here was the panoramic views of Cader Idris. The best spot to enjoy them is the garden's picnic table, but nearly every room boasts a scenic outlook. Even the living area offers a glimpse of the mountains – and with the wood burner crackling away, it's the definition of cosy. Most of all, though, we love the location. Only one mile from Dolgellau, you'll have easy access to The Mawddach Trail (perfect for cycling) and Barmouth Beach (9 miles away) – not to mention a bevvy of walking and hiking routes to suit all abilities.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane lies this comfortable and cosy barn conversion, just outside Dolgellau. This home is a great base to explore southern Snowdonia with plenty of walks and cycle trails not far away from your door. Plus, Abermaw beach at Barmouth is just nine miles away where you can bathe in the sun, wander the village or even have a go at paddleboarding. 

In the evening, we would love to fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal, accompanied by vistas of woodland and mountains. Then get cosy for a night snuggled up on the sofa, warming your feet on the underfloor heating.

Nestled in the lush, green Cywarch Valley, your only neighbours are the occasional flock of sheep. The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.

On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. You'll find this handsome stone cottage in a rural hamlet right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, just a thirty-minute drive from the base of the famous mountain. There's a lovely view of this hilly terrain from the home's private garden, which comes with a gas barbecue and plenty of seating for when the weather plays ball. Inside, there are both rustic and modern aspects. A log-burning fire sits in the corner of the living space, for example, but the kitchen has a Quooker tap for instant boiling water and the bathrooms would be right at home in any slick urban apartment. However, we all know that it's the great outdoors that's the big attraction in Wales and there are endless adventures to be had on your doorstep. If you're a keen birdwatcher, you'll love this home's location on the banks of Foryd Bay, a nature reserve in North Wales that sees huge numbers of different species migrate to the area for winter. The cottage is certainly geared up for just sitting back and marvelling at nature, with huge windows in the living room, as well as a roof terrace and a hot tub in the enclosed garden facing the water for when the weather's more agreeable. When the sun's gone down, you'll find this home the epitome of cosiness, especially with the fireplace crackling away and the whole party snuggled up on the comfy sofas surrounding.
