Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts on the deck to drink up the views of the Berwyn mountain. Then break up the morning with a soak in the bubbly hot tub, just because you can. And imagine this spot at dusk as the sun sets over Bala – that’s a memory right there.

On wintery days, hunker down inside where an Aga cooker keeps things toasty in the open-plan living space – those views of the mountains and lake will be right there with you. Or sneak away to the snug for a quiet read or cheeky afternoon loll. 

When it’s time to get out and about, join the friendly locals for a swift pint in the traditional inns of Bala (an easy twenty-minute walk away). Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Though with rural walks, national parks, lakes, castles, rivers, waterfalls, market towns and heritage railways nearby, we expect you’ll be spending most of your time in the great outdoors, exploring this adventurous region of North Wales. This cottage is the perfect antidote to activity-packed days, with its wooden beamed ceilings and bucolic charm. Head into the garden and the views over meadows and farmland will instantly calm your busy mind. Local pubs and shops are a five-minute drive away so although it might feel remote it’s not at all isolated. In fact, it's perfectly placed. Bala’s lake (Llyn Tegid) is ten minutes away by road, and at four miles long, it’s the largest freshwater lake in Wales – pack your swimmers (and a picnic) as this is an excellent spot for a dip. Other activities in and around Bala include fishing, kayaking and white water rafting. Footpaths and cycling routes also take you high into the lesser-visited Penllyn mountains within Snowdonia National Park.

Light the wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay or warm up with a brisk walk to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – you’ll get there in under an hour if you go at a decent pace. Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Hire a fishing rod or stroll around the water’s edge, stopping for a well-deserved cup of tea in the café along the way.

Swap the noise of daily humdrum with the soft sounds of a babbling brook and birdsong at this Welsh gem of a home, set high in the Mid Wales hillsides overlooking a river and woodlands fringing Cwmllinau village.

From way up here in this restful nook of the world, you could feel a million miles from anywhere – which is just how we like things. But if you fancy spreading your wings, you’re central to Snowdonia National Park and Cardigan Bay for inspiring days out, as well as the postcard-pretty market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau for all the Welsh charm you’re chasing. And even closer to home, the charming village of Cwmllinau (1.2 miles away) with its traditional inn for swift pints and a warm welcome.

Back home, the enormous beauty outside is taking centre stage – and don’t the homeowners know it. They recently installed bi-fold doors leading out onto an impressive elevated terrace to make the very best of its setting. It’s a stunning spot to sit back and admire the tranquil views and multitude of birds that visit the feeding stand. 

Indoors, the cottage’s old bones are beautifully restored to make this home sing with Welsh slate floors, exposed stonework, and oak beams. While a luxurious freestanding slipper bath and wood-burning fire (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) are the cherry on the top.

You'll find this cottage at the gateway to the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park. Set in a small rural hamlet, it has a large private garden and incredible panoramic views of the rolling Welsh hills and valleys. Aimed squarely at lovers of the great outdoors, it's a perfect base for exploring Snowdonia and hiking the famous mountains. Visit Lake Vyrnwy and Llyn Tegid for watersports or head to the nearby Dyfi Forest for some challenging mountain bike trails. 

On colder evenings, logs are provided for the cosy wood burner in the living room. On summer days there's a sunroom to relax in, as well as garden furniture and a barbecue outside. The home is in an International Dark Sky Reserve, so prepare to spend your nights gazing at some of the clearest starry skies Wales has to offer.

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself. 

Hand In Glove

Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

We may have found the most adorable home for two. This former milking parlour is one of a small group of cottages in the heart of the Anglesey countryside. Rural, secluded and perfectly in tune with nature, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down. Wander down secret paths in the extensive grounds then take a seat on the deck to watch the dragonflies hovering above the water. The fishing lake is well stocked and there can surely be few more idyllic places for casting a line. Inside the single-storey stone cottage, you’ll find pine furniture, pretty coordinating fabrics and a log burner to warm your toes by. With Anglesey’s dramatic coastline just a short drive away, big surf and blustery coastal walks are in plentiful supply. Stock up for supper in the bustling market town of Llangefni, before hunkering down for the night together.

Guests can explore over 20 miles of private paths winding through woods and farms across the estate or visit the world-famous Bodnant Garden owned by the National Trust. The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. There’s a pool table here too, which is boung to keep both the kids and grown-ups entertained for a few hours. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

Follow the coastal path which runs close to the house, for rambling walks through stunning scenery. Machroes Beach backs onto Abersoch golf course, where you can have a swing and a putt on their 18-hole course overlooking the ocean.
