Step inside, and this is the ultimate Welsh dream cottage – with exposed beams, chocolate-box windows, a made-for-action Aga cooker, and an inglenook fireplace at its heart. While upstairs, the serene bedrooms are pared back and unfussy, letting those pretty garden scenes and magnificent mountain panoramas seen through every bedroom window do all the talking. 

When it’s time to don your walking boots and get out exploring, you’re spoilt for choice here. Cadair Idris, the highest mountain in Southern Snowdonia, is on your doorstep – as is Castell y Bere, with its historical ruins strung along the foot of the mountains. Or, pack up a beach bag and head to the vast shores of Tywyn for a wander along its five miles of sandy beaches backed by a promenade and dunes. When tummies start to rumble, nip into the dinky seaside village of Aberdyfi (a twenty-minute drive) for lip-smacking fish and chip suppers, homemade ice cream and a paddle along its golden shores – it’s all as charming as it sounds.

Overlooking the Dyfi Estuary, this modern home can serve as an excellent base for nearby hiking and walking with acres of landscaped grounds surrounded by woodlands. Inside, there's a sleek island kitchen that's perfect for country weekends away, as well as a large enclosed deck patio to enjoy a barbecue in the great outdoors – plus a jaw-dropping view we can vouch for. The home's a bright and airy space with high ceilings and vaulted beams that we really love. But it's a homely spot too, with calm grey tones and soft furnishings that keep things cosy. Take a short drive to the seaside village of Aberdyfi, just three miles down the road, for a fun day of sea and surf, or perhaps wander around the beachside shops and restaurants in search of the finest local fish and chips. Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

Surrounded by peaceful countryside, this barn conversion is cosy, comfortable and a pleasure to return to after long hikes through the Snowdonia National Park. Overlooking patchwork rolling hills, the private patio is an ideal spot for morning coffees and evening glasses of wine. Try your hand at recreating classic Welsh dishes in the fully-equipped kitchen or jump in the car and take the short drive to Machynlleth for a bite to eat in one of the fantastic restaurants. Admire the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art before taking the twenty-five-minute car ride to Aberdyfi, a pretty seaside village where the River Dyfi meets the clear waters of Cardigan Bay.

As you approach this isolated farmhouse, follow the delicate bridge over the gently flowing river, and into your front courtyard. Inside the home, find chunky wooden beams and matching furnishings throughout. Machynlleth is a melting pot of people and interests, making it a unique place to visit. So, what better accommodation for a trip to this quirky town than a medieval house? This home will whisk you back in time with its wooden beams, stone fireplaces and antique curiosities. Luckily the kitchen has had a 21st-century update, but the grand hall is still an imposing place to feast with your family. Culture vultures can wander the streets of Machynlleth, popping into antique shops and local galleries before pausing for a refreshment in one of the cosy pubs. Meanwhile outdoorsy types will be just as content venturing into Snowdonia National Park, where they can explore valleys and peaks on foot or by bike. And the sea is not far away either – a short drive will bring you to the turquoise waters of Aberdyfi Beach.

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.

Hidden away among rolling farmland on the outskirts of Machynlleth, this converted eighteenth-century miner’s cottage helps get you closer to nature. A private garden offers plenty of play space for younger members of your party, while more active visitors will appreciate the many scenic walks in the surrounding area — many of which begin right at your front door. With Snowdonia National Park reachable in fifteen minutes' drive and the rugged coastline of Cardigan Bay taking about half an hour, this home presents itself as the ideal base from which to explore the varied attractions of Mid Wales. After a hard day of hiking or swimming in the sea, return to the oak-beamed living room and warm yourself in front of the inviting inglenook fireplace — complete with its original bread oven — before retiring to one of the three bedrooms, complete with extra blankets for those cooler nights.

You're stepping back in time when you step inside this cottage in the ancient market town of Machynlleth. Centuries old, it's built from local stone and sits on a quiet side street in the centre of town – an easy walk from its restaurants, shops and cosy pubs.

What it lacks in outside space, it more than makes up for in character, with slate floors, a mix of old and new beams and an antique sideboard in the entrance hall. The layout has been turned upside-down to make the most of the vast, vaulted room above, so you'll find the bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor here, and we particularly love the twin bedroom with its gigantic inglenook. 

