The first thing you'll notice pulling up at this farmhouse is the thirty-five acres of private grounds – stunning greenery wraps around you, making it a fantastic option for those who love bringing their pets along with them for idyllic countryside walks. Just outside the home, there's a peaceful garden, complete with flourishing plant beds and a picnic bench from which to enjoy the peace and quiet of the North Walian countryside. Indoors, the mix of oak beam ceilings and slate floors gives a cosy, lived-in atmosphere, particularly at night with the log-burner in the inglenook fireplace roaring. Out the bedroom windows, there's a view of Cadair Idris, a mountain at the southern-most end of Snowdonia. This is rustic living at its most picturesque, a world away from the city, and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to rural pursuits. In the local area, there's everything from salmon fishing on the River Wnion to cycling the country roads to paying a visit to nearby Dolgellau for fresh produce from the farmers' market — just over an hour away on foot or eight minutes in the car. Venturing further afield, Snowdon sits an hour's drive to the north if you fancy a more demanding challenge.

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane lies this comfortable and cosy barn conversion, just outside Dolgellau. This stone cottage in Snowdonia National Park will suit hiking, mountain biking and horse riding enthusiasts alike. Located on a working sheep farm with the homeowner’s bed and breakfast nearby, you wouldn’t know that the market town, Dolgellau is only a forty-minute walk away. Historically, it was known for the woollen and tanning industry. It is now known for having the oldest cricket club in Wales but, more prominently, Cadair Idris’ base camp. If you’re more of a beachgoer, take the great Mawddach trail down to the seaside town of Barmouth – less than a twenty-minute drive from home. You’re also a half-hour drive from the largest lake in Wales – Llyn Tegid. And after an explorative day full of adventure, return to your cosy cottage with heaps of bucolic charm. Stoke up the fire and settle down for a lovely evening under the wooden beamed ceilings. We especially love the farmhouse style doors and warm wooden furniture – you’d think you were in the farmhouse itself. For a blast of sea air, Abermaw Beach in Barmouth, less than a twenty-five-minute drive from home, has golden sands which are perfect for basking or swimming. And let’s not forget the thrill seekers – the popular peak of Cader Idris is under a half-hour drive away, as well as the largest mountain bike trail centre in the UK – Coed y Brenin. Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.

This pretty home can be found beside the River Wnion in the small market town of Dolgellau, right at the heart of Snowdonia. It’s a wonderful base for exploring the national park, but staying home is just as much of a treat here. You can enjoy riverside views from the garden, where you’ll have a barbecue. Inside, the mill conversion boasts a wood-burning stove and a games room that’s ideal for older children. Little ones will need to be supervised on the spiral staircase.

The best spot to enjoy them is the garden's picnic table, but nearly every room boasts a scenic outlook. Even the living area offers a glimpse of the mountains – and with the wood burner crackling away, it's the definition of cosy. Most of all, though, we love the location. Only one mile from Dolgellau, you'll have easy access to The Mawddach Trail (perfect for cycling) and Barmouth Beach (9 miles away) – not to mention a bevvy of walking and hiking routes to suit all abilities.

With gorgeous walking trails, a waterfall, nature reserve, mountains and lakes at your doorstep, there’s plenty to explore even if cycling is not for you.

Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end.
