Though with rural walks, national parks, lakes, castles, rivers, waterfalls, market towns and heritage railways nearby, we expect you’ll be spending most of your time in the great outdoors, exploring this adventurous region of North Wales. This cottage is the perfect antidote to activity-packed days, with its wooden beamed ceilings and bucolic charm. Head into the garden and the views over meadows and farmland will instantly calm your busy mind. Local pubs and shops are a five-minute drive away so although it might feel remote it’s not at all isolated. In fact, it's perfectly placed. Bala’s lake (Llyn Tegid) is ten minutes away by road, and at four miles long, it’s the largest freshwater lake in Wales – pack your swimmers (and a picnic) as this is an excellent spot for a dip. Other activities in and around Bala include fishing, kayaking and white water rafting. Footpaths and cycling routes also take you high into the lesser-visited Penllyn mountains within Snowdonia National Park.

When it’s time to get out and about, join the friendly locals for a swift pint in the traditional inns of Bala (an easy twenty-minute walk away). For something more adventurous, give watersports a try on Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales (a fifteen-minute walk). Just watch out for Teggie – Wales’ answer to the Loch Ness Monster. Or stay on dry land and give the lakeside steam train a whirl instead. 

Fancy spreading your wings a little further? The golden shores of Barmouth are an afternoon well spent (a forty-eight minute drive). And no visit to these mighty Welsh lands would be complete without a walk in the Snowdonia National park – it’s just a ten-minute drive from your door.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Meanwhile, the gorgeous Lake Bala and the nearby village of Bala are only ten minutes away by car.

At night, settle down by the fire pit and enjoy those clear, peaceful skies, before snuggling down inside onto the couch with a warming brew and if you can find it, a sweet slice of Bara birth – a traditional Welsh tea bread.

The crystal waters of Lake Bala are just moments away – a dream location for water sports enthusiasts – while its central Snowdonia location makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding National Park. Step inside and you’ll find this traditional building benefits from a combination of character features (namely vaulted ceilings and oak beams) and a modern interior, with an open-plan living and dining area, contemporary kitchen and bathroom, and plush bedrooms. Warm, neutral interiors complement the farmland views, which take centre stage here. The cottage has an enclosed garden with decking, outdoor furniture and views across the fields and rolling hills to the rear – not to mention the private hot tub. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were out somewhere in the sticks but in fact, the home is right on the edge of town. The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

There aren't many homes in our collection where you could feasibly arrive by kayak rather than by car, but this is one of them. Perched on the side of the Menai Strait, this four-storey gem dates back to the Victorian era and benefits from beautiful views of the sea, Bangor Pier and the Snowdonia mountain range. This can be enjoyed from the big bay windows or the comfort of the outdoor terrace. Better still, you can head down to the home's private shingle beach which also has a small cave to explore. Back inside the home, the interior is traditional, with portraits hanging on the walls and a large wooden dining table a regal centrepiece to gather the group around after the day's excursions. The town of Beaumaris with its castle, pier and beach take just six minutes to reach in the car, while you can get to Penrhyn Zip World in twenty minutes if you're looking for hi-octane thrills.

The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa.