Climbing the stairs, you come to the main living space – a sociable, open-plan room that takes up the whole top floor. Packed with beams, and with oak floors, it's a pretty special room, with a cosy seating area, dining table and modern kitchen. Not known for their large windows, this medieval gem has also had a skylight added to boost the natural light.

Set in a prime position surrounded by woodland just outside of charming Machynlleth, this converted stable building is the ideal location for small groups or family gatherings in the heart of rugged Snowdonia. This pet-friendly property features traditional farmhouse interiors, with high beamed ceilings, a woodburning stove and Welsh slate flooring (upgraded with underfloor heating to accommodate the unpredictable climate!) adding authentic touches of character. Slouchy sofas invite you to settle in with a great book, while a large farmhouse dining table is the ideal spot for a family gathering at the end of each day. The garden is surrounded by luscious, beautiful greenery, where you can spend lazy mornings tucking into a continental breakfast out in the fresh air, enjoying the comforting sounds of the chirping birds and the babbles of the stream. When you're energised after a hearty breakfast, the historic market town of Machynlleth is just a twelve-minute drive away. There are endless walking trails around here, or simply explore the town's art galleries, quaint shops, cafes, pubs, museums, and more. And if you want to take a walk along the coast, you're within easy reach of North Wales' blustering beaches.

The garden is also raised – you can even spot Cadair Idris, a favourite mountain peak for avid hikers, from the comfort of your own picnic table. If you aren’t planning to summit it yourself, you can simply enjoy the scenery with your own homemade barbecue or morning coffee. This unique home is made up of two slate quarryman's cottages and steeped in history, retaining original features such as the slate walls and large hearths. Just because you're staying in the country, it doesn't mean you have to go rustic. This impeccably designed home has all the trappings of a modern family home, but it's set in a centuries-old converted farm building. Taking full advantage of its stunning rural setting, it's all about sociable, open spaces, big windows and beautiful views. Perfectly placed to offer the best of the coast (it's just two miles to the beach) and Snowdonia, it's a great spot for exploring this beautiful area. 

Inside, you're greeted by crisp, contemporary design, bright white walls and wood floors – with cosy underfloor heating to the entrance level. There's a comfortable living room with a rather stylish log burner in the corner and picture windows, while a few steps down leads through to our favourite room in the house – a vast kitchen and dining space with A-frame beams and a dual aspect. Open it right up to the patio on either side for evening barbecues or summer breakfasts.

Elsewhere, each of the three bedrooms comes with an en-suite and we love the vaulted ceilings and far-reaching views across the fields and hills from the upstairs rooms.

And, hikers can lace up their boots to hike up rugged Cadair Idris, or join the Mawddach Trail for a more leisurely walk.

The owners, James and Sophie, live up at the main house and they've put a great deal of care into it. Heated with a ground source heat pump, laid out using the rules of Feng Shui and designed to be as cosy and welcoming as possible, this place will appeal to keen cyclists, walkers and those of us who just want to escape for a bit. Surrounded by pine forest, with a river running opposite, it's in the Dyfi Valley, with the Dyfi bike park just a ten-minute drive. A traditional slate building, the inside is modern and practical. Cosy up on the sofas in front of the fire (a basket of logs is provided), cook in the smart kitchen and eat at the contemporary dining table – it's all one sociable space. There's a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with two more upstairs with sloping ceilings and skylights. In the summer, step out onto your patio with a cup of coffee each morning and just listen to the birds. A short walk away there's a public park – perfect for dog walks – and you can stroll into town to the cafe and pub.

Right in the heart of Dolgellau, this home makes for an excellent base for exploring the nearby mountains, villages, forest and coastline. If you want to get out and see the Great Outdoors, this is a marvellous choice indeed. You can walk nine miles from your front door along an old railway line to reach Barmouth and its pretty beach, where you’ll tuck into fish and chips and breathe in the sea air. The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint. 

After a day spent outdoors, you couldn’t ask for a more warm or welcoming home to return to. Rest your weary feet in front of the log burner in the inglenook fireplace, or curl up in the reading nook with a book and a cuppa. The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection.

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions.
